@@w.wilson5800 Actually a quasi-public company, which means that it combines the disadvantages of a government agency with the disadvantages of a private company. The US should go whole hog and nationalize it fully, like many other technologically advanced countries that actually have good rail passenger service unlike us. Nevertheless, in the 1980s, they managed to offer affordable Northeast Corridor service that was consistently cheaper than air travel (except when the airlines were having some kind of fare war that undoubtedly cost them more money than they made) and not too much more expensive than bus travel, and they didn't play games with the fares, and you could go down to South Station at any time and buy a ticket good on any non-premium train at any time, and it was always the same price for a given distance, and it just worked. Now they act like an airline, and it's horrible, with them ripping you off more the closer you get to the time you travel, and all seats being reserved, and often more expensive than competing air travel. And Congress only listens to their corporate masters, which want to get Amtrak out of the way so that everybody has to fly and/or buy a car and the fuel for it.

@Lucius_Chiaraviglio

@@maricelaperez6203 $33 when and what distance? They play games with the fares so that occasionally you might be able to get an affordable fare somewhere if your timing of making the reservation AND when your trip will be is JUST RIGHT, but that isn't what they usually offer for any reasonably long distance on the Northeast Corridor (like all the way from Boston to New York or all the way from Washington DC to New York). And if you are going on one of the long-distance routes (that they want to get rid of), it's even worse.

But will the trains go more quickly. We need higher speed trains and were not going to get it if they don’t designate tracks specially for the Acela trains. Instead of the trains going on old bridges which forces the trains to slow down . Either replace the tracks or fix the bridges. If you could work it out in the the northeast corridor then you could do it with trains going east to west with multiple lines starting from Maine. Starting from Washington. Starting from New York, Atlanta. Florida etc.all going cross country .With speeds of 200mph a lot more people would want to go especially those who are going to jobs and business people.

idk why they always say "the trains will be a much smoother ride". The ride quality is only as good as the rail and wheels train utilizes. consider the cheapest way for Amtrak to get new wheels would be to remove the worn out wheel assembly from one train, refurbish it for a 10th the price of a new assembly and smack on the next train. Secondly have you ridden on Amtrak rails? they arent the smoothest in the country. the trains feel like they will fall off them when they go over a switch and more then 40mph. hell amtraks rails are so bad the maximum most trains can go over a crossover is like 40mph. so they go from a fast 125mph cruising speed and get a limited clear BOOM 40mph baby. Higspeed rail at its finest. trains in Europe can cross tracks at like 210mph with no problem. Also who are kidding here? those trains were built in China and only the interior decor was installed in US. TWO Years later the train is collecting dust at a disused siding in Wilmington because the passenger ridership plumbeted and the new train is no longer needed lol."75% more capacity" on a train that 95% EMPTY lol. How many people will be on the train from WAS to Boston at maximum? 25? on a train that holds hundreds? the heck if im going to sit that close to someone for hours on end.

Cats01 Budd was bought by Thyssenkrupp in the 70s and had its chassis operations sold to Martinrea before filing for bankruptcy in 2014. St Louis Car Company went defunct in the mid-70s. Pullman folded in the late 60s because it couldn’t operate like it used to in a world becoming dominated by airlines. ACF still technically exists, and Pressed Steel was a British company that got folded into British Leyland, which itself went bankrupt, was nationalized, and then was restructured - but could not recover. None of this has to do with globalization.

Yes, globalization is great. It brought us efficiency and cheaper products.
@kvm1992

@@synesthesia101 What efficiency??? Do you not know what it means? It's the ability to do things well, successfully, and without waste. There's a lot of waste that comes from globalization. The economy's enemy is efficiency, sustainability, and preservation. It's all about inefficiency, infinite growth, and consumption. For things that come in abundance it sure is kept artificially scarce. Instead of having cheaper products and expensive products, why not free products?
