Hello Terry, i'm new to the Koi pond experience. I have a water feature that has 1,200 gallons of water. I want to use your filter, the smaller one, to get the pond ready for Koi next spring. The pond does have a skimer but no filtration for fish. Love your system !

Hi Mathew, I make that just under 4500 uk gallon. For that size pond you would need the Pro system. It's the latest design. I run it on my pond and I love it. You'll find it on my website diypondfilters.com Here is a video showing it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGW3aYehh7mLd9E you can contact me on pondfilters@gmail.com Terry.

Wrighty cheers will take a looks. couple of other related questions, I want to come out of the filter into a plant bog before overflow into pond, do you think that would be a problem. also can this be fed from a bottom drain? Oh and I would prob consider putting a large debris whirl chamber before this as we get a lot of leaf drop round here from neighbours, guessing that should get ok, just want to to leave the leaf sludge to be hooked out for the compost
@Wrighty

Running it to a plant bog is not a problem. I run mine from a bottom drain with a 8000 lph dry pond pump. Fitting a vortex barrel first is also easily done. you simply add another tub as the first tub. If I can help further just give me a shout. Terry.

Appreciate the video! You might find a drum filter even more convenient - it’s automatic, cleans water effectively, and handles even small particles that other filters might miss. The maintenance is simple, and the electricity costs are super low - around 50 cents a month. For those looking for efficiency and ease, this is an ideal solution for pond maintenance.

Hi Armando, Good to hear you got the return sorted mate. Did you soak the media for 2 days first? If not it will take a while to settle and become neutrally buoyant. It's because it's new. 50 ltr in a 55 gallon tub should be ok. you can try and take some out so it's moving, and add it back later. You can buy baby koi graduals, you'll find them on eBay. Terry.

Great little filter Terry, Using a smaller air pump was great info. When refitting my pond with your Large filter system I worked out that, 240 watts will cost about £216 a year to run 24/7. Its well worth doing some homework for pump specs etc, you could save quite a bit on a years running cost by checking the full specs of the equipment you buy. All the best Tony

Just trying to figure amount of barrels I need and size pump this would handle for returning back to pond. Thanks!

Hi Chaz, The Midi system is only good to 4000 gallon ponds. You would need my Pro system for that amount of water. You would also need a pump around 1700 gph. 2 inch pipe would not be big enough for that flow. Have a look at my Pro system, that will cope with up to 10000 gallon ponds. thanks so much for all your videos. we have our system up, but a few little barriers, have not completed the waterfall and landscaping, so pictures will come later. We did use the 2" pipe working fairly well. Used 2 filter cages in each barrel for additional flow. so glad you noted on this video how much media, because I didn't think I had enough, and I was right! Ordering more today. We are having little issue on the 1st tank and is not allowing us to open the valve from the pump 100%. Tank 1 is filling up faster than 2 and 3. any suggestions. I had tried to use some of the larger media on tank 1, that sinks since we have not completed the pipe connections from the bottom drain (we think that might be the issue) Im going to pull it today and see if that makes a difference. We also set the filter cages so we can turn them to help adjust the water flow as well, that also helped.

What kind of air stone did you use in your moving bed with the 1.6L/min air pump?
@Wrighty
@Wrighty 3 жыл бұрын
I used a 12 air bar, but you can use a 5" round air stone. To use the smaller air pump, you will need a good flow through the filter, as the 90 elbow inflow is pointing upwards it helps to move the media. Terry.
@PTranProductions

@@Wrighty Thanks Terry! Yes, I am using a 5” round air stone with a 4W 6.8L/min pump. Hopefully this will be strong enough. I did try out the 1.6L/min pump but it was not strong enough for the 5” stone. As my first trial of my build, K1 media just float on the surface without any moving action. Should I soak the K1 in Potassium Permanganate to speed up the maturity or should I just wait?
@Wrighty
@Wrighty 3 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, it will become mature in a few days. It won't circulate until it is mature. I wouldn't PP it mate, or it could be quite a while before bacteria start to mature. Just keep giving it a good stir with your hand now and again. Terry.

Hi Ian, I have mine running from a 4" (100mm) bottom drain, and reduced to 3" (89mm) to the filter house. I then drop it where it comes out of the ground to 2" (50mm) to the pump. I do this as I think water flows that bit quicker through 3" pipe and less dust settles in the pipe. You can keep it 4" if you wish. A lot will depend on your pond size and the ammount of water flow you'll need through the system as the Midi is on 50mm pipework. If I can help further, just give me a shout on pondfilters@gmail.com Terry.

It does sound like the sun is producing algae bloom but the UV is not controlling it. When was the last time you changed the bulb in the UV as it does need changing every year. Algae bloom as you will know is caused by the sun and usually green, but as it's only 3 microns in size, its too small for any filter to remove. A UV changes it's DNA so it not only dies but sticks it together making it large enough for a filter to remove. It does sound like the UV is not doing the full job. Hope this helps. Terry.

Ive been doing a lot of research with regards to aeration in the pond. I have noticed on your barrels the lids close relatively tight with no opportunity for the barrels to have air exchange at the top. I have seen this with others videos who use the same type of filtration that you do and their lids also close with no air exchange at the top. It seems to me that your system would greatly benefit with some type of air moving freely at the top, while still keeping critters out. What are your thoughts on this?
@Wrighty
@Wrighty 9 жыл бұрын
+Ron Szegleti Hi Ron, Aeration on the moving bed is not hindered by the lid as the excess air is drawn out with the water to the pond return. I don't see that removing the lid will make any significant improvement to the air supply to the water as the space above the water is getting fresh air from the pump all the time. Thanks for your question. Terry.

Hi Chris, Thank you for your kind comments. They all work well mate. But don't forget this Midi filter is on 2" (50mm) pipework, so your not going to get the same flow through the filter as the Pro Mk2 filter which is on 3" (89mm) pipe. It depends on your pond volume as to what filter you need and also the pump size. I wouldn't go any bigger on a submersible pond pump of around 10,000 lph. Any more than that and the water won't be spending enough time in the filter. Thanks Terry.
