I highly recommend dynasty warriors advance on GBA. if you go to "challenge" mode you can do "time attack" which is where you see how fast you can can kill 100 enemies, this is perfect for quick play sessions and the other modes are fun too! mario pinball and pokemon pinball are both great GBA games for quick pick up and play. Also I love tetris worlds for the GBA also for quick play sessions, it too has other modes than just standard marathon and you can customize the theme and music in the options, the game wont save the adjustments you make for the music and theme but since you have save states you can create a save state with your favorite theme and music already selected. great review I look forward to more!

Also my top handheld right now is the Retroid Pocket 5 but I do agree the Android devices take a lot more tinkering to get them going. The smaller linux devices are so much easier to configure even with custom OS since many you just flash a sd card, load roms and you're good to go since they are so tailored at this point.

As an owner of a brick, it gets hot as hell... not sure why all reviewers don't talk about this. It's very much part of the design as trimui decided to use a metal plated back.
@Isaac-OS8 күн бұрын
I discussed this towards the end in the dealbreakers section! I noticed mine does get warm too but it never made me uncomfortable. I guess it would depend on length of gaming session you go for.

I haven’t experienced it getting hot but I don’t play it for a long time just a 1/2 hour at most just to pass time while at work or just waiting in line at the store.

Does it get hot playing 16-bit games? Or just playing PS1 games? My RG405M gets hot when playing PS1 games, but it's okay for 16-bit games.

I have a Smart Pro, and can attest that this hardware is fantastic. I just use CrossmixOS on mine; the modified stock firmware is a bit ugly, but more full-featured than something like MinUI, with very good support for DS games and *decent* compatibility with N64, Dreamcast, and PSP content. Plus PC games as a bonus. Playing Celeste, UFO 50, and Half Life on this thing is a blast (though the Smart Pro has dual joysticks; Half Life might not be very fun on the Brick, lol).
@Isaac-OS5 күн бұрын
lot of good things ive heard about the smart pro -- glad you're getting some good use out of it!!

Oh, yeah, I'm loving it. It's not my first emulation handheld, but I'm not deep into the hobby; mostly used hacked consoles like PSP and 3DS with emulators on them, though I did buy an nVidia Shield Portable when it was new, and a Steam Deck a couple of years ago. The Smart Pro is my "stick it in a pocket and take it to work or on commute" device though. A wonderful upgrade from my New 2DS XL, which was fully loaded with emulators but struggled to run N64 games well.

If hand size fitting is an issue, they have a variety of grip options (including a case grip) on Etsy.
@Isaac-OS9 күн бұрын
Ohhh that’s a good point. But the only issue is I wonder how that would affect portability. I wonder how big those grips get when it’s placed on the device?
@clearelement10519 күн бұрын
The case grip they have is pretty good for portability and keeping it safe. The others are pretty much an at home accommodation if you want to play on the couch or bed. If you want to take both somewhere it's better to have it in a backpack or suitcase for travel.

Apotris (or any other version of Tetris) is great for on the go. I like Apotris for its “Dig” mode where you have to clear junk lines. Pretty easy to beat a 10 line Dig in 3 minutes or less. The Sonic Advance games have pretty quick levels. Donkey Kong ‘94 is probably good for this too. Strategy RPGs (FFTA, Advance Wars, Fire Emblem) are also good fits. I usually look for GBA games for that quick-burst playstyle since they were originally designed for handhelds. Jealous of you playing aLttP for the first time. Although I’m certainly old enough to have played it back-in-the-day, the first time I actually sat down to play it was 2017 on the SNES Classic. Super enjoyable experience, ended up 100%ing

I addressed that towards the end! The metal plate does get warm, nothing that has made me uncomfortable though. However if you’re a bit more sensitive to heat or don’t want ur device to get warm then this is definitely an “issue” I’d say. It does in fact get warm but like I said it’s not made me uncomfortable or created any problems for me really!

I'm kind of the opposite of you. I never really saw the point to buying a larger retro handheld. If I was going to go big enough to not fit in my pocket then I might as well go all out and get a steam deck, which I did. Why spend 150 to $200 on a no name Chinese company retro handheld, when I could just get a steam deck and basically play everything. With retro handhelds, I'm looking for something small and cheap. I want something that I can take with me everywhere I want it to be small and fit in my pocket.
@Isaac-OS5 күн бұрын
This device definitely made me understand this perspective. I mainly liked those $200 devices just because I thought they were really interesting and WAY smaller than a steam deck!

i love the rg35xxsp. I think this is also a fantastic pocketable device, its a good middle ground between the 40xxv and the trimui brick. i think the 40xxv would be a bit too bulky to fit in the pocket, meanwhile the SP will fit still pretty nicely. Although the SP can get slightly bulky in the pocket as its not as small as the brick. All devices mentioned would work well it just depends on the form factor and size youre really after!

The BIGGEST selling point for me, by far is the screen. Compare to the Miyoo Mini / Plus, RG35XX line (which I have several) or any other sub £100 devices, the screen beats them all. The PPI is just much higher than all the others. I think you gloss over that to quickly. The screen is only 2nd to the OLED to my RP5. It’s even better than the Retroid Pocket Flip which was £160.
