I'm torn about this. I completely agree with the criticism of the advertising industry (and our culpability in wanting to buy into it) it is completely untrue that GMO free or organic (which doesn't even really mean anything) are healthier than their counterparts. Indeed, in both cases there is extremely strong evidence that they are worse - nutritionally, environmentally, or by whatever metric you want to use. "Organic" is just as big a lie as "natural".
@FormerLeashKidAndProud10 жыл бұрын
Or if not a lie then seriously naive. We have two options for keeping our foods pest resistant, and that's through GMO or pesticides. We KNOW pesticides are bad for us and the environment. We're SCARED that GMO changes our food. And using neither will make our food unaffordable and will certainly set back global food production. Just because they use DNA from bacteria to modify corn doesn't mean that the bacteria is in any way shape or form involved in the corn. So going "EW BACTERIA?!" is such an ignorant position to have.
@aaronmcgee10 жыл бұрын
Spraying the environment with chemicals (which happens with GMO crops more than any other) is not good for the animals and plants that inhabit our Earth.
@ThePezter10 жыл бұрын
Actually,John Pass , GMO crops use significantly less chemical spraying (along, often, with less water nd other resources) than traditional crops. The idea of an organic utopia with small scale farmers providing all our needs is unrealistic and, frankly, dangerous, for most of humanity. The important concept is sustainability, and that is not sustainable.
@aaronmcgee10 жыл бұрын
Paul Perry Paul, I wish it was true. The idea behind GM crops is that they are modified to withstand spaying of herbicides and pesticides (take Round-up Ready corn and soy which are sprayed with Roundup before and during growth). Sprayed twice instead of the old way (once; beforehand only). New super-weeds are developing from this over-spraying and creating a need for even more and stronger pesticides to be used on GM crops than before.
@FormerLeashKidAndProud10 жыл бұрын
John Pass That wasn't the argument either of us were trying to make. Right now there is little demand for chemical free GMO crops, so there's economic incentive to GMO and spray and have a catch all 'organic' alternative. GMO is a broad definition, and while right now MANY crops are being modified to withstand pesticides instead of pests themselves there is still potential to use that research to make pesticides redundant if we demand the research to go that way. Companies are extremely sensitive to consumer tastes, after all. That was the point to this video.

As a consumer, I learn through practical experience, not so much listening to the 'hype' from either side of the fence. The real truth for me comes from what my body is telling me about what I am ingesting... and the payback is: I get to live a healthy life, where doctor visits and down-time from illness are rare. I eat 'organic' when I can, because I like the principals, the people and the ethic behind it. It also tastes way better than the mass-produced stuff. But - hey - I had breakfast at MacDonald's, followed by coffee at Starbucks. Maybe I'll balance with with brown rice & salad for dinner. It's all good. It's the Happy Palate that contributes more to my health than being petty about "my way being the right way". My way works for me, period. And I hope I'm always open to improving that.

One thing I love about this add is that it's saying "don't be fooled by the way they use the word 'natural' because 'natural' doesn't mean 'natural'" Yet they're using the word "organic" in a way that doesn't mean "organic" This is straight from dictionary.com 1. noting or pertaining to a class of chemical compounds that formerly comprised only those existing in or derived from plants or animals, but that now includes all other compounds of carbon. 2. characteristic of, pertaining to, or derived from living organisms: organic remains found in rocks. 3. of or pertaining to an organ or the organs of an animal, plant, or fungus. 4. of, pertaining to, or affecting living tissue: organic pathology. 5. Psychology . caused by neurochemical, neuroendocrinologic, structural, or other physical impairment or change: organic disorder. Compare functional ( def 5 ) . By the ACTUAL definition of 'organic' ALL FOOD is organic no matter how many pesticides you use in it. Honestly if you want a word to represent a type of product don't use a word that already means something completely different.

