Temporarily Offline Ham Radio

If your Xiegu radio suffers from BCI (Broadcast Interference from the AM band), you'll want this filter! If your radio doesn't... you must not be close to an AM broadcast station!

I grabbed one of the pre built ones for use with my G90 for POTA. SoCal has a LOT of strong AM Broadcast Stations and they caused havoc with the G90 especially with imaging on the 15m band. This filter eliminated the issue with the bonus that it is so much smaller than the VK3IL filter I built for in the shack.

Another thing to keep in mind is that a BCB low pass filter is probably going to attenuate less at the high end of the band (1550 is pretty high) than in middle and lower AM BCB. Also ham antennas are going to be closer to an effective length the higher the frequency.

I did a YT video not too long ago about the same thing. I found a BCB filter from Morgan Systems (Salt Lake UT) . The filter from Morgan is a solid box with SO-239 connectors. Pretty rugged. Worked pretty well too. I had a 1kw radio station at 1450AM that was causing me a headache on the G90 for 40m and 20m band. Nice video ;)

That will be great on some radios and some SWL radios. I worked a park with a AM station right buy. did not have a problem with my ICOM 7300. it did cut my RX a bit on 160 meters . but not a problem. the only trouble with this filter I see is trying to work 160 meter band. this would cut TX and RX on that band, but 80 meters and up will be fine. I don't hear that problem with a IC 705 or 905. my real old Icom 725 does not suffer from this. but a lot of radios do. I know a few parks with a AM station right buy. great place to build a crystal radio. great for a SOTA/POTA kit. 73's

Why do we see S3 on the meter when the antenna is disconnected? Yes, a MW filter is always very useful on these "wideband" radio types. Days of old had good rejection and that rejection to out of band signals was a sales point. Today, the sales point has flipped to being able to hear everything from DC to daylight. I think having a few inline filters offers the best flexibility for the many changing situations we encounter. Great review T.O. 73

This is why i got rid of my x6100. A $600 radio should not suffer from something so simple to remedy. I can accept it on the g90 since we are talking about a $400 radio. I REALLY hope that Xiegu fixes this issue on their new radio but I doubt they will.

I noticed that the problem is more pronounced when I use an EFHW. The problem disappears when using my 6BTV. I have also seen it to a far lesser degree with my IC7300. My Elecraft rigs are immune. I;m in the Chicago market with three clear channel stations.

Is this specific to the xiegu? Does your IC705 already have broadcast filters built-in?
@JonathanKayne
@JonathanKayne Жыл бұрын
Yeah it's a Xiegu thing. ICOM, Yaesu, elecraft all made sure their filters properly block the broadcast AM bands in their frontend. You could probably be two feet from the station antenna and still not hear a thing on the 705. Xiegu doesn't seem to care.
@temporarilyoffline
@temporarilyoffline Жыл бұрын
There are some other recievers (I don't have a list) that are effected, but the 705 isn't one of them (although it has other problems)
@DennisMathias
@DennisMathias Жыл бұрын
So you can transmit through this? Wouldn't an attenuator on receive do the same thing? And a basic question, are you hearing this station out of band..i.e., are you hearing it on 75 meters. What prompted you to research a device like this? Now, 160m would be desireable too and I don't think this is going to work for that. What's needed is a type of preselector or a series of filters to 'notch out' the broadcast band. Or ideally really good front end filters that track with tuning. Roofing filter if you will. Shortcoming with the radio I would say.
@temporarilyoffline
@temporarilyoffline Жыл бұрын
Yes. You can TX through it, but you can't auto-tune with it in place (remove, tune up, replace). Lots of people complained about the Xiegu AM overload, Dan stepped up with a solution. What this manifests as is an almost completely useless radio when there is a nearby strong AM transmitter.

How is it "new and improved"? Just the connectors? I ordered and built one after your last video. It works ok, but I am about a mile from a 10,000w AM station and it can't fully repress that signal. The station goes down to 2000w at night and it works much better.

your video with the VNA only goes down to 500KHz but looking at the slope the attenuation will be high at 472-479KHz., Looks like I'll have to design a low pass filter which will pass below and attenuate above 500KHz. Being an E.E, has it's advantages... 73 Glenn WA4AOS@@temporarilyoffline
