As we see the DC Fast Charging networks failing, perhaps a PHEV could be a good option to get us through the next few years? This video focuses on how the XM drives in the fully electric drive mode. Hope you enjoy these tests, will be running more PHEVs through it soon!

You are making it sound like all fast chargers are the same. Only the Electrify America chargers are failing due to cost cutting and bad management. Everyone needs to be like Tesla Super charger. Others get bad reviews where Super charger users gives it thumbs up. Even the governments want Tesla to share the charger stations with other EV makers. 😂 Study shows, 75% don't use plug in feature. Americans are too busy and lazy.😂

Less use of all the lithium, nickel, cobalt, etc too and not needing to lug around a 80+kWh battery while leveraging the existing ICE infrastructure, which is what Toyota has been preaching for years in their hybrids... And are just now going full EV models for better or worse.

If you press one of the shift paddles, the combustion engine kicks in, so you can actually get that little bit more power - just do one downshift, release the throttle pedal to about 50-60% simultaneously and then roll onto the throttle again. :)

In the UK a few years now, the government took away all the tax breaks and credits/subsidies because when they interviewed a lot of company car drivers and companies that were given hybrids and saw companies using the cars to reduce their tax and also not installing low-level chargers, while the company car drivers using their fuel card and not ever plugging in the car in 99.98% of the time and use it as a self-charging EV if that.

You should test the Mazda CX60. It’s PHEV. I can charge it in 2 hours. Did have to buy a home charging station to do so. Otherwise it was 9 hours. Can drive 35 with it, but drives really nice in EV mode. Only downside is the suspension. When the road is smooth I don’t have any problems but in all other situations it’s a bumpy ride. Volvo PHEVs are quite annoying on that kickdown switch (full power on cold start), and they don't allow you to see the temperature of anything (the only way is to use the OBD II connected to my phone app). And to prevent the combustion engine from turning on during a slip (wet railway crossings in Boston), you need to turn off ESC (ESC Sports Mode)

That was one of the biggest reasons I got a 2018 Honda Clarity PHEV. It had MUCH more range than any other PHEV. When it was new it could go 47 miles with a 17kwh battery and 6.6kw charger, which was fine because it would only take 2 hours to fully charge it. I wish it had better technology and options like setting a charge percentage limit but overall it's worth it. Other PHEVs only got 25 electric miles or less which was bad. I bought it used in 2021 with 30k miles on it, now it's about 5 years old and 50k miles. It has about 85-90% of it's original capacity, although I don't know how the first owner charged and took care of the battery. I try and charge it to around 70-90% most of the time. I think PHEVs only really make sense if they can got a minimum of 40 miles, because if it's 25 miles, after 5 years the range would be about 15 miles.

My family just took delivery of a 2024 X5 50e, and I can confirm that when the ICE is started for any reason in any mode, it remains on until it reaches operating temperature, which at 80*F ambient temp right now happens rather quickly. Curious to see how it does in the winter. So far, it seems BMW uses the same programming and logic for all their PHEVs, so the XM should be the same.

Kyle-- Thank you for this video. My wife will be in the market for a new vehicle soon(she drives a 2009 Escape hybrid). Given the current state of public charging I just can't recommend an EV. A PHEV seems logical for her given her needs, Looking at the Outlander Hybrid, Kia/Hyundai phevs(Tucson/Sportage phevs), possibly volvo xc60 phev. Wondering how they do in the coffee run challenge? I'd like to maximize EV range and have it "feel" as close to a pure EV as possible. Any thoughts/recommendations?
@nevco8774
@nevco8774 Жыл бұрын
If you have kids and your wife needs to give ride to school and back than the best to me is Chrysler Pacifica PHEV officially just eHybrid: awesome suspension, 32 mile pure EV range as long as it is not too cold, can accelerate to 80 MPH in pure EV mode, on long trips when battery is depleted it yields 33 MPG on regular gasoline, seats are very good, the third row is good enough for adults, has built in 2 screens for second row for entertainment, one large, one smaller sun roof for third row, built in sun shades for second and third row, camera for driver to see what is going on in the back, very decent onboard charger 6.6 kW for PHEVs; except 2017 year model all others are reliable since they use Toyota style double planetary geared electric motors as transmission and tried older V6 which they had time to improve for decades, stow and go third seats and removable second captain chair seats to create a real cargo van to fit 8x4 plywood sheets. Drawbacks: only front wheel drive, no towing, when it is cold and the driver wants hit in the cabin fast always starts the engine to provide heat, no ability to choose EV or hybrid mode- the computer decides. From SUVs Mazda CX90 PHEV is AWD but third row is small and ride is poor on rough road. In fact all PHEV SUVs have a ridiculously small leg room third seat. Most SUVs have no decent MPG when battery is depleted which means most of them use serial hybrids when battery is depleted the most prominent example being Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV while Pacifica uses parallel system like Toyota RAV 4 Prime or Ford Escape PHEV. If you do not care about third row then the latter 2 is the way to go. But if you like automatic transmission shifting even in EV mode then you will be better with a PHEV from Hyundai/Kia lineup. From luxury brands BMW X5 PHEV with 31 miles and Volvo extended range 40 miles of pure EV but BMW has inefficient MPG when battery is depleted while Volvo is just slightly better. Since your wife drives an Escape then Ford Escape PHEV might be the way to go due to the best MPG when battery is depleted, decent price and better availability by comparison with Toyota but does not offer AWD. The ride is smoother then RAW4 Prime as well. If your wife does several times a day trips from home then faster built in charger is a boon: only Toyota RAV 4 Prime in upper trim and Chrysler Pacifica PHEV offer chargers with more than 6 kW capability and that crazy experience BMW from video more than 7 kW. All other PHEVs on the USA market offer only a basic slightly more than 3 kW onboard charger. That is important for several trips a day besides coffee morning run to avoid using gasoline locally. When battery is depleted and PHEV is doing stop and go city traffic except RAV4 Prime and Ford Escape PHEV all other PHEVs have worse MPG than expected even worse than gasoline ICE counterpart like in Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. The latter with BMW X5 PHEV have the best design for mild/moderate off-roading. If are still undecided go to fueleconomy.gov in advanced search select PHEV, wanted model years and body style, then learn dimensions and features by using compare tool at edmunds.com then from the list created both you and your wife have to drive those cars you have chosen.

