I am from Turkey and I think the story is like this, he is from Uzbekistan he is a talented basketball player but the sports infrastructure is not good in Uzbekistan so he comes to Turkey, becomes Turkish to play on Turkish national team which is definetely better than Uzbekistan national team. Only thing suspicious is his age cause I thought he was older as well. Becoming Turkish to play on a national sports team occurs rather often in Turkey, especially from neighbour countries or even US. A player previously named Bobby Dixon is the star of the Turkish national basketball team.

As someone who is actually interested in Turkish basketball I know that his parents are from Uzbekistan, there is no denying this. His Turkish is not very fluent, for me to hear him speak Turkish is probably the same as for an American to hear him speak English. problem is that it's not a secret he's originally from uzbekistan. everyone in turkey knows this simply because his surname is not turkey turkish. also any player in any sports can play for any national team regardless of his/her nationality as long as the person did not play for a different national team before. as far as the name change goes that's what people do when they become turkish citizens. off the top of my head brazilian football player marco aurelio became a turkish citizen, changed his name to mehmet aurelio and played for the turkish national football team. there are hundreds of examples for this in every sport. so this is all normal. the only thing i'm unsure of is his age but i'm pretty sure nba teams would do medical tests in order to determine player's ages especially if there's some suspicion involved.

"Ova" means plain in Turkish. There are lots of places in Turkey ending with "-ova" (Çukurova, Yüksekova, Korukova, Çayırova, Artova). plus place names usually used as surnames in Turkey (u can easily check this fact with a quick facebook search). Maybe İlyasova has Uzbek origin but his name can not be an evidence of true identiy of him.

That is actually true. Ive played basketball against him at younger age groups in the past. He was playing for ulker at that time. the real story is he is crimean tatar origin. his family are crimean tatar turks. during stalin era of soviet union they forcefully deployed to uzbekistan. scout from ulkerspor reach the guy and organize a turkish passport for him. in turkish passport he is from eskisehir city in turkey. this city mostly inhabited by crimean tatar origin people. so this is that simple. not an illuminati shit:)

We didn’t have any Islamic movements in Uzbekistan. There was an attempt as a terroristic act but nothing more, the situation has always been stable, fortunately! So the only reason that made Arsen leave our county was the opportunity to show up cause it’s pretty easier to represent yourself from Turkey rather than Uzbekistan. So...unfortunately it happened in that way but we’re glad that our land could give a basketball world a pure talent!

I played professional basketball in ages of 7 to 16 in Turkey. It is pretty common for big clubs at the time like Ülker or Efes Pilsen to recruit young guys from the Balkans and the Caucasus. We had to play against these giant non Turkish guys who were at least 2-3 years older than us and it was very obvious. So this lowering age thing in youth clubs is more than common in Turkey.

AndyHoopes, you are right about the last name ending: ova, eva - is for female and this is actually coming from the former Soviet Union times. But what is also interesting is that in Soviet Union, coaches together with management team did falsify the ages of the young sportsmen. It’s really sad, but it’s true. I know a lot of people who’s ages are decreased in their documents only for these purposes.

As a 1983 born Turkish, I remember his first years in Turkish club Ulkerspor (Today's Fenerbahce) as the Uzbek wonderkid. Everybody knows Turkish basketball clubs have good scouts in the Balkans and Central Asia as Cedi Osman is one of the best picks from FYROM. It is also known that in all sports a player can only be accepted to the Turkish National team if he/she never played for 1st National Team of another country. According to these, the probability of the Uzbek authorities having chosen him to their national team before he came to Turkey is very likely. And Turkish authorities use this kind of games very often. I also know that Turkey tried to add Zaza Pachulia to national squad back his days in Ulkerspor also.

I mean he totally looks like an Uzbek, they're one of the Turkic countries, though. But in Turkey, it's not rare that guys from other Turkic countries play for the national team, or even from Eastern-Europe, such as Mirsad Türkcan or even Hidayet Türkoğlu. When you apply for a Turkish citizenship, you have to adopt a Turkish name, that is obviously the reason for changing the name from Arsen to Ersan, which are pretty similar actually. And for the surname, if a Turkish guy with a Turkish surname applied to register him, they might have fooled the authorities by telling them it was his mother's surname. Hence the Ilyasov-a. Or maybe even tried to make it sound like Turkish by adding the "a" at the end because "Ova" means "lowland" in Turkish and "Ilyas" is a common Turkish name. Such an interesting case, though.

actually this is a common practice for countries who import players for their national teams. they bring the player, make him/her citizen and change some information(birth of date, name, origin) in the process so they can be eligible to play for those national teams. the problem is the title: FAKED with big letters. it is not Ersan who FAKED his identity, it is officers and guys from government who FAKED Ersan's identity. and also to mention, those random guys you claim are not random, they are low profile government sports officers usually.

I know that people like conspiracies like that but I want to share the informationthat is 100% accurate and not conspiracy. First of all no one denies that he is not Turkish descent. He has Crimean Tatar roots that also explains his appearence. He born in Buhara Uzbekistan in 1987 (not in 1984). Yes his original name by birth is Arsen İlyasov. He came to Turkey in 2000 (not in 2002). After 3 years (2003) he acquired Turkish citizenship (normal procedure nothing extra ordinary or illegal). In Turkish you can not use Ilyasov therefore given Ilyasova (mothers surname) and again Turkish version of Arsen (Ersan). I have WATCHED this guy in 2000 while playin Ulker U18 team alive in Turkey. I cant be wrong about date because I was Phd candidate by then. Uzbeks noticed him only in 2005 when was drafted by the NBA at the age of 18. Therefore please stop this nosense of Uzbekistan conspiracy. Moreover, it does not change the fact that he is Turkish, he learned basketball in Turkey, made his career in Turkey and serving for his country. Full stop.

Nothing wrong with what he did if true... Don't make it seem like he's evil or something
