Forcing myself to write/ create not only helped me pull myself out of my depression by giving me a sense of purpose in an otherwise meaningless existence. It also was paramount in my search for myself. Publicly sharing creative works will awaken a lot of emotions or what others refer to as “resistance”. The desire to fit in or rather the perceived need to belong to the herd/ tribe is a strong form of resistance. It is why so many people choose to create not from a place of authenticity but from a place pleasing others. Our insecurities are our resistance to creativity. We fear being judged, ostracized, and banished from the tribe. Yet, all our creative potential and date I say, greatness is in our ability to create for the sake or need to express ourselves authentically. I decided after many years of inner conflict. The safe path of acceptance vs the authentic path possible rejection or humiliation, to written a book not for the reasons most do. Not for money, fame, recognition, etc, but purely for I have something to say. To truly create for the sake of creation itself is the epitome of our uniqueness and individuality. It is also our connection to divinity. In other words, creativity is essential to self-awareness. Most people aren’t “creative” because they are afraid of being themselves in an artificial world. Society rewards the conformist and punishes the honest creator. Yet, the honest creator is savior of mankind.

Genesis 1:26-27 We are made in Gods image, the creator. It’s no wonder we grapple with being humans meant to create and build. We co-create life, opportunities, build infrastructure, and relationships and express ourselves through art, literature the list goes on. We are able to find out on earth what it means to work hard at creating something and trying to have others understand the value you put into it based off the work and dedication and connection you have to it. Loving the video and really appreciate this comment for being a catalyst to a brainstorm session I didn’t know I would have today. Another super power we have- encouragement☺️

This is exactly what I experience as a composer, sometimes writing in my sleep and receiving the bulk of ideas while resting, driving, showering... Much can be accomplished with attention and hard work, but it’s perhaps more important to wait for the inspiration to find me. I always have multiple compositions on back burners and move from one to another. This allows me to maintain active focus while other projects are marinating. I’m a long time subscriber and love your videos. Cheers!

The idea of allowing the unconscious mind to work on a puzzle certainly resonates with me. My favorite example was the time I explored five different strategies to reach the same goal. I worked until the wee hours of the morning. When I realized that I needed to get some sleep before going to my day job, I slept. Within minutes after I awoke, a solution that had not even vaguely occurred to me before sleep sprang full blown into my head.

As a creative writing major, I found the external pressure to produce invaluable. It's never comes from inspiration, but once you get going, it comes. When you look at the great ones, for the most part, they had to produce to make a living--Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart come immediately to mind. Shakespeare's another. Few if any do only out of an inner urge. They marshalled their skills for a larger purpose. And they practiced their craft continuously.

This video is beautifully put together, and incredibly validating. I remember being “rebelliously” against the idea that one could understand the artistic process, much less discipline it, when I was young and in early stages of development in being a writer. In the years since, especially more recently, I’ve become obsessed with the craft of it, like honestly obsessive over learning as much as I can about it from all angles, in order to continue to grow. Out of this, I’ve become so much more disciplined in it. I used to think to myself that if one day I became a successful enough author that I could write full time, then I’d give myself more time to write, more discipline. Recently, instead of waiting, I decided to do that anyway, to write that way anyway, and it’s changed my entire writing process and it’s such a fulfilling, exciting, sometimes maddening feeling. It’s this constant climb. But that’s also what makes it what it is, and as hard as it can be some days, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Well done, articulate and so very accurate! WOW I sure am familiar with the initial rush and euphoria that comes with a creative idea quickly morphing into self-doubt and questioning of abilities you mention in the beginning..it's like receiving a gift box from a trusted friend that you already have an idea contains a beautiful, expensive item you've always wanted inside, and then handing it back to them like you can't be bothered to even open the box. We all do it at one time or another, don't we? Sometimes over and over as the universe feeds us fantastic ideas and we refuse them. Steven Pressfield was the first to really put the concept of resistance into perspective for me and help me realize the ONLY weapon against it is to create!

Excellent articles on creativity. Possessing knowledge is one thing and converting it into an outstanding work is another. There exist an unknown factor in between. Who ever you are who reads this. Just know that what ever project you want to do. It`s highly important that you do it!. It don`t matter if you make it to the end or not. The important is to focus on you " doing you", and to learn on the way. Stopp " researching" for the perfect strategy, or waiting for the perfect timeing. Start now!. And may " done is better than perfect" be your new mantra. The world needs people who dare to try. And if you fail. Learn from it, and try again. The work don`t need to be 100% creativ. Even if it`s just you starting a business doing mondane tasks, it`s important that you do it!. Strenght and Honour!

I am dealing with anxiety... not in my face, but as a constant background din. Alcohol is my medication of choice for when I want to practice music, and make it pop with the vigor I am chasing. I'm a retired elder... and I wish I didn't have to drink to get to this space, but I do. It has helped me see why so many famous artists have died from drug/alcohol use... Given the pressures that are on. Those who became stars, with agents and other business personnel, pressuring them to work, make money, the escape to drugs provides them the means to get back onto that child-like creative state. Think of all the famous musicians who OD'd. Most were at the nadir of their careers, some, due to use, were fading from their glory because of drugs/alcohol use/abuse. The agents had dollar signs in their eyes, not thinking of the human part of what was making them money.... I think that if only these agents sent the artists away from the business, away from partners, romantic and working, and set them free to go and do anything but their art, disappear, unwind, no schedules, to come back when they felt like it. Yet, here I am, sitting in my home in the woods, nervous about all of life that hits me via social media... and I don't indulge in it that much, but I do. I so want to launch this smartphone, get back to a world without any screens... but without it, I've no work as an artist. I need a drink.
