THE NEIGHBOR'S FAMILY - Exploring Outside the Map - Hello Neighbor (Full Game) Theory

Here’s what I’ve gathered: the neighbor couldn’t have been driving the pizza truck because during the cutscene of the accident, you also see him opening the passenger door of his car (the one in his yard) as if to let someone inside, then he goes to the other side of the car and sits in the driver’s seat. Then you see the accident and the hospital bed which is for sure the wife. The tragedy of the wife’s death leads the neighbor to insanity and he makes tons of crazy renovations to the house, renovations that are unsafe (I’ll get to that in a minute). Later on when you see the cutscene of the carnival, you get into a train car which is conducted by the cardboard cutout of the missing boy. The missing boy is in fact the neighbor’s son, and the cardboard cutout represents such. As you’re riding the train car, you pass through a kitchen where you can hear four people laughing, the neighbor and his family. You pass through some doors and are in the kitchen again, but this time everything is turned upside down and all you hear is the neighbor crying. You go through another set of doors and that’s where the cardboard cutout of the girl gets pushed down the slope. Just like the cardboard boy, the cardboard girl represents the neighbors “missing” daughter. This means that the son killed the daughter since he was the one conducting the train. In the backyard there is a coffin buried, and in the coffin is a key which unlocks a dollhouse. Since there aren’t any corpses in the game, the key to the dollhouse represents the daughter (dolls are a representation of the neighbors daughter while guitars are a representation of the neighbors son), meaning the neighbor buried his deceased daughter in the backyard. The unsafe renovations to the house include a ladder in the back which is fenced in by boards and wire, but if you go up the ladder it takes you to a hole in the ceiling overlooking a room. In the room is a dollhouse and dolls and the sons guitar. The daughter must have been literally pushed off the ceiling here by the son (this is represented by the train cutscene) and that is how she died. The neighbor, not wanting to lose his son too, locked his son in the basement. That’s why when you’re locked in the basement, the door is unlocked by the cardboard boy. The neighbor also didn’t want to draw any attention to the fact that his daughter was killed, so he put up the “simming” signs so that no one would suspect him or his son. In short, the neighbor kept his son hostage in the basement after his son killed his daughter. The shadow boy is a representation of death and how no matter what the neighbor does to cover up what happened, death will always be there reminding him. For example, we’ve only ever seen the shadow boy in a negative light. He’s always been a bad thing, a game over. The mini game where you’re getting taller and taller while protecting younger you from the shadow boy represents overcoming the fear of death. The cutscene of seeing the shadow boy in the neighbors dilapidated house represents how, years later, even after the house is destroyed, you can still sense death and his trail of destruction. The other cutscene where the neighbor is putting up the “simming” signs but the shadow boy finds him and shines a flashlight on him represents how the neighbor tries to cover up what happens, but nothing he does can stop the presence of death. That’s a good reason why the shadow boy isn’t really complete, per se. He’s kind of an oddly shaped throbbing black figure that almost has the silhouette of a human but not quite. This is because death isn’t a human but rather an idea that conforms to everyone’s minds.

Thanks, I forgot to mention that. I think the “shadow boy” as Captain refers to him is a representation of Death. The memory of Death continually haunts the neighbor and lingers in his house. For example, in the cutscene where the neighbor is putting up the “simming” posters, the shadow boy shines a flashlight on him. This represents how death will be a constant reminder of what happened and nothing, not even trying to cover it up, can change that.

I thought of that too. When I saw the train pushing that cardboard cutout I instantly realised just the thing that is written in here. But what about what happened to the boy in the basement? Did he probably turn into the Shadow? Not physically, but maybe that was what caused the neighbor to have visions of a shadow haunting him everywhere. Like, it was a foundation of it, not just the abstraction of "death", but rather a haunting memory.

I just expected Hello Neighbour to not end on a wild goose chase. They had such a good game going, not just the sense of the actual gameplay but in the sense of the different updates and alphas and they played mind games with the puzzles and the fact that they kept changing and adding things to the house. I saw amazing potential because I had never seen developers play games like the hello neighbour developers did. I feel like it just went no where. I think they could have done something more.

remember the rollercoaster? The shadow kid was operating it and you passed a "happy" room and then a more "dark" room, this could show you the psychology of his kid and what was he goimg through. At the end, little hands popped out of the rollercoaster, which looked like the hands of the shadow boy who then pushed the little girl and killed it. So i guess it has something to do with neighbors kid killing his sister after he's mom died in the car accident. Then, the kid killed his daughter and the neighbour kept his son in the basement? I think its somewhere around that. Just pay attention at thr nightmares and cut scenes there are many clues

I’m still piecing together a theory myself, but I feel like that family photo confirms what you’ve been estimating from the beginning, Cap. We, the protagonist, are the neighbor’s son. If you compare the boy in the photo to the child protagonist from the beginning of the game, they’re identical. They share the same eyebrows, ears, chin swirl, head shape, and possibly the same nose. So, we’re either his son, or we’re some kid who looks shockingly similar to him, which honestly could be the reason for our abduction if we are in fact, not his kin.

