I honestly disagree, I think that The One Piece is the PREFECT time to recast. Obvs the voices should have the same feel/vibe (Luffy needs to be high spirited, Chopper needs to be cute, etc) but the OG VAs are all well into their 50s or 60s or beyond, and they're being kept busy with the original show and all the other stuff they do outside of OP. Giving the new viewers who will undoubtedly hop on the bandwagon with this remake their own set of voices to grow up on and grow attached to is paramount. For the English dub ig that the Live Action cast could do the dubs that probably makes sense since NF already has them contracted, but I think we should embrace some new up and coming talent in the VA world, rather than go with the safe bet

romance dawn - 4 episodes orange town 3 episodes syrup village - 4episodes baratie - 7 episodes episodes arlong park - 10-episodes loguetown - 2 epispodes a tight 30 episode schedule but i think this is roughly what the pacing will look like in the new series. 3-5 chapters an episode, 100 chapters for the totality of east blue works out to roughly 26 episodes, ill give an extra 4 episodes for the sake of super iconic moments (zoro v mihawk, backstories, etc) and random shit (gaimon, buggy's cover story, koby and helmeppos cover story if they decide to show that early) not sure why more people arent gassed abt this remake, i have really high hopes

As someone who's not black and not part of the community, I gotta ask: is all of the love for Arlong's live action portrayal sincere? I can never tell! A lot of the time it seems pretty joke-y and meme-y, but other times it seems genuine. And a few times I saw black folks critique it, or have a mixed love-hate relationship with it. I hope I'm not totally out of turn asking this, I just really can't tell what the feeling around that actually is. I'm sure it varies person-to-person in the black OP community, but I can't tell if the enthusiastic response I've generally been seeing is serious or not. Thank you in advance!!

You split the episodes into 2 half’s of five episodes. Releasing 2nd half a few weeks apart from the first. You begin the series introducing the entire crew. End the half with Zoro battling Mihawk. Next confront Smoker, survive the execution, and lastly announce straw-hats dreams among the stormy waves entering the Grand Line. This structure creates the suspense the epilogue needed. Allows the real season 1 to begin on the Grand Line.

The one thing that worries me about the anime remake is that Mayumi Tanaka has said long ago that once One Piece ends she's going to retire. They can't be expecting her to still be playing Luffy in her 90s. I mean, Masako Nozawa does it for Goku but she also says she's going to retire. In another hundred years. They'll be prying the mic out of her cold dead hands. Probably literally. In any case, I just don't know about a different VA for Luffy. Then again, I never expected Inaki Godoy to nail it either, but now I can't imagine anyone doing it better, so maybe I'm just being too spooked by change.

The issue with the action outside of a Zoro is it will be hard to choreograph Luffy’s fighting style. He’s so quick and erratic he’s like a hummingbird, dudes got the lightest feet in the game, that’s gonna be hard to translate. The Witcher has excellent action but it’s a swords dance all the same, Geralt’s blade just feels heavier.

I'm gonna be honest, for Zoro specifically, I think the action is significantly better than in the anime most of the time. I've said it before elsewhere, but Oda generally doesn't know how to do sword choreography most of the time. The anime compensates by doing DBZ-style barrage of repetitive sword strikes. Then it ends with Zoro doing some slow-mo showy sword thing by himself, before the finale of the enemy having already been sliced without us seeing it. It's super boring to me most of the time. Especially when so much of Zoro's character is "badass sword combatant." (Yeah yeah yeah I know he's loyal and does generic trash talk. I genuinely love the getting lost gag though, and the times he acts like a vice-captain.) In contrast, I actually like a lot of Luffy's fight choreography in the manga! That makes the change in the live action look especially jarring though. We miss Luffy's awesome choreography, and Zoro's gets improved for the most part. Here's hoping Studio WIT does better!! I have high hopes!

Sanji is literally one of the most tragic characters written in One Piece and people after Whole Cake island still only viewing him as a pervert is really a disappointment to me. He is a whole lot of self -loathing and self - sacrificing bundled up into a goofy lady loving cook who picked up cooking to show love and be useful because he thinks its the only value he provides. I mean, Sanji and Zoro had some banging choereography in the Toei anime at the end of their Wano fights and that was all added to it, it was just too short because weekly anime unfortunately. Pacing is the biggest enemy, even Gear 5 luffy vs kaido that one scene where they were going crazy with the lightning looked great till it went back to the usual standing still clash show.

Also I already told you zoro was doing flips and shit when king was starting to fight mask off, there's a reason its one of the highest rated episodes, even that gear 5 vs kaido segment where there was constant movement and the clashes were shortened got rated highly for it. But I agree with you that clashes need to be minimalised. Sanji has less struggle overall to have good choreography, only problem with Sanji fights is most of his opponents being goofy/unserious a lot of the time compared to Zoro's.

Luffy vs Usopp is a bad example because that is exactly the one fight where context and storytelling matters the most. It was already obvious who'll win so more focus was on the characters drama and the sadness of the whole situation. If anything, goofy fights that are meant to be taken seriously like Sanji vs that Ramen guy and Zoro vs Giraffe Kaku are the ones that need a heavy facelift.

The only people I've heard be critical of the live action are people who are manga/anime fans. And those critiques are usually either a) comparisons and not critiques at all or b) criticizing things that are just live action things, like that fights seem choreographed, because they are. They're never going to be able to do anime action. But, fights aren't nearly as important to most people as they are to anime fans. People are drawn to the stories, that's why OPLA broke through, those stories touch your heart and stuff. The action is complementary to most people, whereas for a lot of anime fans, that's what it's all about. But this is an adaptation, it's for people who don't gravitate to anime. I know people who skim fights. In the anime community its easy to overestimate how much people care about action scenes.
