FILM DESCRIPTION:
The film version of The Natural pulls off the neat trick of conveying the spirit of the Bernard Malamud novel upon which it is based, even while changing both the outcome and the meaning of Malamud's closing chapters. In his first film appearance in four years, Robert Redford plays Roy Hobbs, a farm boy with a hankering to be a great baseball player. With his faithful homemade bat "Wonderboy" in hand, Roy heads to the big city. En route, he arouses the fascination of the mysterious Harriet Bird (Barbara Hershey). Luring the boy to a hotel room, Harriet asks Roy what he wants out of life. Roy brashly responds he wants to be "the best there is," whereupon Harriet whips out a gun and shoots Roy down. Sixteen years later, a humbler Roy Hobbs emerges from the bush leagues to become a 35-year-old "rookie" on the 1939 lineup of the New York Knights. He soon becomes the team's star player, and in so doing once more attracts enigmatic woman Memo Paris (Kim Basinger), the glamorous niece of the Knights' manager Pop Fisher (Wilford Brimley) and the mistress of Rothstein-like gambler Gus Sands (a curiously unbilled Darren McGavin). Roy's fascination with Memo compromises his ability to play, but this time he finds salvation in the form the angelic Iris Gaines (Glenn Close), his childhood sweetheart. From this point forward, the script for The Natural bears very little resemblance to the Malamud original. Without giving anything away, it can be said that Roy Hobbs is given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to compensate for the mistakes of his youth, despite the demonic intrusion of inexplicably spiteful sports writer Max Mercy (Robert Duvall). The Natural elevates the art of slow-motion photography to new heights; while this technique would become precious and boring in later baseball films, it works beautifully here, as does the decision by director Barry Levinson and cinematographer Caleb Deschanel to convey the symbolism inherent in the story in purely visual rather than blatantly verbal terms. (If the characters told you that the story was a retelling of the Camelot legend in baseball terms, would you have watched?) Another plus is the pastoral theme music by Randy Newman, which has been well utilized on sports broadcasts and "human interest" TV documentaries ever since. The baseball scenes in The Natural were staged at War Memorial Stadium in Buffalo, New York.

One could do a two hour lecture on this scene alone.Along with your spot on insight I would add, personally to me, when Wonder Boy is broken and Roy says, "Pick me out a winner, Bobby" a stage is set; I don't think the Final Home Run could be hit until Wonder Boy is broken. Why? When Bobby gets the "Savoy Special", a bat he and Roy worked on together, a gap is bridged--- the purity of the Game ("God I love baseball") and the investment of faith all those boys put in Roy is fully realized. And Roy is made whole. I've stated this very poorly and my apologies for that. Also, as Roy rounds the bases; how long would it take to go into all the symbolism as he rounds the bags? The sparks, which are a cause for joyous celebration for the pure of heart, are raining down fire and brimstone on Gus and his dirty guild. The sparks reflected in Pop Fischers (Fisher?) eyes, his dream realized. You could do much better on this than I...take care!

The hope of good prevailing over evil...it’s not usually how reality works..only in the movies. It’s being rewarded for being a good person, not taken advantage of. It’s being an adult that still gets to do what they wanted to as a kid. It’s the music of the movie. It’s the sounds of baseball it captures...the cleats walking through the gravel, the sound of the crack of the wood bat hitting the ball and echoing, the umpire yelling out the calls, the slides into the bag etc. it was the guy you could get behind because his greatness wasn’t measured on “career totals”. He wasn’t great because he had 3000 hits or 500 home runs. He was great because after a huge setback both physically and psychologically, he never gave up on his dream. He carried that bat with him until he got there and although he only played about 3 quarters of a season, he accomplished more personally and for others than anyone in history did in their entire careers. He won the pennant, he saved the manager from the judge taking over the team, he reversed financial ruin for the organization, he inspired kids, he reconnected with the seemingly only pure woman in his Life, took on the role of being a Father after realizing that woman’s kid was his, and he literally accomplished most of these things with one swing of the bat. With that home run, the Knights win, the judge is defeated, he’s a hero to the kids, Pop keeps his team, and he has finally crossed the path of unfinished business from his youth to the greatness he’s about to endure as a man. The cracking of wonderboy was the end of his youth and the new bat was his “new life”. Wonderboy was the gifted kid with a dream of becoming the greatest baseball player..the Savoy Special was the man he would become next..the adult, the father, the man. He was done with his mistakes..he was done with the Harriet Birds and the Memos. He was done chasing book records. He realized his dream and knew now what true greatness was. That’s why he was able to capture it in about 100 games. Iris’s line of “The life we learn with and the life we live with after that” is the whole concept of the movie. Those two bats represent Roy’s two lives. The best part of it all is he did it with honor and dignity. He was tempted by the evils of the game..Max looking for Him to sell out for a story, Gus looking for him to become the next corrupt player like Bump, the judge bribing him at the end...he stared down the barrel of evil and said “no”. It was all about realizing the dream he had as a kid. No kid dreams about how much money they can make by blowing a game or getting paid to produce a story..they dream about hitting the big home run, winning the big game. Best part was his response to the judge. “I thought I could rely on your honor, Hobbs.” “You’re about to” Oh MAN I Loved this movie. Forgive My rant, guys Lol. When things are bad, this is what I watch. I never could throw 100mph or hit a ball 400ft let alone 500, but this movie makes Me feel the purity of being a kid again.

For those who aren’t aware the way wonder boy broke is the typical way a corked bat breaks. The cut down the middle after being glued back together comes undone if you pause it at the right time you can see it might have been so it could break easier.

Yes. I heard that the film was "pitched" as a baseball version of a King Arthur story. Not sure everyone gets all the Arthurian references (the Knights for instance) but I too appreciated this one in particular. And I didn't mind that unlike some of those stories this one has a happy ending.

Oops...a bit of scene integrity issue...if you look at 00:37 he has swung and hit the ball and is holding the bat at the end of the swing (up over the right shoulder in the finish position) and the bat is fully intact....then later they show it split in two laying long the first base line...Oops indeed.

Staying Sober i’ve actually had this happen a few times. Sometimes the bat cracks and doesn’t break until the next time it hits something. I cracked my bat once and went to go back in the box. Went to tap it on the plate and get into my stance but when i tapped it half the barrel just fell right off the bat onto the ground

Classic Ted Williams story, love it. But no, there were two real life MLB players that Hobbs is possibly based on, Eddie Waitkus and Billy Jurges. Both were shot by women they were involved with and attempted late career comebacks. I recommend the novel, it's a great read.

Bobby Savoy is a 13 year old kid who loves baseball... he is in awe of Roy Hobbs... who treats him with genuine kindness and respect... plus he spent time helping him make "The Savoy Special"... The bat boy's name was Bobby Savoy. The pitcher in the end was John Rhodes, a Nebraska farm boy with a blazing fast ball. In the book, he was also the boy who Roy tossed the ball to after striking out The Whammer.I always thought Rhodes was a younger version of Hobbs.

At that time Hbobes was about to leave Station with train after good pitching against the Whammer and Hobbes gave his signball to a boy. A boy given the ball has grown and become the last rival in this scene. As a Bobby myself, this scene really tugged at my heart....bat boy for a perennial loser.....the "hero" helps him make the bat, he names it the Savoy (His last name) Special...when the "magic" bat broke...his hero told him to "pick him out a winner, and he gives him his own bat....then hobbs hits the game winning walk off home run, winning the pennant...I thought to myself when I first saw that scene...."that boy will never forget that moment if he lives to be 100.
