Phil - You are THE MAN!! I am a carpenter, a painter, and a beginner luthier. I use painter's tape almost daily!! It never crossed my mind to use it like this. GENIOUS!!! I HATE peeling velcro off the back of pedals! This is one of the 983, 416 reasons I will watch every minute of every video you ever make.

I like your idea on painter's tape...really good idea. I will challenge you on the D'Addario kit and the solderless cables. Solderless cables just don't last - specifically if you are moving that board around a lot with gigging, etc. Just say no to solderless cables.
@Russell_Optics2 жыл бұрын
The painters tape & heat gun is a great idea. I have pulled a few stickers off the back of some pedals removing the velcro before. I wish I would have done it this way with the tape. One issue I have with boss pedals is the velcro doesn't stick very well to the rubber backing when moving or removing the pedals.
@tompoynton Жыл бұрын
Pro-tip, remove the base plate of your Boss pedal, reverse it and re-screw it back on. Voila, a flat metal surface to affix your velcro to!

Bonus painter's tape function: you can also use it to reduce the amount of grab from the velcro (just place it over the velcro, but leave a little bit showing). I do this when reorganizing my board or playing around with lots pedals for an afternoon. Once I get a setup I like, I'll pull the painters tape off and fully secure the pedals to the board. Doing this can also save the loop side of the velcro from wear and quite frankly, the modern hook and loop stuff is pretty darn strong and kind of annoying to work with sometimes.

Amazing tip with the painters tape!!! But folks - please, please don’t use solderless cables. I have had to replace so many cables for customers that used them. Ultimately they had to ditch them because of sound issues, bad grounds, not knowing what was actually bad with one or multiple cables, etc. For what it’s worth, just ask Dave Friedman. It’s not expensive to have your own custom patch cables made with far better wire and components. 🤘🏼

Alright Phil, couldn't have posted this like a month ago ;)? First time putting a board together, I watched your old video, but was having a hell of a time adhering my Boss pedals to the board because I couldn't get the Velcro to adhere to the rubber backing. I finally bit the bullet and just pulled off the rubber backing (also ended up removing the labels), because I didn't even think of using the painter's tape! Not that I plan on re-selling the pedals any time soon... Thanks for your videos Phil, your viewers really appreciate them!

Don’t boss pedal bottoms flip over if you unscrew them, revealing a flat side? Love this painters’ tape idea.
@GlennJimenez2 жыл бұрын
Wow I never ever ever thought of that But I think I removed the rubber off of a boss pedal as a teenager. It was a mess and the flat bottom doesn’t stick out farther than the sides so the Velcro doesn’t stick perfectly..

You would think after all of these years and other advancements that everyone would agree to a standard way of mounting pedals to pedalboards. A built in feature at the center of the pedal that lets you bolt it down to a board.

That's a really cool idea for a board. Really allows you to customize it to the exact size you need, which should alleviate a lot of the hassle when building a board. On a related note, have you ever taken a look at the Schmidt Array boards? I just picked up an SA750XDM_wx and I'm pretty confident that it's going to be my main board for the rest of my life. Really awesome feature set.

Anyone watching this video and interested in the solderless patch cable kit. The one used here was like $75 which to me is absurd for what it is. I bought a similar set on Amazon for $35 by Kurrent Electric. Don't know anything about the brand but I do know this....the cables went together in seconds and have not caused any issues. You can buy 2 of those kits for the cost of a single D'addario one

Because the label affects the tone. JOKING!!!! For me, its gives the velcro a much better surface to adhere to if the bottom of the pedal is plastic or rubber (as stated in the video). While not aesthetic, I use very small pieces of painters tape to cover some laser like leds that are found on some pedals.