At $160K I hope it has massaging seats all around and a rear refrigerator for the beer. 😅 (And don’t forget the cinema theatre screen.) Ridiculous price to get from point A to point B. 40+ miles on electric is reasonable, but makes for sense to be 50+. I have a 25 mile one way drive just to visit my kids and grandkids. Why would I want to plug it during the visit? Just seems like a big hassle to have to worry about plugging in all the time. That’s where ICE vehicles have the biggest advantage in range. Has anyone looked at the payback for the extra cost of a hybrid over ICE? What happens in really cold temps (zero F)? I would have concerns about cold start on engine to high RPM, especially when ambient is well below freezing. The paint job is like a mirror. Thanks for the review.

Kyle doesn’t really like PHEV’s but he likes fast powerful cars. The RAV4 Prime is much more efficient and it’s more powerful than this BMW in EV mode when you put the two motors together. It’s not the same size or luxury so if you want more luxury get an NX 450 + and if you want more size get an RX 450h +. My RAV4 is smooth and responsive in EV mode and the gas engine doesn’t come on unless you want it to. If Kyle knew PHEV’s he’d say skip the BWM’s and get a Lexus or Toyota. That’s based on his EV coffee run. Go into hybrid mode and the BMW is way more powerful. I think Toyota and Lexus make mediocre EV’s but they do PHEV’s well. I just can’t wrap my mind around a big inefficient $160,000 PHEV that doesn’t even give you a smooth EV ride.

Single car households in particular, may need this option until infrastructure is sufficiently developed to make EV travel on par with ICE travel regarding dependability and access. I should have bought a PHEV in 2019 when I bought my last ICE. But there were few available in my price range and I didn’t really understand the value of them. Count me in as one of those "renters" who lives in a state that has chosen to adopt California's Advanced Clean Cars II rules, which will phase out the sale of new combustion vehicles by 2035 -- and which has rendered us renters ABSOLUTELY HORRIFIED about the prospect of NOT being able to "charge at home," and thus we will HAVE TO SPEND HOURS charging at public charging stations, if we want to use battery electric vehicles as anything other than parking lot ornaments. The best advice, of course, is "if you can't charge at home, don't buy a battery electric vehicle" -- but try to tell the clueless faceless government bureaucrats THAT. So, WE ARE GOING TO GET SCREWED with a battery electric vehicle future. However, Advanced Clean Cars II has some rather nebulous language that "allows plug-in hybrids," and like Obi-Wan Kenobi, "those are our only hope." But please, Kyle, please help all of the battery electric vehicle owners comprehend what the COMING NIGHTMARE will be, when millions of renters have no other way to charge their mandated battery electric vehicles other than flooding the public charging stations -- and with no other recourse, expect EVERY ONE of these folks to be charging to 100%, every time. How will your battery electric vehicle life be, when EVERY TIME, you have to wait for 20 or 30 or 40 or 50 cars in line, EVERY time you need to use a public charging station? Think in terms of how we will need "Walmart parking lots FULL of chargers at every parking space," or you WILL be waiting in lines like that. That's certainly what I'd like to see in terms of "content in one of your new channels" -- how are we ever going to "scale up" battery electric vehicle infrastructure, if batteries become the one and only means of powering personal vehicles?

This is so full of FUD… Dude, chill. First off, only the sale of new (I repeat, NEW) ICE vehicles will be prohibited in CA. There’s nothing in the law that either prohibits or restricts people from driving whatever they currently drive, ICE included. Nor does the law end, restrict, or prohibit the sale or ownership, or driving of used ICE vehicles. Only NEW vehicles. (Most car sales are used not new.) In other words, the only people who will be affected are those who want to buy a new vehicle, in California. There’s no way that is going to create millions of new EV owners overnight, all fighting for limited charging stations. The infrastructure will continue to grow and become more robust, just as gas stations did over a hundred years ago. Every new technology has growing pains, but they get smoothed out. Relax. So, no, there’s not going to be a tidal wave of new EVs on the road once the law kicks in. No, not the state nor anyone else is going to come take your ICE vehicle away. And no, there are not going to be riots at the charging stations.

It seems to me that BMW has a LONG history of "Yugo quality" gas engines, and now put that pile of rubbish in an EV with all 'the extra things" hey, a bad idea, perhaps?

You are getting soft - that process you are describing just to get moving is ridiculous in the age of getting in a car, push on the brake, and drive. That set of configurations and buttons is the exact opposite of simplicity.