Ok, I have been seeing so many theory’s on this game and I think they are all wrong. This is my theory. As a kid you are an aspiring house flipper. You see your neighbors house and feel you have to fix it. So you go into the neighbors house and break into his basement. There you find out he is a house flipper too. So he captures you and then you have to break out. You grow old and you get a notice saying that you have to flip a house. He goes to the house and sees the ghost of the neighbor. He falls asleep and dreams of the perfect flipped house, but the neighbor is there. The rest of the game is basically the neighbor trying to stop the protagonist from learning the house flipping secrets.

My theory is that the neighbor lost a kid in a car accident, and so kidnapped kids from around the town, the player included, to make himself feel better. But eventually he felt guilty about it, and so started putting up missing posters. The ghost boy is symbolic of the player's trauma of being kidnapped, and the ending is about overcoming it.

I’d love to see a full theory video. I’m still a bit peeved that your original theory was retconned. Still, I’d love to see your final thoughts. Personally, I wonder if maybe the neighbor was trying to bring his missing/dead kids back to life by kidnapping the protagonist to trade with the devil? Maybe that’s why he had a whole setup in the basement, to kidnap a boy, a girl, and maybe even a woman to trade for his own family? That’s the best theory I’ve got that goes beyond “there was never any real story intended and that’s why the final version of this game seems cobbled together and nonsensical.” Lol Anyway, I really hope you do a full theory video, as I’d love to see it. 😊

