Environmental scientist here, literally have a degree and work in this field. Texas's energy problems were due to outdated privatized infrastructure mostly related to Natural Gas. Solar is unaffected by temperature. It just so happens that cold temperatures usually come with overcast conditions.

In the mid-2000's, I think late February, we had a massive freeze here in Missouri and power was out for weeks! No gasoline for gas generators and those wanting generators couldn't get them, everyone was sold out. When we got thru that, I immediately bought an automatic generator that runs on natural gas. It kicks on if main power goes out for one minute, then drops off when power comes back on. It has been such a lifesaver! The company techs come once a year to make sure everything is working like it should. I absolutely recommend generators to everyone!
@PhotonHerald3 жыл бұрын
The anode rod is basically a sacrificial piece. If you've ever opened up a water heater, they have rods in there that are used to keep the tank from corroding. Basically anything that would promote corrosion in a metal tank will be attracted to the (usually zinc) rods and corrode THAT first. It isn't a "forever" thing, because the anode rod eventually wears away. But it vastly expands the lifespan of the tank. Same thing with the anode rod for your buried tank.
@sparky88523 жыл бұрын
the anode bag is filled with "sacrificial metal", basically you fill the bag with more easily corroded metal like zinc, that way corrosion will be drawn to attack the zinc instead of the propane tank which are primarily made out of steel.
@GunnerAsch13 жыл бұрын
They do the same thing with boats, most typically saltwater boats. A zinc "anode" is corroded away over time, rather than the expensive bits like outboard, keel, rudder etc. Almost all outboards these days also have 1 or 2 zinc anodes down near the prop, in case you dont lift your outboard.

The anode bag works like a battery so that the stuff in the anode bag rots and not the tank by creating a small voltage difference which in effect tries to plate metal onto the tank rather than allowing its removal. It may be zinc or magnesium. They use them on stuff like oil rigs, Alternatively on large installations they have generators to produce the voltage. What I don't know is how long the bag will work for. Solar works quite well in the snow the panels are thin and dark so they warm up at the slightest hint of sun and the snow slides off them. It helps if you have a steep roof pitch. Not that I would expect you to get a lot of snow in Texas. In the UK we do but our houses have the steeper roof needed for a lot of snow. Looks like you have a good set-up :)

Working on a remodel and addition to our house at the farm right now. Going to be a 6 to 8 months build. We are planning on adding either a 20 KW Cummins air cooled generator Or a 25KW liquid cooled Cummins generator. The great thing about Cummins is for an additional $600 at time of purchase you can extend your warranty on a air cooled unit from five years to 10 years and on a liquid cooled unit from two years to five years. And that’s a top to bottom warranty. It is a great deal. We have Generac generators currently at all of the fire stations that I work at except for station one. Station one has a six cylinder liquid cooled Cummins generator 75KW that is 25 years old and still works perfect. And our city is looking at swapping all generators over to Cummins generators. We have been completely dissatisfied with Generac.

So on the topic of the anode bag, much like an anode rod inside of a water heater, a super simple way to think about it is it's like the kinda like the silica gel pack in your gun box or bag of beef jerky. It's there to attract oxygen (and therefore oxidation) away from something by absorbing it. Whatever alloy is inside of that bag is supposed to soak up as much of the local oxygen by oxidizing faster, and that is supposed to prevent in this case the tank from rusting for longer. There's a lot more to it, but that's the best comparison I could think of lol

Not sure what other loads you have, but for the shop, it looks like the ganerator is much larger than needed. I'm running on a 6KW diesel for emergencies. To save fuel, you may want to get a larger battery bank to charge more capacity. This will reduce the run time needed for the generator as very low loads on a generator consume fuel for very little power generation. Think running your truck for 8 hours to charge your cell phone. Better to run for 1/2 hour to charge the truck battery, then charge the phone off the charged battery.

Definitely way to big and just wasting a bunch of propane, a 17kw generator could power an entire 2,000sqft house including the A/C.

You need a sacrificial anode with almost any buried metal. Sewer and water pipes have them as well. The anode is eaten up by the difference in charges in the ground instead of the other metal.

We use a Kubota Skid Steer on our farm, It has never let us down in the 4 years we've used it. very basic machine but huge pros are the windshield isn't in the way when it's open, controls are all hydraulic so the response time is better and the machine doesn't shut down when bogged down. It's a 75 HP model but I'd go with the bigger 90 if getting another one.

He installed this generator before the storm, obviously when he had the raptor and chief. When he posted the video, it was obviously after the storm. So current day Matt posted the video and in the title he was meaning “I bought this generator before the storm, and it saved us during the storm, and now it’s after the storm and I’m posting this video of me installing it before the storm.” Just to clear the air.

Hey Matt, talking about skid steers me and my dad run a new holland Ls 170 that’s a 52 Hp Diesel. We have about 3.5 acres that we use it on along with our neighbors farm. It’s not a huge machine but it really does the job and is perfect for us. We really love the brand New Holland and we know a ton of other people that run them for construction and farming.
