Thank you Donn! I truly feel that these are my favourite B&O headphones, they're so comfortable and fun sounding. Listening to ''Chicago - 25 or 6 to 4'' right now and they just give it that extra bottom end the music is naturally lacking in the recording. H95's will be more accurate, but I can wear these for longer and with HQ music they don't get fatiguing to listen to over time. Bloody LOVE them! I am sure you will to in the colour you desire!

Probably fantastic on the XBOX, thanks to your review I fully believe that :). I’ve got PS so I’ll pass, sadly, but music will always be No. 1 for me anyway. I’m still head over heels in love with my H95. Thanks for your review. Suddenly it was over, and I thought you’d still keep on going into different aspects of these headphones. I like to see what B&O has been doing lately. PS: the Portal is as Beo-«Play» as it gets, right? :)

I use it on PC as I am more a PC gamer myself. I've talked about them a few times now on the podcast and was already quite long in the tooth with this video to make it any longer :p The most important parts to me I think I covered, the comfort is off the charts and they're really fun to listen to both for gaming and music. I hadn't seen anyone show off the mic this long nor did anyone to my knowledge ad an atmos track in the review. And yes, the Beoplay Portal really puts the Play in to B&O :D

@@Mikipedia I meant to say that I enjoyed watching it and hearing your thoughts, time flew by for me and I was surprised there was all of a sudden just a couple of minutes left :). You have indeed covered a lot, so I wasn’t really missing anything. Maybe I am simply influenced by the long podcasts... Indeed, 17 is plenty :). Thanks again for your thoughts! I do find the Portal very interesting and if they had been designed for PS, I’d already have bought a pair. For movies I think the H95 still delivers extremely well (comparing to H9 3rd Gen for instance).

lol I guess that makes sense, normally I am here for two hours and a bit lol. The H95's are still the top dog for most situations, but the Portals can really feel like you have a subwoofer strapped to your head which is great for gaming and movies. Where the H95's are a razorblade in terms of delivery, that can get kind of fatiguing over time with listening. The Portals are more sort of a steak knife if you will, not as sharp but a lot of fun!

They are actually awful on Xbox (compared to Bluetooth and wired) they take a huge smack down to sound quality it's a big problem with them so many people reporting the issue. The portalbis good for music and movies and honestly really bad on Xbox but great on PC comfort is off the chart for me but honestly mine went back. The big issue here with the review is Atmos is a software algorithm so the HX being a better sounding headphone will just get their better sound and then have the Atmos as well. They are good and I really liked em but I returned mine with a heavy heart as for these over H95... Please that's just daft talk.

Hi, great video. Unfortunately I can’t download Dolby access app on my LG - G1 Oled TV. But TV does support Dolby digital, so I can listen to Dolby atmos on my soundbar via HDMI. By any chance do you know if I can listen to Dolby atmos on beoplay portal if I connect through bluetooth on my TV.

It only supports Atmos via the dongle or the 2.4ghz band for xbox, not on BT unfortunately.

Getting mine tomorrow, I bought them together with the HX’s but, they sent those first as the portals were on back order. Sadly, I returned the HX’s the very next day due to unacceptable sound quality at high volumes. Hopefully, the Portal’s will not suffer from the same issue. Will let you now when they get here.

What happened at higher volumes? I've had the hardest time getting my hands on some as they're basically always sold out :p I can set these to ''pain'' levels and I don't hear any real shift in the sound other than it goes too loud for comfort for me lol

@@Mikipedia My Hx had some very serious distortion at high volumes (over 70%) specially if using the B&O app to enhance the lower frequencies. The sound was akin to the drivers being blown. And it wasn’t just mine, The pair a friend of mine bought, had the same problem and, I have since found a couple of reviewers reporting the same issue. I sure hope the Portals’ are going to be Ok, as I am looking forwards to use them with my Xbox series X and, if they have the same issue, I am going to be royally upset and very disappointed.

I just tried them at max volume and to me that's painfully loud. I did it with a very bass heavy track and heard no distortion what so ever. 80% is about the best I can do for longer than 30 seconds without wincing too much and finished the rest of the song and still heard no issues. So I recommend these highly, although 60% volume is probably more than enough for me as I already can't hear anything else but the music beyond that :p

Thanks for this review and showing them off. Now I'm very tempted to hear them just for Dolby Atmos. Netflix would be on another level and its so much cheaper option as compared to a full speakers surround setup.

If your dealer has them, try them with PC or Xbox, it's amazing. Due to the nature of TV's and the data limit on BT, the Atmos won't work over BT as there is just not enough data bandwith. I love them though, they're so much fun :D

@@Mikipedia just a bit of clarification on that point - the Atmos processing is actually done on the source device (PC / Xbox) and is then transmitted via 2.4GHz in plain stereo. There’s no added bandwidth needed for Atmos when it’s handled in this way, as the headphones are just playing stereo sound - this helps reduce latency and processing demands in the headphones themselves. You can also send Atmos sound from that app to any pair of headphones (wired, bluetooth, or 2.4GHz) via the same virtual surround settings in Windows. In fact, it would be really interesting to hear your thoughts of how the Atmos sounds on the H4/HX/H95 in comparison, when you enable it in Windows for those headphones. I imagine there’s a bit of custom tuning in the sound profile of the Portal to just add that extra sparkle, but the positional cues should be very similar. Anyway, fantastic review. Well worth the wait. Very excited to enjoy the plush comfort of these - my navy pair arrive in the next month or so.

