Definitely, just clean it back at home and save the plastic waste of 1 ziploc bag on every trip...in fact, i bought a reusable trash bag from a different vendor...and sure, you can reuse ziploc bags, but they are not as quite durable

It's a gimmick, but probably one I'd use. Ziplocks are a pain to wash out I find, that looks much more easy to clean; give it a rinse, whack it in the washing machine. Unless you're packing out used toilet roll. Deffo ziplock that 😂

I bought this backpack. It is water resistant. No it’s not waterproof but the majority of the shell material is water resistant. The roll top combined with the pocket zipper. After watching this review I bought a couple straps to put on the bottom. No biggie. I’ve hiked with it and it breathes better than I expected and found it comfortable. The large side pockets are great. The trash bag actually was handy because I lost my stuff sack for my sleeping bag.

Dan, the purpose of the waterproof zipper, is to protect the zipper itself, from things like mud, dirt, etc. To stop things from getting into the zipper and prevent it from functioning correctly, or at all.

I bought the Shadowlight 60 a year ago and love it. Fixed the squeak in the frame by rubbing wax on the top 3 inches of the frame. Best backpack I have ever used.

Why the water proof zipper: Assuming the pouch is waterproof/water resistant, it gives you a place to put items that are sensitive to water like electronics. Looking at that pouch it looks perfect for a phone, a battery bank and maybe some extra camera batteries for an action cam.

I have a kinda similar trash bag that I made myself. I don't eat out of pouches, so I don't get trash that would start to smell or get gross. I also like to pick up trash I find on the trail, so it's important the trash bag is easily accessible and I hang it on the outside of my backpack.

I got this backpack today. I'm a waist 30in and the medium size works well, lots of room on the strap to further tighten it. Also, the hipbelt is removable. Also, maybe handy for air travel, there's a strap that you can secure the two shoulder straps together, and then place it in a raincover (not provided unfortunately) and check it in for your flight. It looks sturdy, it's comfy to wear (even with 11kg). Can't complain.

Nice review. Years ago I used to read Backpacker magazine, but they were hardly ever critical of the gear they reviewed. I appreciate reviewers who honestly point out the good and bad things about a piece of gear. I find it interesting that you suggested the Outdoor Vitals pack instead of the BA one. One of the things you pointed out as a big negative of the Outdoor Vitals pack was the split front pocket. I would have a really hard time using that pack for that reason. I love the big stretchy mesh front pocket on my ULA Equipment pack. The hip belt size issue on the BA pack seems odd. It almost looks like it may be removable, so I almost expected they would have different hip belt options online. Nope. It's one size. :-(

Great review! Thanks for sharing. I would like you to review a comparable backpack by Osprey, I am particularly interested in their antigravity line. I’ve been into backpack camping since the late 60’s- early 70’s and I still own and use an external frame pack made by Alpenlite. One of the very cool features of my backpack is that it will stand on it’s own on the frame without wetting or soiling the bottom of the bag. My greatest requirement for a good backpack is a robust and comfortable suspension system and that is where I think Osprey excels. I do try to go as lightweight as I can yet I still like to indulge in creature comforts. Let’s face it, if you’re not comfortable, you’re probably not having a lot of fun, and that’s the point, isn’t it?

Love my Exo 58! I think it’s one of the original versions. Been using it for over 6 years in the Sierra, Grand Canyon, and Colorado Rockies. I’ve hauled 50+ pounds and it handles the load no problem. Its sweet spot however is around 35lbs. It’s comfortable, functional, durable, and relatively light weight. It’s hard to switch out to a newer pack when this one still delivers every time I’ve needed it!

Big Agnes has discontinued these and there are some great deals out there (I picked up mine for $130 CAN.) As an overweight guy I haven't found a bag yet that the hip belt actually helps put the weight on the hips (5'10", 275-280LBS WITH A 53" belly and 42" waist.) The stiff sides and wide belt is able to comfortably provide support so that it actually spreads the weight of the pack to my hips, back and chest along with my shoulders. Not a perfect bag (adding my own tiedowns is a bit of a pain) which has made changes to how and what I pack, but it has made the hiking part of camping far more enjoyable. Bigger people looking for a better fit should check them out before they sell out.

