Yes, very much so...Los Angeles continues to be ranked as the worst city for smog, but is still a lot better than even 10 years ago...the standards implemented by the EPA continue to get stricter ever year, so even though it's still America's smoggiest city, you can now breathe the air and not feel like you're smoking a pack of cigarettes a day, lol.

Live up north now, haven't been down to LA in about five years. Glad to see they've smoothed things out a bit heading into the Valley. Lived in Reseda as a kid and grandparents were in Torrance. It was hell trying to visit them at times from that mess on the 405.
@FreewayBrent7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, what a nightmare it was, indeed. The widened freeway has certainly not come close to eliminating traffic congestion, but traffic does flow a lot better now during off-peak hours, and even during the long periods of rush hour, traffic delays aren't *as* intense as they used to be. Even better is the fact that it's a much safer freeway corridor now...full shoulders, improved on and off-ramps and even the lanes themselves are wider now. Thanks for watching; feel free to check out my Pacific Coast Highway or Santa Monica Freeway videos from the Southland. Thanks for commenting; cheers!

This freeway features a maximum of 20 lanes and a multitude of soaring flyover ramps, about 30 miles to the south. California and their crazy infrastructure, lol. Hey! It's been awhile since I last heard from you. I actually released a PCH video a few weeks ago, from Point Mugu State Park to the western Malibu city limits. Also released a 2-way video of the Grapevine, and there's the I-10 Santa Monica video I released 3 months ago. Not sure if you've seen any of those. Yeah, the improvements to the 405 are awesome. I've been able to sneak through the Westside of LA as late as 3:30 PM now, without sitting in traffic. Even at 5 or 6 PM, it's not quite as slow as it once was. The extra shoulder space is also appreciated, as well as the return of 12 foot wide lanes. Considering all the utility wires and pipelines that had to be completely rerouted as well, I'd say this was one of Caltrans' biggest undertakings in recent years.
@Travisjcjunky10 жыл бұрын
FreewayBrent i'll have to take a look at those, I saw the old grapevine one I think, and PCH is a cool one, so I want to take a look at that. I haven't driven PCH up there in a long time too.

Yeah man. The busiest motorway in the UK is the M25 by Heathrow, with something around 220,000 vehicles per day if I recall correctly. Meanwhile, this stretch of the 405 is now almost at 300,000 vehicles per day, and it's not even one of the top 5 busiest stretches of freeway in Greater LA. There's a few sections of the regional network that top 400,000 vehicles per day.

Have enough cars returned to the 405 to make this construction project an "all-for-naught"?
@FreewayBrent2 жыл бұрын
The traffic is most certainly still really bad for several hours per day. However, I think it's a definitive conclusion that the widening projects from the 90 to the 101 freeways (about 15 years worth of separate projects) were worth it. Back in 2000, it could easily take me 90-120 minutes to drive the northbound 405, anytime between 3-8 PM. Today? Usually no more than 45 minutes to cover those same 14 miles.

Hi Brent is that smog or smoke coming over the pass looking into the valley? Surely there would be a lot of smog with all of the traffic! And am I right in counting a 16 lane highway at one point? Massive!
@FreewayBrent9 жыл бұрын
+Kristy Warner : Hey there, Kristy. :-) You were looking at some smog...to be honest, the situation is A LOT better than it used to be, just 10 years ago, due to stringent anti-pollution standards enacted during the 2000's. Back in the 80's and 90's, I used to always leave Los Angeles with a bad sore throat...that's how bad the air quality was, back then. Today, no breathing problems or sore throats, even when there for weeks at a time. Almost 16 lanes...you counted 14 at the widest point. If you head south about 40 kilometers of where this video started, there is a 16 lane section...and about another 18 kilometers further south, is a whopping 18 lanes of freeway along the 405...both in Orange County. Yup, California sure knows how to build its freeways wide!

This is a redone 405? If that's the case then why are there filled in cracks and potholes? I must have missed something. lol
@FreewayBrent10 жыл бұрын
lol, yeah I hear ya. Truth be told, this project encountered a lot of complexities, including relocating so many different utilities and even a previously undiscovered revelation of artifacts, which led to numerous delays and cost overuns...and of course, all the freeway closures to accommodate key construction milestones. In the end, there wasn't any money to repave the northbound lanes, but the method of sealing the existing cracks has meant that the freeway is pretty smooth now. It looks a lot worse than it actually is.