"Organic" is defined as 'at least 5 generations of non-genetic separation from a given plant". Meaning, the most 'abhorrently modified', 'crime against nature, affront to the natural order' abomination you can think of (lime crossed with a scorpion?) is just 5 generations away from being legally "organic" and for some fast producing plants (genetically modifying production rates doesn't nullify the 5 generation rule) that can be as short a 2 months. In other words, there is almost no way to avoid the nefarious, avarice driven, power hungry conglomerates from getting their depotentiating chemicals in your blood stream. Monsanto doesnt want free thinkers, the fluoride stultify creative abstraction and the rest of it precludes higher cognition. So we do the best we can, natural veganism is your best bet (as so many Olympians are realizing) but even that isnt a guarantee. Goodluck people, lets just hope the foundation of their own myopia crumbles before were all enslaved.

Because GMO foods register as foreign to the body. That means it is an antigen. It is no different than any other foreign substance - hexane, herbicides, pesticides, bisphenol, and the list goes on. Every time you consume GMO foods, you cause the body to produce antibodies and your immune system gets cranked up to combat this. Part of this process is the inflammatory process. As we know, this process leads to all kinds of disease, predominantly auto-immune diseases. Since so many foods are GMO, our bodies are in a constant state of imbalance. When the imbalance is persistent, and the body can no longer adapt, it then begins undergoing pathological changes to the anatomical structures which result in certain maladies as it fits the constitution of the individual. If you do the research, you will find that there is plenty of evidence to show that GM Foods wreak havoc on the individual and farm lands.

Wonderfully witty and beautifully sarcastic. Thank You! Only 3 points to make. 1. Bacillus thuringiensis is a commonly used organic pesticide that has been used for decades. The bacteria expresses multiple Cry toxins, each specific for a different family of herbivorous insects and none of these toxins harm humans. Rather than cover your fields in bacterial solution -> by expressing only a single, Bt gene (e.g: specific Cry toxin against Coleoptera) in corn or maise farmer's can protect their crops from herbivorous insects. Furthermore they do not need to spray expensive and broadly non-specific pesticides. 2. The insertion of drought resistance genes into crops for use in developing countries saves decades worth of time otherwise spent using traditional plant husbandry techniques. Its specific, saves times and potentially lives. 3. Can't speak for how corporations choose to act with this technology but the science makes a lot of sense.
@P0P3410 жыл бұрын
In response to posts regarding herbivorous insect resistance.. Nature can adapt. An individual’s HIV infection may develop resistance to a particular reverse transcriptase inhibitor. Similarly, a herbivorous insect may develop a resistance to a Cry-toxin. This is not a cause for surprise or despair. Just because a cancer develops resistance to a chemotherapy agent, you don’t just give up and abandon treatment. Resistance, drives innovation. Identify the mechanism of resistance. Alter the binding site or see if a different Cry-toxin will work. If not, try a different solution like expressing Lectins rather than a Bt-gene. Whatever you use to overcome resistance the emphasis should always be on preserving target specificity/selectivity and preventing any harm to the non-target organisms. In theory, if the expressed gene works there should be no need to spray fields with a board, non-specific pesticide as the plant protects itself.

We clearly need proper labeling legislation (On an international level), this much is unarguably- Each person should have the right to choose what they put their body, and knowing is obviously the first step towards this. But I do think we get alarmist about gm foods- with proper* testing, they can provide methods of improving food production/land-usage, reducing waste, and provide additional nutritional value above that the wild fruit/seed/etc would have provided. These effects *could* have additional add on effects- for instance making a healthy diet more affordable, reducing environmental damage from farming, and reducing co2 emissions from food transportation and processing. Ultimately, while we need to be careful to regulate this new technology carefully, and the need for clear and truthful labeling is unarguable, I feel too many people get caught up on the "it's not natural" thing, which the the end will do us all a disservice. Please note, it's gm foods in particular I'm chatting about. pesticides and growth hormones are a whole other kettle of fish. dead fish. and chemicals. *Proper scientific testing by non-industry, non-governmental organisations. Easier said than done, but... :P

Self-sufficiency is the best way for those that can afford it. For those that can't don't trust the label and shop at Farmers Markets instead. Stop giving your money to corporations to feed you and support your local mom and pop stores instead. Yes we do have population crisis but that does not justify corporate crime regardless. If it's not for our greater good don't put it out there in the first place. And for the love of god don't buy the crap. Corporations are already doing a great job at exterminating us in more than one way than just through food. If people can't stand up to protest and be up in arms about things like this then people ought to find a sensible way to avoid this problem completely; and NOT by the means of contribution to perpetuate status quo but by being awake and putting their money's worth where it should go. These criminals are out there because we pay them a top dollar to be there and they're not going anywhere for as long as we continue to live in ignorance and feed their greed. It's as simple as that. This can be a different world but it has to begin with us first. If we don't stand up for ourselves why should anyone give a damn about us anyway? To them we're lowest of the low. Majority are still sleeping or arguing to make a point that isn't for the benefit of all. This world is not run by righteousness and you won't see much of it if any around for a long time. This world could not be any more corrupt than it is.