Same! Picked up one at MEC today for $140. It's about half the weight of my last pack, and comfortable when I loaded it to 30lb. At that price I won't mind modding it a bit, like replacing or sewing down the belt packs. And the tie downs for poles or an axe will also work for a fly rod. So sure, it didn't work for you, but at this price, for my needs, I don't think I can beat it until that Kakwa falls from the sky.

Looks like a decent pack for someone who is starting out or for someone who carries more than 30lbs. The weird thing with packs is this..... Not all packs work for everyone. What works for my body size/shape and my needs might not work for everyone. It's taken me several packs and 2decades worth of trial and error to find "the perfect" pack for me.

Very good video, as always. Maybe they wanted to make the belt pockets removable because that way you can take the entire pouch with you without having to carry the entire backpack. I think that is an excellent idea for the locations when I want to go to the campfire with all my things pertinent to part crafting without having to empty the entire pouch of my backpack or maybe just to take one thing out of there and having the fear that I’m gonna forget to put it back and then losing it or maybe forgetting where I put it. I don’t know, I just think it’s a good idea. Thank you so much for sharing this video. Please forgive my spelling. The removable hip belt pockets are to stash herbs in Dan, you know that rocky mountain high. 😂 All jokes aside I still am thinking about getting this bag. Having a 36 waist may hopefully alleviate problems you were having with it. I may use the trash bag for trail trash. Maybe attach to the hip belt somehow for easy access. When I first saw the profile of the pack it looked like a Long Haul 50 by Superior Wilderness Designs. You should check them out. Made from ecopak fabrics - waterproof, the large side pockets, sewn in or removable hip belts - sized seperate from torso, material options for front pocket - mesh(two types) or pack fabric, multiple compression and lashing strap locations, built to carry heavy loads, and made by hand in Michigan. They're not cheap and their lead time is getting longer, but well wirth the cost in money and time. I absolutely love mine.

Check where the back panel touces the top of the pack on the inside (maybe a panel in a pocket against your back) for the squeek or a tag at the top of the straps where they atatch to the pack. Had this squeek issue with the Arcteryx Aerios.

I love my OV Shadowlight. The only reason I don't use it on all of my trips is because I've gone to a llghter load and volume much of the time. I've still used it when I take my bear canister or I'm heading out on a trail work crew and want a few more luxury items at the end of the day. I will never part with this pack. One of my favorite features on the OV pack are the two upper side pockets, which I use for my cook kit, first aid kit and poop kit. It rivals the comfort of my ULA packs, but with even better access and organization. If I were to make any suggestions to improve the Shadowlight, I'd suggest adding stretchy shoulder pockets for those of us who carry a smart water bottle up front to help balance loads and for super easy access and a bottom stretchy pocket, like those found on Pa'lante, Atom Packs and Nashville. Big Agnes is a great outdoor company, but whoever designed that pack is not an experienced backpacker. They need to bring in longer distance backpackers and folks with more experience, like yourself, to workshop a well designed pack. After just a few trips, we all know features that are priceless for utility and comfort. Great review. Thanks.

@@deborahhill3105 I remember doing something for a foam mat... like paracord in the belt area and plastic rings on both sides + a toggle. Would have used less cordage/easier if there were more grossgrain loops or rings. If I were to change other things... If they're keeping the midline zipper, don't make it so tall (assuming that the sleeping bag is in polycro on the bottom. Then have some kind of buckle on the top to definitely keep the zipper from opening. Otherwise, a full mesh pocket would be more useful. The side pockets could use drainage holes. The top side pockets could be positioned higher. The top closing V-strap could be longer or have an extension for bear canisters. The hose opening could go away or have a layer of robic over it. The pack foam could have options like GG packs. I forget if the frame integrates w/ the belt, but that's always better when it does. The hip belt pockets could go all the way to the pack.

