if snobbery is so bad, why does everyone want knock-offs of the 70s synths that 'gatekeepers' have, instead of original new synths?
@jerrybriardy9 ай бұрын
I am a long time musician, took up guitar when the Beatles were still together, later bass, piano, harmonica etc. I always thought synthesizors sounded really cool but they were always too expensive. Times have changed. Here I am in my 60s and have taken up a whole new amazing set of instruments. I bought a Behringer TD-3 when I saw how cheap they were, was amazed, and have since acquired 3 Korg Volcas, an FM, a Sample, and a Bass and an IK UNO, a Behringer Pro VS Mini, a Monotron Duo and a Monotron Delay. Not only have these inexpensive synths opened new doors, but they have shown me new uses for my digital pianos. I have no idea what the synth snobs are going on about and care even less. This is a whole new musical world for me.
@JH-lo9ut2 жыл бұрын
Compared to most of the electronics we use every day, analog synthesizers are stone-age technology. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of finely crafted machines out there, that deserves their price tag because they are built by innovators, in small series. However, the extreme prices on some vintage synthesizers are because they were built long ago. They have since become legendary, and there aren't that many of them left. It is a supply-demand thing. I recently saw a tr 909 advertised on auction, starting on about 7000$. If Behringer can build, advertise and sell an equivalent product for 400$. Well let's go! Yeah, it is a rather distasteful knock-off but they are using 40 years old technology for crying out loud! You can stick to Levi's if you want, but don't get upset when people choose to wear other brands of jeans.

Behringer has always walked the line. These days, of course, they have lawyers, they know exactly what they can and cannot afford, but one has to remember that Behringer started as a guy building cheap copies of good gear in his basement. And personally, I'm torn on Behringer. Their self-developed gear? Great. I love my Neutron. Them offering cheaper alternatives to models released by big name companies? Yeah, also good. I have a Crave, it's okay... Looking forward to the edge. Them trying to muscle in on small innovative synth companies? uhm... maybe not that great? The Beatstep-clone made me uncomfortable, because the original is like 300 bucks and made by a tiny company in france.
@Tiger.Arcade2 жыл бұрын
I felt the same way about the arturia beatstep keyboard. I also agree with them being innovative. In reality, most synth companies are borrowing or sharing ideas for creating new synths. Cloning synths that aren’t made anymore is cool with me too. Patents expire and not everyone has $2,000 for an original. Behringer has always been controversial and that may always keep them in the spotlight. They shouldn’t rip off or take things from smaller companies current products though. That’s messed up, whether it’s legal or not.
@designator74022 жыл бұрын
@@Tiger.Arcade Precisely that. Let them revive the dead, let them rival the living giants, keep them away from the newcomers. The one exception that came to mind since is that of open source. Behringer has a VCO module based on the open source multi-oscillator engine that Arturia uses as well. That is fine. It's non-viral open source, so they're both in their legal and moral right to use that.

I find that there is only one reason why people hate Behringer for only one reason: Money. More specifically, the owners of the original synths OVERPAID for it and are mad that the price of entering the synth/pedal game is significantly lower. They will justify this by either pointing to the low prices (which is not an indicator of quality itself, just look at Gibson), the fact that its made in China (literally everything is, cuz the cost of US labor does not indicate quality and would have been exorbitantly more expensive to produce, not to mention MIUSA does not indicate quality, again look at Gibson), and Behringer's practices as a corporation (which... Don't even get me started on Tesla). These guys who hate on Behringer are mad that they overspent and are looking for a justification. Like literally, do you remember how much making music used to cost? I would be VERY EXCITED if a talented artist was able to make quality music for even a fraction of the price I paid for. It means more talent is coming because the cost of entry is much lower.

Now a real niche market is musical instruments. And even more, electronic musical instruments. It is an actual noble purpose to build musical instruments. Music is the balm for the soul. It brings us together. And what do people do? Hate? We live in a golden era regarding musical instruments. All prices. For everyone. And the remakes are there for those who couldn't get it in the early days. And the collector pieces are also still on the market, for the collectors (or the ones ready to spend big to experience the originals). I'm super excited for this, I know one is a wavetable synth and I need one in my collection to play with, seems like a perfect beginner one! edit: and just to add, I already own a Pro 1, Neutron, Model D, Blue Marvin, Deepmind 12, Wasp, Crave and TD3. They're sick af lol

@@Tiger.Arcade thank you! Yeah man Behringer is absolutely out of control these days, in a good way lol buckle up for this: they're not only working on the oberheim clone, but also officially confirmed JUPITER 8!!! AND YAMAHA CS 80! AAAAHHHHHH lololol oh, and a desktop keyless version of the oberheim, which probably means that for the rest too 🙌 What an incredible time to be a synth enthusiast lol

