Schnieder is 100% correct. It was a combination of a bunch of oranges. Even calling the color TNT Express is not correct. It may scan down to TNT Express. But it's not. If you know anything about scanning paints... you will get the closest representation of the color. Unless, of course, you scan an actual color. For example. If you scan Plumb Crazy Purple, it is very likely that the scanner is going to say that it is Plumb Crazy Purple. However. If the color had been modified in any way the scanner is going to give you a color and code of its closest representation of the color scanned. So, no. It's not really TNT Express. But that's about as close as you are going to get.

It was probably a lot like Operation Petticoat. (not enough white primer, not enough red primer, so mix it all and paint the boat) "We don't have enough of this orange, but we have a bunch of this other orange but not enough of it either." "Well, mix them all together so that all the cars match."

It’s important to remember the true history of that flag and what the civil war was about but also to be able to separate that from things like this show and not blindly group them together. The color of the General Lee was 1979 Chrysler Corp code V3, Flame Orange. Book it and take it to the bank because the General Lee was V3 Flame Orange. The fact the name is flame orange is what lead to the confusion with the Corvette Flame Red color. A body shop in late 1978 looking to paint a Charger orange would’ve pulled their chip book and went to the newest chips to find the color. If you had been in a body shop like myself at that time in history, you’d understand why. First, any self respecting body man when asked to paint a Dodge car a non-original color would’ve just instinctively flipped to Chrysler Corp colors to find that orange. And, they would’ve started with the newest chips in the book which would’ve been the brand new 1979 chips at the time the General Lee was painted. Chips even a year old were covered in greasy finger prints and paint splatters. The painter simply would’ve flipped through the newest Chrysler Corp chips and I know that from experience. When doing so, they would’ve happened upon the beautiful 1979 Chrysler Corp flame orange which is paint code V3. A color very is similar to Hemi Orange which is paint code V2, but without the metallic. The fog caused by the passing of time and the similar name is the reason Corvette Flame Red mistakenly got named the original color. It never was. As for why the color scanner identified it as TNT Express Orange is simple, today paint is mixed on a scale that measures to the thousandth of a gram, but in late 1978 paint was mixed by lowering a worm gear driven ‘fill to line’ into the paint canister. A method NOT remotely as precise as today’s scale method which often lead to very poor paint matches back in the day. This crude method of mixing paint, a 30 year old painted deck lid to scan, and a database of every shade of orange ever made was what lead to the misidentification of the correct color. The color of the Georgia General lees was 1979 Chrysler Corp flame orange.