It's appealing to popular purity myth anyway. The principles of organic, grass-fed, free-range, and such are mainly based on arbitrary standards that are restrictive without offering any measurable benefits, often at the detriment of sustainability. That's not to say that the resulting product isn't, in practice, often superior, but the health and sustainability of something organic has nothing to do with whether its pesticides are synthetic or "natural," and as often as not the standards don't actually provide guidelines that ensure a quality product, and often they come with their own pernicious drawbacks. Grass-fed, for example, means the livestock has literally been fed nothing but grass (and milk of course), which is trivially distinct from livestock that has been fed mostly grass with limited grains. That standard guarantees that the very valuable label is prohibitively expensive (it's hard to graze cattle when you need to slaughter them), and cattle producers are less incentivized to reach a middle ground, seeing that consumers will never know the difference; the dogma of the standard sacrifices the systemic quality and sustainability of beef in service of the purity of the ideal. The organic standards themselves are built on dubious ideas of purity that are unreasonably restrictive against most producers, and while overall they provide a framework for relatively sustainable small-scale farming, they draw arbitrary boundaries between "natural" and synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, instead of defining meaningful chemical standards. The entire standard, however well-intentioned, is predicated on, and ultimately a slave to, the myth of purity.
@sockfish12310 жыл бұрын
Yesyesyes. If only this could be the reply to every comment here.
@syzygy610 жыл бұрын
Jon Care Exactly, beef producers are inclined to produce extremely low-cost and low-quality beef when there isn't an incentive to reach a healthy middle ground. While small-scale farmers can foster a healthy personal relationship with their customers by producing quality product, even without necessarily meeting the strict organic or grass-fed standards, industrial-scale farms have almost no incentive to raise production costs, because it only directly interfaces with packagers and inspection agencies. For example, if you want to buy kosher food at the supermarket, you only need to look for food that bears the mark of a hechsher, such as OK or OU. I am definitely saying that the entire concept of organic food is somewhat pernicious because it's not actually about sustainability and health so much as arbitrary ideals of "natural" purity. But more importantly, I'm also saying that its steep requirements works against producers who would be happy to meet in the middle, if only there was a meaningful incentive. The current standards systemically harm the overall quality of food by demanding all-or-nothing commitment. If there were an evidence-based standard that rewards farmers for balancing health, sustainability, and efficiency, and allowed mediocre-quality product to stand above low-quality product while still incentivizing improvement, that would be miles more useful than a label for following the organic belief diet.

In much the same way, Australia's largest grocery retailer, Wooworths, whose slogan is "the Fresh Food People", has managed to legally redefine the word "Fresh' to mean anything that is not processed. So now they can sell apples that have been stored in a warehouse for up to 12 mths or more as 'fresh' produce. And that isn't going into the ubiquitous reports of mouldy and rotting fruit and veg in their 'Fresh' food section.....
@DcSensai10 жыл бұрын
thought if its not as processed, doesn't travel as far, doesnt have as many chemical additives/fertiliziers and if those that grow it truly wanted "everyone to eat healthier" why does it cost at least five times as much as those that travel half a world or more, and had more chemicals in the making of it and is far more processed?

Natural and Organic is not the same at all. A lot of people seem to not be catching that bit. For example, Cheerios are all natural; they also have to be registered as a pesticide because they've been crossbred with RoundUp. Meanwhile, a box of organic cereal is just what it says it is. Ingredients were not grown with toxic pesticides and cannot be genetically altered. Also, notice you never see "natural flavors" in the ingredients of an organic product.