VERY similar experience with their Impassable 20L day pack; aesthetics are awesome but pack did not vent at all (3 days in Zion), rear stuff sack is tiny and doesn't stretch and the side water bottle pockets invade the interior pack space a lot! love the look and the water bladder functionality but otherwise not so much

Excellent review. The MSRP has since been lowered to $199. I'm staring at a new price of less than a hundred and it's tough not to give it a try for that price. But, a crappy backpack is a crappy backpack at any price. I live in rural area with no way to try on before ordering. I'll probably take a pass, but, it's tempting to give it a try.

The waterproof zipper is for the one water proof pocket. A waterproof phone pocket is common thing in motorbike jackets for example, why not backpacks.

I have been looking at this backpack, and found the hip sizing very weird as well. According to the Big Agnes site the large size only has a minimum hip measurement of 35". I realize it's going over clothing, but I'd be willing to bet a lot of taller people who need the large are in the 32", 33" waist range and won't get a snug fit from the belt.

F-Stoppers invented that style for the back door access for backpacks, made for photographers and videographers. They even sell special padded inserts to use to put photographic gear in the pack for back access that would probably work with the Big Agnes pack too.

I don't think F-Stoppers invented that- I had an Osprey pack in the early- or mid-90's that had a zip-opening backpanel, called the Backside. And if I recall correctly, they had a few packs with that feature. Super handy, especially in snow. I always thought it was strange that the concept didn't stick around.

I think the real issue is just belt sizing. If it isn't going to fit you, then no matter how hard you try, it just isn't going to fit. I can't believe the belt isn't interchangeable since torso length is practically set, between only two different pack sizes. BA could get a lot more versatility by belt simple swapping for perfect fit for greater range of people. I can relate to too big of belt, I had a pack like that I'd had bought on sale once, it never did fit and it was a most miserable experience because of it. Edit update: BA will not sell smaller belts. I think you're right, after using mine, the hard fact realization that torso length determines pack size, the belt size is determined generic human sizing, which not everybody fits into. My revelation moment came when I recognized I could very well be loosing a lot weight on longer trails than when I first started. My pack size too, was purchased in large to fit torso length and the belt fit but was tightened all the way. I have to "hack fit" a length of webbing to replace the buckle system, to tighten the belt correctly so to ride on the top iliac area, in case of weight loss. I'll have to deal with it, if I keep the pack.

Are the removable hip pouches attached with MOLLE webbing? If so the purpose might be to replace with alternative accessories like bear spray holsters and Nalgene holders

I don't believe that it fits the specific geometry of MOLLE, but there are two straps that disconnect. This allows you to remove the pockets and attach accessories, exactly as you hypothesized. I don't own this pack, but I've seen other reviews where people have mounted larger knives, multitools, and even holsters. Whether or not it's a good idea can be debated, but that was the intent -- allow the user to easily mount whatever they wanted on the hip belt.

That back panel is pretty sweet! Good looking pack. Still definitely prefer my REI Flash 55. Can’t beat the value for the price (got mine on sale for $140) and I just love how easily it is to reach my water bottles. It is still relatively light for a framed pack and carries weight very well. 40lbs may be pushing it though. It has removable hip belt pouches too, but they do not move around like the ones on this pack and work perfectly. One last edit… The mesh pouch on the Flash 55 is huge!

MOST WILL NEVER TRY BACK PACK'S LIKE THIS AN THERE MISSING OUT ON SOME VERY STRONG BACK PACK'S.

I met the B/A representative in Pigeon Forge while at REI and he was showing this pack . I’m thinking he said it was geared for AT hikers and when he said how much it weighed I’m like I think so . If you got at REI take it back and get your money back.

I found this video 2 days after I received this pack. Um, yeah, Dan is right on all of it. But might I suggest a pack: the Sierra Designs Flex Capacitor 40-60 liter pack. It's just a better pack and it's beginner friendly.

Ok, Dan, have you researched any of the Deuter Backpacks? Check out the Aircontact pro 65+15 to carry all of your gear. Yes, it's large and slightly heavy but carrying everything you need is something to check out.