Thanks for the great video!! I spent a long time debating between the Portal and the HX, but upon trying both out in-store, it was obvious that Portal was the right choice for me. I'm very sensitive to noise cancellation "cabin pressure", and on the Portal, you can adjust the level of noise cancellation directly from the headphones (maybe there are around 7 or 9 different levels?). However, on the HX, I believe you only have this option in the app as the swipe adjustments on the HX only toggle between max transparency and max noise cancellation.

Thank you! By the sound of it I think you got to try the H9 3rd gen, because the HX's have the same type of ANC the portals have. I have the same sensitivity to ANC you seem to have and the H9 3rd gen and older have the old style of ANC that just blasts your ears and to me it's very uncomfortable. These newer headphones have adaptive ANC which only ''blasts'' when needed and makes all the difference in the world to me and is far superior in terms of comfort. Either way, the Portal is fantastic, highly recommended!!!

fantastic review. thank you for the insight. do you happen to know if the portal and HX are significantly different in any way with regard to music quality playback? if they are the same, i was thinking of getting the portal to mostly enjoy for music and then using them for xbox/pc on occasion but i do already have a gaming headset that i'm fine with.

Thank you! I haven't been able to get my hands on some HX's yet. Two other people have told me they liked the portal better, especially at extreme volume. But like I said, no first hand experience yet, I must say I love the Portals. They basically do everything beyond well :D

Yes, they are. I have H4 gen 2's too and they are very good and comfy, but I do think the portals are a fair bit better.

Hi Claes, I don't think so as far as I am aware they don't have gyroscoop sensor in it. Some of it may work, but not like with the apple airpods max I don't think. I am not 100% on this but fairly sure. Thanks for watching and commenting!

yeah, they sound really good and very playful and with Atmos enabled for gaming and movies and such they sound incredible. They go super low too, give you that rumble that's you're not used to with any other B&O headphones.

Hi Michael, they both have a 3.5mm connection. The H95's are superb in every way, but for prolonged use to me the Portals are more comfortable to wear. The Portals are easier in a way because you don't have the near perfection expectation, but for audio bliss not much beats the H95's. I doubt this makes it any easier lol

I hear also the Dolby sound effect with favourite my old Form 2. I am not sure if I need these new headphones. Tell me what you hear more. More bass certainly. I will try them but I don't like the not interchangeable Battery. Navy color looks good for me.

You hear some of the dolby effect because I recorded it with the Atmos decoder being on, but then YT compresses it a lot. It's much more vivid and lifelike on my side and the bass is more precise and bigger than when I even listen to it with the Portals on YT. Thing is, to get Dolby Atmos on either Xbox or pc you need the codec and they normally charge 15 euro for that, besides that, to get the best out of it you need headphones that can follow the dolby curve and that's why the licensing also matters. Because Dolby approved these headphones from the factory with their sound signature, which is why they totally change when in ''Atmos mode''. The battery is still serviceable, you get to it by taking the right earcup off and removing 5 little screws and then the ribbon cable to the battery. It's easy really, just not hot swappable like other older B&O headphones used to have. Your dealer can order you a battery as a service item without issue!

Which ever you like, the app should switch over and go black, I think the default is movie, but you can also customise it. The app will show you if the headphones are in atmos mode.

Portal issues Sound quality is great but I have encountered many issues. I would like to include the issues because I have watched a lot of reviews and these issues have either not been brought up or experienced. - [ ] Audio cuts in and out on Xbox and P.C. (Worst on pc) - [ ] Sound cuts out of pushed to max on headset (not if adjusted on app) - [ ] No noise gate setting - [ ] Tested mic and voice sounds far away - [ ] Tested mic and background noise is very noticeable. Button presses can be heard from controller. - [ ] Voice/game volume mixer does not mix on P.C. - [ ] Settings do not save when headset is turned on and off or switching modes. - [ ] Audio cues need to be louder voice/game mixer is maxed or in the middle. - [ ] Volume cues would be nice at 1/2 and max volume. - [ ] No command to end call. - [ ] No command for next/previous song. - [ ] Dong for wireless PS5 connection (sold separately) - [ ] Option to connect to Xbox automatically when turned on instead on Bluetooth. - [ ] Better side tone (own voice could be louder) - [ ] Make Bluetooth eq the same for Bluetooth land Xbox mode. (Full eq is great) - [ ] Bluetooth and Xbox connection simultaneously. - [ ] Optional boom arm mic.