OK I just noticed something weird: from your theories and mine, and the most recent ones, we assume that we actually aren't related to the neighbor. Now, in all the versions of the game, and anywhere, the only absolute proof of the neighbor's whole family is that picture in Act 3 of the full release. We see the neighbor, his wife, his daughter and his son. But in all the versions, we only get clues that the wife and daughter exist. We have the kids' rooms, but the items in there are mostly girly. In the rollercoaster dream, we have clues of the daughter but not the son, as if she mattered more. What that dream or nightmare could mean is either that they couldn't save or quite grab on to the daughter, or that we murdered or just killed her. In the car crash nightmare, the car only has two seats and only a clue for the wife, and in the hospital nightmare, there is only one bed, so we know the daughter didn't die in the car crash. We get the high heels for the wife, a handbag, a doll of her, and you can tell who is who so it is a doll of HER because of their hair. Now, we actually never get a single clue that is focused only on the son and not both of the children. So why is he left out? And that's why it's extremely plausible that we actually are the neighbor's son. But then what happened to the sister and why is the son left out like that? Well I don't know for sure what happened to the sister, maybe she commited suicide because the mom died, and then the boy was probably left up for adoption, which explains why if we were the neighbor's son, it looks like we see him for the first time in Act 1. Now in some Alphas of the game, we could find a church with a graveyard, a factory, a high school, a hospital, and the Golden Apple supermarket. The church and hospital already have an explanation, but the factory, high school and supermarket don't have a clear one. We only get a minigame in a classroom, which would be the high school (or any level of school really), another one in a supermarket, but we get no clue whatsoever for the factory... Those minigames probably represent old memories and fears that are common for a kid, like getting lost in the supermarket, or taking your first test and being left out by other kids at school... Being left out... If you watched one of The Game Theorists' videos, in it they talk about how in the full release of the game, there are always symbols of four things together, the fourth one being left out. Now they theorized that this represented the four messenger angels of heaven. The fourth one was Lucifer, who thought he could be greater than God and fell down from Heaven to become the devil. This strongly reinforces the theory that the neighbor sold his soul to the devil. Many clues point to this being true, and the fact that the number 666 is under the neighbor's shoe confirms that there is something devil related in this story. Now the Golden Apple supermarket is named "Golden Apple," and so many golden apples can be found throughout all the versions of the game. The Game Theorists theorized that it represented the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden, which the serpent, or devil, tempted Adam and Eve to take a bite from though God forbid it, Original Sin (by the way I theorized that the golden apple was the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge since the Game Theorists talked about the devil, which was long before them, I also theorized about the car crash since the very first version of the game where the car was parked on the fence and being repaired, and I also instantly made the connection that this is why the neighbor sold his soul to the devil). Now maybe this supermarket is where the neighbor sold his soul to the devil, but why a supermarket? And I realized just writing this that it's metaphoric for "selling his soul." He probably didn't even do it there but supermarkets sell things, and the neighbor sold his soul to the devil... So yeah. But this whole fourth something being left out thing might represent something else. Well, the neighbor's family has four people in it. If you follow that idea that the wife first died in the car crash, something happened to the sister, and then the son was left for adoption, then two of the family members could be seen as the left out ones; the boys; the son or the father/neighbor. Yes, either the boy is left out of the family as he was adopted, or the father is left out because he is left alone. But I still strongly agree with GT's theory. Also, something else that caught my attention was that throughout the whole game and its versions, the neighbor has used mannequins to symbolized people of all sorts. Maybe even the kid protagonist, you, do that too, as seen in the minigames, which are dreams. But in Alpha 1, there was a classroom in the house. There was a female teacher mannequin. Maybe the neighbor's wife was a teacher. I'm not sure how because I can't think right now but maybe when driving home from school or to school or I don't know what kind of weird mix-matched direction, that's when they had the car accident, the neighbor took his wife to the emergency hospital, and somehow someway the kids or maybe just the boy got lost, and set up for adoption. This explains the school building. It also explains why it was the neighbor who was putting up the missing papers of a boy and a girl. But now that I think about it, the rollercoaster nightmare wasn't trying to save the girl, and that's definitely the girl, look at her hair, but it was denitely pushing her off. She would've already been falling if we were saving her, but she was standing upright and we pushed her off in the grave. So someone murdered her. Maybe the devil has to do with this. And again, different subject though, the shadow people are the fears of you and the neighbor. There are two of them. The adult shadow and the kid shadow. The adult shadow is your fear, all your dreams and nightmares and fear rooms always have giant things, with exaggerated proportions that make you feel small. And all this symbolizes the fear of when you were kidnapped, and being defensless and powerless when seious things happened, and being left out. As for the neighbor, the kid shadow haunts him for obvious reasons. That's why he kidnaps children btw, making a deal with the devil. We get some scenes where we are the neighbor, and we see the kid shadow haunt us. Now, for the factory, the only thing I see that concerns that is the trains. The neighbor always has so many trains going through his house, and we don't know why... OK so the boxes in the very first version of the game have the date 18/04 on them, and I found that the year 1804 was the year the very first train was created. And get it? Trains, 1804, boxes, mass production, factory? Yeah... And finally, I wanted to mention the QR codes and coded stuff in the Alphas. I only remember the thing that said "We had to hide it, they might find out," so I'll look that up afterward. But that could concern anything right? But I remember in an Alpha, a whole room on the roof of the house was hidden with a giant piece of fabric, and I think it was the train station. There was also a hidden grave, and trees with golden apples, and so many more! But then again, I'm not sure what the train represents, it could be so many things... And maybe the neighbor owned the factory, explaining his wealth... If we actually are the neighbor's son, then it explains why we start in the boy's room in the finale. OH AND HANDS SHAKING ARE A SIGN OF MAKING A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL I GUESS. *Thank you for reading all that. The Theory- You are not the neighbors family or son. You are a kid who noticed the neighbor locking his son in the basement for killing his sister (by accident).Afraid you might call the Police,he kidnaps you and throws you into the basement.While you try to escape You imagine the house being all twisted and crazy and huge! -fast forward a few years- You’re now Evicted and you decide to move back to your old town.After all the traumatic memories from the house you finally recall The Real Memory.His house wasn’t Twisted You Imagined it.You’re a Kid who suffered a traumatic kidnapping,as you lived in his house for a few years (at most).While you were at his house You helped his son escape. You Saved him. You Won The Game.And The Shadow Man is the neighbor’s Guilt and karma catching up to him. PS: The wife died in a car accident with a Pizza Truck.