One major problem with inventing new organisms by taking bits and pieces of many and splicing them together in a lab (GMO's) is that you create new species of "super weeds" (which is already happening). These are plants that need even MORE and stronger pesticides than before. Plus these new GMO species can act as weeds in our environment... like kudzu or garlic mustard and kill native plants (as already observed with GMO corn in Mexico.)

The sad thing is that organic doesn't always mean organic either!! Organic foods can be labeled as such if the farmer signs an affidavit that states they did not spray their crops. No crops are actually tested and 'certified' as being pesticide free in order to get the organic label. What's worse, is that crops WITH pesticides are not disqualified if it was from a neighbouring farm spraying their crops and the organic ones absorbed it inadvertently. As long as you didn't intend to spray your own crops (or you secretly spray at night time as I've heard is most often done from industry insiders), you can label your product as organic and reap the increased profits from your retail premium. The organic industry is built on a conflict of interest and this marketing is slightly hypocritical. I don't care what the farmer says, organic food should be sampled and tested in order to be called organic. Pesticide residue should disqualify certification: www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/pesticide-residue-found-on-nearly-half-of-organic-produce-1.2487712

Let me make deciphering food branding easier for those who don't know yet. There's only one place on any packaging where the brand legally cannot lie -THE BAR CODE. For a product to be truly organic meaning it has not been altered, processed, nothing added or changed (in the US, I can't confirm internationally) the bar code MUST start with a five digit number followed by a space and the very first number you see MUST be the number NINE (not 4, not 8..NINE is the magic organic number). Also, I must point out that the description of this video is misleading. Sure a USDA Organic Seal means it's organic but to attain that seal is a very tedious and super expensive process which is why some organic producers don't bother or simply can't afford to get the seal. So it's not fair to say that ONLY those with the seal are organic but it is fair to say that the bar code does not, cannot lie. Had to share, goodnight.

Bravo! Well-done. Funny and educational. Great choice of actor, too.

I am guilty of seeing a label with a cute little barn, green packaging, maybe a few farm animals, and the word "natural" on it and thinking, "Yeah, this seems like the healthy option!" - all while blissfully ignoring the list of ingredients and reality.

Organic is also legally vacuous.

It was funny until the end. 90% of this video applies to the word "organic" too.

All natural and 100% natural mean next to nothing at all? Well, that's a bit of an eye opener ... when it comes to food, organic is the only way to go ...
@13ccasto10 жыл бұрын
This was hilarious but the main problem I have with the organic certification is that it costs thousands of dollars, money that a small-scale farmer often doesn't have, which makes them resort to using words like "natural" and others to distinguish their product. I'd love to see a less costly alternative to certified organic!

"Organic" is a loose term too. Farmers will plant non organic food up hill and "organic" food down hill so that when it rains pesticides and other chemicals still treat the "organic" plant.

Want to elaborate? Products have to meet pretty strict requirements to be labelled organic. Not to mention its actually sustainable when done properly.
@soren35693 жыл бұрын
@@airbornepizza Can't speak for Haran Yakir, but I can answer for myself. "Organic" does include some good stuff, but it also includes a lot of anti-science BS. Most notably, the whole terror of GMOs. Fact is, GM is largely a matter of speeding up the normal hybridization process with less error. And it stands a good chance of being the only thing that keeps our food production ahead of our population curve. This doesn't mean that GM can't be used maliciously--capitalism in general is great for turning a largely neutral process and making it a force of harm and oppression--Monsanto is a good example of this. But even then, the issue is the other half of the coin (the presence of RoundUp in so much of our food supply, and the way Monsanto distorts agri-markets around the world), not in making food-plants that can withstand RoundUp. And of course, there's the scary use of the word "chemicals". Here's a list of chemical compounds; before you get to the end of it, see if you can guess which food I'm describing: Ethanol Propyl Acetate 2-Methylpropyl acetate Propanol n-Butyl acetate 2-Methylpropanol 2-Methylbutyl acetate n-Butyl propanoate n-Butanol n-Pentyl acetate 2-Methylbut-3-enyl acetate 2-Methylbutanol 3-Methylbut-3-enyl acetate 3-Methylbutanol 3-Methylbut-2-enyl acetate n-Pentanol n-Hexyl acetate E-Hex-3-enyl acetate Z-Hex-3-enyl acetate Hex-4-enyl acetate E-Hex-2-enyl acetate n-Hexanol Z-Hex-3-enol E-Hex-2-enol n-Hexyl-2-methylbutanoate n-Heptanol Camphor n-Octanol n-Oct-2-enol 1-Methoxy-4-(2 propenyl)-benzene ********** Okay, that's the list. What food is it? An apple.

