I find it silly that so many Pakistanis attribute India's present growth to population size as if that's the most important thing. India always had a large population as indeed did China. However, for most of the 20th century, the population size was not seen as an asset but a burden. What has changed now is that economic growth has given purchasing power to parts of the population . Nobody cares about your population if they have no purchasing power. Pakistan has a population many times that of most European countries but no one would argue that Pakistan is doing well. Indeed the US has a population 1/5th of India but an economy many times its size. Even Japan & and Germany, which India will overtake in economy size in the next 2 years, have populations 1/15th or lesser of India's. Another point was made that India's policy has had consistency and that democracy was not a big factor. While the democracy argument can be reasonably made because countries have achieved economic progress without being democratic, consistency of policy by itself is not helpful. North Korea has a consistent policy, even Pakistan has had a consistently anti- India policy with Kashmir as its core. Hasnt helped. India didnt have a consistent policy, an U- turn was executed in the 1990's and many smaller u- turns have been executed since then, depending on the government in power. The present Indian government has somehow managed to get many things right and that shows. Credit does go to previous governments in part but consistency has not been the hallmark except at a broad macro level. Consistency by itself is not a virtue, one can be consistently wrong, and maintaining a position for that sake is foolish.
