My uncle was a direct colleague of Duane Allman that recorded with him and a number of other really famous bands. You will never hear his name and now he's dead. I asked him once: "Uncle Bill, why aren't you famous?" He said: "There are 100 times as many good musicians that you'll never get a chance to hear than the few you've heard of because Nashville or Hollywood said you should. Being famous is no measure of how good you are and the greatest musicians to ever play probably died without anyone knowing who they were."

Josh Starkey All but the very largest-bodied acoustic bass guitars (Guild B-series from back in the day like the B-50, Ernie Ball Earthwood, Tacoma Thunderchief, Boulder Creek, and some boutique and custom builds like the Rigel acoustic bass, Toby Chennell Arco, and Lamont Flatback, a modern copy of an Earthwood) are all but inaudible anyway and have to be amplified to make bass sounds. If you're going smaller than those behemoths, why not go as small and manageable as you can? I have two Thunderchiefs (both all-acoustic, pre-Fender models, fretted with Slinky cobalt flatwounds and fretless with Rotosound TruBass strings for an upright-like tone, I added K & K Purebass pickups to them) to use with a guitar or two, or clawhammer banjo, fiddle and guitar for porch/fire pit jams. They're loud enough, but only just and you have to really dig in and beat on them. I also have a Phil Jones briefcase amp (battery or 120V powered) for when I need said jams to be audible to people outside of the circle of players. I might have Lamont build me a fretless Flatback (modern Earthwood clone), they're bigger and louder and could probably be played in an old-time stringband setting acoustically and be heard more than 10 feet away, but the fact is that 90%+ of acoustic basses require amplification, and I might consider an Acoustisonic bass for certain uses if it sounded natural enough.
@joshstarkey8883
@joshstarkey8883 4 жыл бұрын
@@The_sinner_Jim_Whitney Yeah my dad has a fretted 5 string Thundercheif. It's real nice, but very big and awkward for me. I've always thought anything less than an upright bass, but more than a comfortable semi-hollow was kind of a bad compromise. You can get the natural tone (amplified) with a small hollow or semi hollow body, but you often don't get the volume to keep up with other instruments until you scale up to upright. Too bad they're not really portable. Maybe someone will start making travel bases with detachable necks.
@The_sinner_Jim_Whitney
@The_sinner_Jim_Whitney 4 жыл бұрын
Josh Starkey There is an upright like that, I don't know who makes it but I've seen ads, looked pretty intriguing. I have my Thunderchiefs specifically because they actually keep up with a couple other instruments and aren't totally ridiculously expensive (I got mine for 900 and 1100), but I do wish I could play unplugged in louder stringband jams like I used to when I had an upright, so I'm thinking about selling my fretless Thunderchief and having a lined fretless Rigel or Lamont made, as they're even louder (though even bigger and more unwieldy) than the Tacoma. I don't play upright for jazz, just old-time, and the cost, upkeep, and space an upright takes up just aren't worth it to me.

What is the chain/processing on the acoustic/electric sounds? Normally with “dual sound” guitars (Godin A6 for example), you would want to plug the piezo to an acoustic amp and the electric humbucker to an electric guitar amp. If this Fender achieves the sounds without the need of two signal chains - it can be a big pro for simple recording, looping and gigging.

I have the tele version. I'm torn, i fall in and out of love with it. It doesn't sound as good as my real acoustics unplugged or plugged in, it's not as good as an electric at being an electric but it is fun and plays beautifully. Great for looping, i also take mine when i play bass in a band. That way in the gigbag it is super light and i can just bring it along, no one really notices the bass player also turning up with a guitar, which they would if you turn up with an electric, an acoustic and an amp. Occasionally a song calls for some texture or an extra guitar instead of a bass and i have so many sounds covered. Works great for that.

Very helpful to hear the down sides…which are often missing from videos made by guitar stores. On the other hand, your demo is hands down the best sounding with this guitar that I’ve seen. The looping was spectacular…but that was you. Thanks for an amazing video.

Thanks for being honest! I have the same 'issues' with it, even with just hearing your recording. Especially the electric sound is lacking some punch. Which makes sense, because the acoustic sound is probably most obvious - here we go - acoustically. ;-)

You speak the truth Willi. It hurts. lol I have $250 in all three of my guitars. Total. One's a special edition ESP AX-50. It's got those pickups that flap when you shake it. It also will only play if the cord is at the right angle. You have to prove you're worthy. It's badass.

I can see this being a valuable tool for the touring musician if it wasn’t overpriced like hell. A lot of people think only from the perspective of someone who only plays inside their own house but if you are a performer, something like this makes a lot of sense. If the music requires you to play both acoustic and electric guitar, it means you are bringing 4 instruments with you - 2 guitars for playing the show and two spares in case you break a string or something goes wrong. This instrument could potentially save you a lot of space which is absolutely VITAL when touring, however it is waaay overpriced at this point.

You write this long, detailed response justifying how incredible this guitar is and that its actually VITAL (all caps!) when touring yet its somehow overpriced? You admit that this one guitar serves the purpose of 2 guitars and means that you don't have to carry 4 guitar with you. And perhaps most importantly no other brand is offering a guitar like this. Where is the more affordable alternative? I think you made a very convincing case for Fender's price point.
@foggybrainmusic
@foggybrainmusic 4 жыл бұрын
@@XLBiker13 I didn't say "this guitar is VITAL" (all caps). I said that "space", as in physical space inside of a van (implied) is vital because it is, unless you are Metallica or John Mayer and can afford to bring another truck full of instruments.
@foggybrainmusic
@foggybrainmusic 4 жыл бұрын
@@XLBiker13 In terms of price point, you might be correct in saying that it technically isn't overpriced if it serves the purpose of 2 instruments. However for me, for that price I would like a better electric tone than what I've heard so far from people reviewing it.

@interruptor 4 жыл бұрын
@@thomaswilliam6566 that's exactly what I've been saying. There might be a studio application for this (blending electric and acoustic for example) but I've always thought the purpose of it is for live playing. It allows you to play an acoustic and electric set in a small bar (I've seen stages that hardly fit two people standing) and is much more manageable if you have to take public transport.