Thumbs up for acting out the Synth Snob comments. Very funny. 😄 Looking at these mini synths, how about some Stylophone jokes? lol I'm not harping on Uli Behringer, I like what he's doing. I got my Behringer Model D. 🙂👍

I'm excited about these. I have a similar setup with the Modal SKULPT. It has so many different levels to it. The 1st synth I bought, was a Behringer Model D, about 2019. Behringer made it affordable for me to get into analog synths, instead of using soft synths. I now have the K2, and Wasp, and put a mixer extension on the Model D. Chaining them all together is awesome! Think about getting all these Souls Series synths and chaining them all together! I just heard you say there is no Midi In on the JP-4000. I'm sure there will be Mods almost as soon as they come out. There is a Midi Out mod for the Volca series synths from Korg. So hopefully, Midi In won't be a problem.
@Tiger.Arcade2 жыл бұрын
You’re right about the JP-4000. I was wrong in saying no midi. They’re already creating a midi mixer. You could probably also use a splitter on that jack. Thanks for watching! Thursday I’m putting out a video on another mini synth Behringer announced. Probably the one I’m looking forward to the most!

Shade aside, Behringer makes good equipment, I prefer when they run with their own ideas, DM12 and Neutron case in point. Beyond that they make great entry level kit at reasonable price. Won’t get that from Buchla, Moog or Sequential, I own their instruments to. But that top shelf gear really is the bee’s knee’s.
@Tiger.Arcade2 жыл бұрын
And I really think that’s what these can be good for aside from that. I’ll enjoy playing with these with my children and on my own!

@@Tiger.Arcade Exactly! It’s about the experience and possibilities. Behringer figured that out before anyone else. I say good on them👍

I already have Volcas for various uses and anyone of these would be great to add to my affordable rig. In this context I'm more pragmatic. I want access to these sounds in hardware and I have no interest in the cork sniffing nonsense.
@midnightsocean2689 Жыл бұрын
Plugins are what's actually brought affordable synths to the public at large, not hardware clone companies.
@Tiger.Arcade Жыл бұрын
I can see that but I think hardware clones still deserves a spotlight if not second place. As all I ever hear is how it’s made classics affordable to them.

What's all the hype about these announcements? Behringer has always done it this way. And the snobs have always been picking on Behringer, too. In fact, Behringer doesn't make the very best music and musician related stuff, but I have enough Behringer stuff in my home studio to say that this company makes very useful products. And I could never have afforded a lot of the stuff I have in my home studio (digital mixers, rackmount multi-effects units, polysynth) if Behringer didn't offer these devices at such unrivaled prices. And I'm even a "from the West"! Without manufacturers like Behringer, musicians from the so-called "Third World" would have absolutely no chance of getting hold of modern studio and stage technology... To describe Behringer as a lousy price-cutter or a clone hobbyist is not just short-sighted, it's simply arrogant and/or cynical ....

I'd be curious if the JP-4000's usb slot could be used with a splitter. Run a usb keyboard controller and a power cable to the same slot. I've done that with other devices in the past.

You know why people don't like Behringer, they're a huge company who make actual counterfeits of currently available gear from smaller manufacturers that create, do R&D, and all move the industry forward... to the point where the bragged about letting go of their own R&D team. They directly steal from these companies. And they sue people who criticise them. I know you can see, for example, how the Swing is a direct rip-off of the Keystep. Not a clone, a full on copy of something that's currently being manufactured by a company who put in the work to create it. You can see this. I enjoy your videos dude, please don't be that guy who misinterprets this stuff and reads comments in the whiny mocking voice of a schoolyard bully. It's just not a good look. Quick views from trying to stir up drama calling people synth snobs mocking a straw man you set up with childish voices etc will lose you credibility in the long run and only end up hurting your channel. I've seen it happen so many times to channels like yours and it's a shame. Again, I like what i've seen so far from you dude, I'm not trying to be an ass. I want it to keep going and become a channel I look forward to, not yet more of the same old same old. All this considered though, these are surprisingly not an exact copy of anything which is kinda refreshing from the big B. Sure they're volca/monotron/microfreak inspired and aiming for that market, but it's not in Swing/Keystep territory. Sorry for the rambling comment. Keep on truckin. Yyams

I seriously expect to purchase about half of the whole Soul/Spirit range they've teased thus far. Heck, i ended up getting those three Roland AIRA Compacts that came out while we've been waiting on the Behringers, lol. But yeah, we're really fortunate to live in a time when all this wonderful gear is out there. Like littlegee said, we could only dream of being able to have such gear back in the 80's!

Given that this video was made in March 2022 and none of the three synths covered has yet appeared, your expectations would do well to be lowered. Perhaps much of the Behringer range of synths is just a dream.