The garbage bag would be good in a car with plastic liner. However my food eaten the wrappings in the car ends up in the bag it came in and sold separately. I’m thinking the receipts, it’s also allergy season, and plastic wrappers for candy, etc. just not stiff that smells too much or becomes moldy. That is the only thing that trash bag is good for. I’d probably go for a heavier pack than the outdoor vitals, since I plan on being a weekend warrior to get my feet wet. The big Agnes is a pass, though I may go with their tent if I can afford it

I am sure Dan will never see this but, I am a (former, but until 6 months ago) an REI pack fitter. I have fit thousands of people, and trained hundreds of staff to fit packs. The waist belt being too big is BA playing the odds. Particularly in the U.S. if you are a large - as you said a 22 inch torso which is a large) you DO NOT have a 32 inch waist. So in that sense you are an odd ball. Most people that are large aren’t a 32 inch waist. I would guess the update on this pack will include a a swappable waist belt which a lot of companies offer. Great video.

I own the backpack. Happy with it coming from much heavier Osprey backpacks, but it also has a few head-scratchers. 1.) Tossed the trash bag immediately. The irony of the trash bag being literal trash should not be lost on Big Agnes. 2.) Hip belt buckle design is prone to coming undone. As it slips down it will hit my pants belt buckle (low profile Arcade belt) and unclip. Typically it would pop off when taking big steps up rocks. I was able to remedy by moving my pants belt buckle off-center. Never had this issue with any of my other backpacks. 3.) Wish the mid-section had some fine-tuning adjustment, I think it would help with the slippage. 4.) Top and bottom gear straps would have been awesome. I had to make my own with shock cord and carabiners. 5.) Wish the elastic side pouches had shock cord tensioners around the rim to keep stuff secure when they aren't fully stuffed. 6.) I ordered spare buckle hardware from Big Agnes because I didn't trust the design of the buckles and I've had failures before on the trail. From emailing support to receiving the hardware took a month. All the above being said, I got it for $50 less than the initial MSRP and it was a huge help in my journey moving to lighter and lighter carries so I can enjoy my backpacking trips more.

@@markinaus I took in on a 23 mile and a 50 mile trip. Overall, I'm pleased with it. However, if I could get a full refund for the backpack right now, I would take it and get a Waymark Lite instead. It's been discontinued and you can get it for just over $100 USD, so for that price it's an awesome pack unless you want something lighter or more technical.

Great review there, that pack is not for me, i still swear by the osprey exos 48. This is a fantastic lightweight pack which is stripped back but still has some great features like big side pockets which are accessible at top and also while you wear the pack. Anyway, you do some good honest reviews which is how it should be so 👍👌 from me

used to love my exos 48, until it started squeaking. osprey replaced it under guarantee, but that one started squeaking too after 6 months. As it is no longer sold, they offered me the new talon 44 under guarantee.. which is nice, but not compareable to the exos 48. I now bought the new Gregory Focal 58...which is like a copy of the exos... very nice pack!

By being honest about the good bad and just plain strange, I now trust your reviews even more than I did before. Love that you have Emmett, but you also need a women to review the female version of the same gear. I suggest someone a bit older in their mid 50's and preferably short and a little heavy. Someone with a kiwi accent and those hunting n fishing skills kiwis come with. I can be there in a couple of weeks to join you.....

Good review, and yes, these type of videos are needed for the outdoor industry. They seem to have these small minded people often enough behind their gear designs. Where to start. The design reminds me of the same size pack TNF was making some 12 years ago. Also, a bad design. So, honestly. this is more of a design steal from that pack. As for zippers. a Waterproof Zipper should always lead to a waterproof space. they could have added a waterproof pouch to that location. would have been great for your wallet, maps etc.. I am no fan of any water bladders inside a ruck. they take up needed space inside of a pack. So, that back loading zipper could go. just make it a top loader. Less zippers means less weight, less weak points, and less excess. I like those large outside stretch pockets. and I don't understand why they couldn't have added one to the back panel?? as for that trash pouch. great idea.. for an extra pouch I can use to store other gear inside. The colours aren't that great. Would look cooler in all grey. The waist belt. it not only looks too long, but also too large /wide. I like a long belt. I'n not small waist. But, this one is a bit strange. removable pouch??? dumb. All, in All. it's a fail.