I think I have a theory that's not completely filled in all the gaps, but it's something. So you are a boy who lives across the street from a man who has a nice family. One day your neighbor and his wife get in a car accident and unfortunately his wife passes away. And his daughter goes to a carnival and there's an accident with one of the rides that kills his daughter. You as a little boy don't really take notice that the neighbor has been secluded in his house more often. One day as your playing with your ball you hear screams coming from the neighbors house. You filled with curiosity look into his house to see what's going on. The neighbor sees you looking through the window and throws you off his lawn. He doesn't abduct you because no policeman would believe that you saw a child being kidnapped especially if his basement is normal and only filled with a water heater and washing machine. To keep the police and anyone else of his track the neighbor puts up missing posters but is still struggling with grief and guilt. ( which to me is what the neighbors ghost child is, an almost real being that reminds him of his deeds.) You then sneak into his house and unlock the basement. The neighbor realizes that you would know the secret entrance and can't afford to let you go. After several weeks you are saved by the neighbors son who was the child trapped in the basement. Although you don't see him, you do see a cardboard cut out of him. You leave the basement and get away from the neighbors yard. And the neighbors son distracts him so that you can get away. You get to your house and your parents get home from their vacation you tell them the whole story and your parents call the police the neighbor in a panic takes his son and burns his house and the evidence. Police and firemen arrive and put out the fire. (This burning down the house part could have occurred after any number of years especially since your character would most likely have moved and never gone near the house again), after about 6 years you have moved into your own apartment but not being able to make ends meet financially you get evicted and must move away. And the first place you decide to go is back to your old house that your parents give you after they hear that you've been evicted. Getting to your old neighborhood you are filled with good and bad memories. One of which is the ghost child that is your guilt for not having saved the child in the basement. The memories overwhelm you and you escape reality into a nightmare. The neighbors house is massive, with other houses and rooms jutting out and you hear the same child's scream. ( the house is massive because as a child it would have seemed like an endless maze of rooms.) You complete the same task as before and eventually fight a bigger neighbor (most likely the massive fear and pain he has caused you that makes him feel big.) and win the inner battle you've had with him. You then fight the guilt that has plagued you for years by protecting yourself with thoughts that maybe you did all that you could.) and as you lean on these you become stronger and defeat the guilt. You then wake up in a solid white expanse of space. But in this you see a house you look into the house and see the neighbor and he looks frightened you look into the next window and realize that the neighbor had dealt with the same consuming guilt as you. That maybe he could've done more to save his family. But instead of facing it he hid it and forced it into the inner depths of his mind and heart. You then head to your escape and wake up having put at rest the troubles of the past and are able to move outside and take a breath of fresh air. Well I hope you like my theory I had been stumped as to the story and to be honest I still am. The son being the trapped child could potentially be wrong and there could be his daughter as well and that's why there were two rooms but at the same time the 2nd room is unfinished so I don't think there is another child. (Possibly) Maybe the neighbor felt overwhelmed by him being the sole parent and therefore locked his child in the basement. Or maybe he just didn't want to give up space in his house that meant so much to him and forced his child to live downstairs with some comforts of home life like a tv, fridge, bed, food, and water. But anyways CaptainSauce I've really enjoyed your Playthrough of Hello Neighbor it's been quite a ride and definitely an exciting one. Anyways hope you have a good day and GG!

The satellite dish is actually one of the Voyagers (Voyager 1&2), you can tell by the golden disk. The disk is actually a "golden records".

I want a theory video! :D I really hope you're doing one. After your playthrough I was left wondering if the neighbor was perhaps supposed to have a split personality, and without 'knowing' it he would capture children and lock them in his basement. His 'evil' side would be the shadow boy, but his 'good' side didn't know about it consciously, so he helped putting up the posters for the missing children etc. The protagonist would be one of his victims, who managed to escape but was left traumatized and eventually moved away. His suppressed memories only resurfaced once he moved back into his childhood home. Regarding the satellite: is has been pointed out by others, it seems to be the Voyager Golden Record. Maybe this is supposed to mean that the story of the final built is really not the same as in the earlier versions of the game, because it's on a different planet! So all the other theories could still be true ;D

Theory! When his duaghter got pushed off the roof from his son. He got mad so he put the son in the basement aka the shadow boy. And in act 2 I think. you need to dig open a grave for the doll house key. The grave was the daughter. And his son is in the basement either dead or alive. The wife is at the grave yard. And the neighbor put up missing. Signs and acted like his son was missing and duaghter he didn’t want people to know his son pushed his duaghter off the roof so he put up missing signs and buried her! In his back yard

I propose that the neighbor is the characters uncle. A child went missing (maybe your sister or cousin) and he and your mother were out putting up missing fliers when disaster struck and your mother was struck by the pizza truck. Distraught by this second loss your uncle tries to hide you away and keep you safe while he continues searching for the missing child, until the day you escape and slip into the system away from his care. You return years later unknowingly entering a ghost town that is only occupied by the ghost of your uncle, the shadow demon of the realm and your own subconscious memories. Or this game is a senseless time waster that we have given far too much attention to.

In case you were wonderihg what the 'satellite' was, it is one of the voyager space craft. They had a gold plate with markings meant for extraterrestrial life to see. I have no idea what that has to do with the game

Sauce, the satellite you found is a nod to the voyager 1 & 2 spacecraft, both of which had golden records on them sporting that exact diagram. I doubt it has any role in the story of the game, but if you're interested in it there is info about it on the NASA website.

13:00 the thingy you saw near the lake was the disc that nasa sent to outer space for "aliens" to see, it hade pictures of earth, the nonesense you pointed out was how to play the disc, they made it in gold so it wouldnt dissolve into space, and somehow it crashed
