Frankly, it's impossible for me to think of anything but Danny Trejo after Raven suggested him. This guy who's a complete badass in everything you put him in, but he's also the nicest guy in the world? Yeah, that sounds about right. (And come on... "Atrejo"? It's just too perfect. lol) Damn it, now I want to visit Atreyu's donut shop. 😋🍩

I think it would Atrayeu's "inner self" would be an adult version of himself. Despite still being a kid, acts (in a way) like an adult. Facing his fears and heading on despite whatever crazy stuff his adventures throws at him.

The reason the fight with G’mork was so short was actually due to the prop being too heavy for the actor almost knocking him unconscious and it almost poked out his eye with the claws. They didn’t do a second take because of that reason.

The reason Artax sinks in the swamp but Atreyu doesn't is explained in the original book. The auryn amulet that Atreyu wears protects him from the swamp's evil sadness magic, so he doesn't sink. Artax isn't wearing the amulet, so he sinks. When Atreyu offers the amulet to artax to keep him from sinking, Artax refuses. "The amulet was entrusted to you. If I wore it, you would be consumed by the swamp and Fantasia would be lost". It adds a layer of heroic sacrifice to Artax's death (Artax talks in the book).

I think the point of the Mirror Gate is that inside Atrayeu is a scared boy that just wants to run away and hide. But that boy is Bastian, who, with a little prodding, shows his own inner-courage and faces his fears in the end. So, it's not all bad.

I thought the Empress only revealed that Bastian needed to give her a new name at the very end, because she needed him to get invested enough in their world that he would _want_ to save it, hence all the build-up and the preceding journey with a relatable hero. If they showed their hand too early, they risked Bastian getting bored, or not taking the situation seriously enough, and closing the book, dooming them all.

Just a quick heads up, as mediocre as "The Neverending Story 2" was as a movie, this & the first movie actually make up the entire story of the original book. However, in the book, Bastian becomes corrupted with power & becomes a control freak. But the bigger twist was that there was originally one child that came before Bastian, and that child grew up to be Mr. Coriander, the book shop owner. That's why he warned Bastian earlier in the beginning about the book "not being for him," he's been through this sort of thing before.

I love this movie, but a lot of the inconsistencies are either explained, or just done differently in the book. Atreyu doesn't sink because the auryn provides protection from most magical effects. He isn't rescued from the swamp by Falkor, he saves him from a giant spider made out of millions of bugs, by volunteering to take the venom into himself, (Somekind of bargain has to struck to save the victims of that venom.) He did go through the first gate unscathed and then he lost his sense of fear making him primed to face the mirror gate, this was actually the same in the movie. After passing that gate he lost his memories which made him able to pass the third gate, the key less gate. As long as you desire to go through the gate you can't pass through it, but since he couldn't even remember why he was there, he wasn't interested in the door, so it unlocked. After messing around for a bit he finally got through, and fortunately all the things he had lost returned. The southern oracle didn't look like the first gate, or anything it was just a voice that spoke and only understood ryhme. I won't even get into how the 'ending' differed or all the stuff that happened afterwards because this comment is already needlessly long, however if the next adaptation will actually include these elements, I couldn't be more excited to see it come to life. One last thing; Atreyu is supposed to have green skin.

Sadly the movie ends halfway through the book with a tacked-on ending and the sequels have little to nothing to do with the book. Most of the plot holes happen, because we are missing half of the book. For example, this story was to draw Bastian in specifically. other children would read a different story and have. The bookseller was one such child. Other plot holes are because the story is the important part. Time, space and other things can take a backseat to the imagination. Remember when you were a child? Your current you would take these flights of fantasy apart. Also, the Nothing will return in time and another child will read the Neverencding Story, following another hero to rebuild Fantasia again. that's why it is the Neverending Story, because it doesn't end.

Fun Fact (or not-so-Fun Fact): The author of the original book really hated this movie because of how much they changed the story. He hated it so much, in fact, that he actually threatened to sue the studio if they didn't halt production on the film. While I personally do love this movie I can definitely understand WHY he was so upset. HE wrote a story about a young boy saving a world and then subsequently f**king it up because that's about what you can expect when you give nigh-omnipotent power to a literal child. In the book, Bastian was basically Anakin Skywalker before Anakin Skywalker.

