First 2 chords are just like the classic Steely Dan chromatic progression they use on both 'Deacon Blues' and 'Peg', then he takes it somewhere else...thanks for sharing this one, Glasper has some really unique harmonic things going which are all his own.

Thanks for great video! But at 4'51", Bb(13,b9) seems like B(b13,b9) although the keyboard and sound indicate the former.

I'm a little new to theory - is there a difference between Dmaj9add6 and Dmaj13? Why the distinction? is it because the 6th is played a 'closed' position (ie. played after the 5th) rather than being an extension after 7th? (I don't play piano and so I can't see what notes are being played)

i thought the aflat 13 chord was a "A flat13" chord and I could figure out how

Thanks!! Is there a reason why call it "Liftoff"?
@leonwaves4 жыл бұрын
It’s the introduction to the album listening experience. A “liftoff” into space, so to speak.

Cool video man! I think I would've liked to see a functional analysis in here too. Like for example, to my ear, the reason that G leads back to to B is that it's functioning like a chromatic mediant, i.e. {bVI} --> I, and that A and D before the G seems to be a type of secondary ii V, resulting in [{ii/bVI} {V/bVI}] --> {bVI} --> I. You might even stretch the argument further and call that F#add2/A# just an A#alt, and that it's a tritone sub for the secondary dominant of the Amin. That would leave you with: I [{tri/V/ii/bVI} {ii/bVI} {V/bVI}] --> {bVI} --> I Let me know what you think of that! Thanks again for this and nice playing! I had wondered about this song for quite awhile, so thanks for studying it and sharing.

Yes, yes! I agree with you 👌🏻 several ways of looking at it.

Leon Waves Let me know if you'd ever like to collab on a video. I make similar videos about contemporary Japanese music and even some VGM. Kinda a midpoint between you and 8-bit Music Theory. Latest one applies some of Jacob's teachings about the circle of fifths to stuff from Hisaishi.

This all makes sense except I don't understand why the Gm resolves so god damn well to the B! Since when is b6m to 1 a real cadence? It works incredibly well I just don't understand why
@leonwaves4 жыл бұрын
Do you mean Gmaj7/9, not G minor? If so, it is an interesting move, right?! I think the melody from A to G to F# sets us up to land on any chord where the F# is important (like B major, D major, or F# major chords).
@TomRivieremusic3 жыл бұрын
Great! It's amazing how chords generate really the basics of all creativity.BTW you a very good pianist yourself. You need to record the drums to fit the mix. The rim shots are too loud. This is my opinion only.
@lubumbus73353 жыл бұрын
Real noob here but what’s the key? I always have trouble figuring out whether it’s major or minor due to its relevant major/minors

Why call those add6 chords when they’re 13th chords?
@hoguvalesco80744 жыл бұрын
Great video but i think that isn't a A -9, it's a A half-diminished without the E in the chords, voicing goes A - G - C - F#
