The need to partake of Jesus Christ and the benefits of believing in him( John

What did Jesus mean when he told the people that they should eat of his flesh and drink his blood to have eternal life? Some people look at this verse with contempt. I attempt to understand that sentence using the Passover context rather than trying to mock him or accuse him of being cannabalistic.