@@soren3569 right but that doesn't mean that it isn't better to grow something in a better way, for example look up korean natural farming and compare that to monocultures and their issue. Yes the organic sticker does not guarantee either one.

The FDA can help companies get away with things that both please us and anger us. Some helpful things wouldn't be possible without approval in "gray area's" while other companies exploit things like saying "0 GRAMS OF TRANS FAT! *per serving" when "partially-hydrogenated oil" is in the list of ingredients.

@squarecomm466210 жыл бұрын
Food that is 100 percent organic may carry the new "USDA organic" label and say "100% organic." Food that is at least 95 percent organic may carry the new seal. Food that is at least 70 percent organic will list the organic ingredients on the front of the package. If a product is less than 70 percent organic, the organic ingredients may be listed on the side of the package but cannot say "organic" on the front.

I don't get this "No genetically modified organisms" that's a false statement, as all staple foods (wheat, potatoes, grain, fruits & vegetables (some of them have poisonous origins)) are all genetically modified, farmers have been improving food production by crossing plant species together (genetic modification right here) to improve pest resistance, disease prevention, quality and growth rate etc. it's the same with farm animals they've all been cross bred for the purpose of increasing meat production per cow
@kayzanakzn10 жыл бұрын
The fundamental difference between traditional and genetically modified plant breeding is, in genetically modified plant breeding, genetic material from one species of plant, bacteria, virus, animal or fish is literally inserted into another species, with which they could never naturally breed.
@chewy77snipedyou10 жыл бұрын
bacteria & viruses can get into plants & animals quite easily and integrate themselves, take genetic material from the host and infect another species so your point is invalid. We use dead bacteria & "dead" viruses (viruses aren't really alive) for vaccination (there's a process to make it safe of course and reduce the probability for infection to like 0.000001%). The real reason why most people are worried about gm food is that pesticide & fertilizer companies would effectively go out of business if we made "super" crops, so they decided to campaign against it and they did it well
@aaronmcgee10 жыл бұрын
Srishunbagasundaran Pesticide usage goes up in the long run with GMO crops. This has been proven already with GMO corn. More pesticides and stronger ones to kill the super weeds that they are creating. Not to mention that the GMO biotech companies are often the same as the pesticide companies... so your point is invalid.
@chewy77snipedyou10 жыл бұрын
yeah my second point is wrong, could have sworn it was a pesticide group that didn't want gm development advancing ah well. It was inevitable for pests to develop resistance against the anti-pest mechanisms in the plants, that's the way life is, prey develops protection, predator develops a way to over come the protection. as i said in another post it should be a balancing act where the gm and natural methods should be used together. I reckon we should gm crops so they're higher quality and use natural methods such as the predators of the pest as the pesticide

Is there really a problem with eating GMOs or Pesticides? i've probably been eating them my entire life, I don't really have any intention on stopping that. yeah sure, maybe it's wrong for companies to lie about products being "natural". But my point is, maybe we need another campaign saying that you should know what you're eating. but even though we put a lot of crap in their with your food, it may not actually effect you in any way.
@Dee_Just_Dee10 жыл бұрын
No, there isn't. While there hasn't been a whole heck of a lot of research done into the safety of GMOs, there's no reason to believe they're dangerous either. There isn't something spooky or nasty about genetic engineering that could somehow magically make us sick.
@aaronotto664010 жыл бұрын
I don't want my body to be a corporate for profit testing ground. Big biotech firms have very sketchy track records, but then again what would you expect from organizations who want to patent the world’s food supply? These massive biotech companies have a history of toxic contamination, deceiving the public and suing small farmers when their patented seeds blew across the fence. Biotech firms sell sterile seeds to African farmers- meaning the seeds are only good for one season, because the plants that grow up will not be able to reproduce. Farmers must buy new seeds every year instead of growing from the previous year’s yield. GMOs are not the farmers’ friend.