Think about this for a second....the book/ characters of fantasia become aware that a boy in the real world is reading the story, so thats like a fourth wall break right there. Then at some point the Empress comments that there are others who are watching Bastian read the never-ending story which in this case would be Bob and Raven, so thats like another fourth wall break. Then a final fourth wall break has us the audience of the review watching Bob watch Bastian read a book that is basically sentient. So thats like 64 walls or something.

This could be because I got that "he's like me fr cry" moment, but even when I first saw the wolf thing talking about being a servant for something that orchestrates the nothing, it makes me think it represents the desire to give up which causes nothing to happen. My brain sees this and thinks "this looks like an allagory" for that because even in the sequels, they didn't really explain the thing much. The monster artistic people have to deal with constantly is opposition or darkness which can be represented by any challenge it takes to get something done from a story, to maintaining a business. Something that emphasizes everything insurmountable and terrifying, especially when the guy making it had no idea if it was going to be as legendarily beloved as it is now.

The most impressive thing about this movie is that it never pandered to kids. There were moments of real heartbreak and (potentially) scarring emotion. Atrax's death is insane. We may never have seen the entire scene like Atreyu, but we were left emotionally shocked, at the very least. There were no jokes. It was a serious moment that the kids watching had to journey through before making it to the satisfying ending. I can only hope the new version won't forget this and put in humor where it doesn't belong.

Honestly, I think the no humor thing is one of the WEAK spots of the film.

@teruienages962 Fair point about the quality of the movie. It didn't let up. I just foresee the humor panderimg to the lowest common denominator because producers underestimate a child's ability to process serious events. There would have to be at least one burp/fart joke ( a standard in all kid's fair these days) at an inappropriate time - like right after the swap swallows the horse.

I'm surprised at you, Bob. You managed to go the entire review without making a single (1970s) Battlestar Galactica reference.

It's been a while since I read the book, but if I recall correctly, the Swamp of Sadness scene is even more heartbreaking. Not only does Artax sink into the swamp, but as he does, he tells Atreyu to leave him to die because he is an old horse and his time is up AND ATREYU DOES LEAVE!

This is one of those movies that BAFFLES me-as a concept it’s amazing-but the delivery is awkward with not so good acting and a story full of plot holes-but it often gets the pass of being a good movie. I chock it up to how charming it is-and it’s overall weirdness-but I just don’t get why it’s revered the way it is.

32:15 - If you thought that was anticlimactic - in the book, Gmork is already chained up and half beaten to death by the nightmare-creature denizens of the town (they are evil, but they are creatures of Fantasia, so when they found out he serves the Nothing, they drugged him, tied him up, and then jumped into the Nothing) . When Atreyu tells him who he is, Gmork just... laughs at the irony and then dies. Although, when Atreyu foolishly goes closer, the dead werewolf's jaw snaps onto his leg and he almost dies there . Btw, it was explained Gmork is serving the Nothing because he is a creature of both Fantasia and the real world, as he is a Werewolf. In the cartoon, he is actually an anthro.

Fun fact, in the second expansion of Grim Dawn, you gain access to a portal to the shattered world, and the portal is pretty much the Southern Oracle... just a lot more detailed and with real nipples. :P

Great film.. But to be fair the narration at the end is not alluding to sequel books but the fact that the film only adapted about 1/3 of the original book. We literally see nothing after Bastian comes to "Fantastica". No desert of many colors, no memory loss, no Xeyide, (some elements were covered in the first sequel but changed), no ice cave of memories..

I imagine the remakes will probably be really inferior to the amazing first movie but be better than the sequels.

I like to think the auron (or however you spell it) is something of a placebo in a way in that it itself has no power on its own, but that it's only as powerful as you allow it and yourself to be. As long as Atrayeu had it, he had belief and courage, at least more so than when he didn't. He was already confident and brave, but knowing he had the auron with him amplified these traits he already possessed. We don't really see the auron do anything clear cut and magical to aide him, but he felt more confident and capable all the same when he had it and only experienced serious doubts when he didn't, until surviving his battle with the wolf. He still had his courage when facing down a dangerous foe, and he won the day even without the auron doing anything specific. I don't know, I'm probably just reaching, but that's my head cannon anyhow.

12:26 We were in a hotel and I think dad had turned on the TV and this was scene I was greeted to. Didn’t know what movie I was watching, all I remember was the horse drowned. And that’s stayed burned into my head for years. Didn’t find out til I was grown that the movie was called the Never Ending Story. All I remember was being really bothered by the horse dying. But I’ve always been sensitive to animal deaths 😢
