In about 2010, my agency received a bunch of Colt M16 SP1’s that were issued to us (troopers). We could only shoot 55 grain ammo because of the barrel twist rate (which I think was 12:1). They had the three prong flash hiders, no forward assist, and carry handle. What I liked most about them was the greenish gray finish. They were extremely accurate and we shot about 2000+ rounds without cleaning them that week without malfunctioning. Excellent rifles and I wish I could’ve bought mine when I retired…technically they were still property of the US Government.
@JD-tn5lz11 ай бұрын
My agency had the old A1s also. Btw, it's 1 in 12, not 12 to 1. They were accurate enough, but it was much easier to mount optics on the carbines as well as secure the carbines in the vehicles. The old A1s were just too tall for an Explorer and specially for the Taurus. Just fine with Expeditions and Vics.

Back in 1989, we had M-16 A1s at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO when I was in Basic. The finish was almost all stripped off due to excessive cleaning enforced by Dril Sergeants. The rifles qwere really loose. The rifle I uses had the triangle grips. We had the claning kit compartment as well. The A-1s we had at my Guard unit had the cleaning kit compartment in the stock. I like the A-1 sights much better than the A-2 sights. Who really needs the elevation knob under the Widage knob. Elevation was just adjusted on the ront sight on the A-1. We were good out to 350yds with the A-1.
@KevinJames-yg9eu11 ай бұрын
The knob under the rear sight is range, not elevation. The front sight is used for zeroing elevation on any M16 or M4. The range knob is to compensate for distance to the target after the sights have been zeroed, which may be overly-complicated for a combat rifle, depending on who you ask.
@JD-tn5lz11 ай бұрын
On A1 the rear was strictly windage and front was strictly elevation, except for the "L" flip. We (USMC infantry) never used either after zeroing and quals. They were there and ignored. No issue with them being on the rifles. We didn't even mess with the flip-up "L." We loved the A2 sights, though we ignored their adjustments also. Just having them and knowing that we had a rifle that we could take to 800 if we had to was a real morale boost. Reference this A1 knockoff, whatever. I didn't know anyone back in the Fleet who missed the A1 after we got the A2. We missed the full-auto, but we absolutely loved the greater accuracy of the A2 at distance and when you held an A2, you knew you had a weapon...not so much with an A1. @@KevinJames-yg9eu

I carried an M16A1 in the US Army of the 1980s. Although I was never in combat, I found it to be rugged and reliable during field training and qualifications; mine never jammed on me at all. I too enjoy the retro style, and Windham Weaponry came up with the perfect combination for me in their “Government Model A1” version. As a lefty I need at least the A2 style brass deflector, and the Windham is basically a semiautomatic-only A1 except for that, the A2 stock (which I prefer as a bit sturdier), the A2 front sight, and the A2 profile barrel with the 1:7” twist, plus the M4 feed ramp. It has the A1 receiver (except for the feed ramp and the brass deflector), A1 rear sight, A1 forward assist, A1 hand guards, A1 pistol grip, and A1 flash hider. To me it has the classy old school look and feel but with more modern performance features. They can be had brand new for under a grand, and they are extremely well made; with my Brownells “Retro” 4X carry handle optic it is an absolute tack driver. Another option out there for us retro AR fans; it is my lone AR and I have no desire for any other.

@@ethan5.56 I'm pretty sure it has a lot to do with the low mass bolt. I ran the sand bolt in right with a rifle length buffer and used a 308 flat wire spring the compensate. Unfortunately I can't use the same spring in the KP-15.

How was it zeroing? I've seen a few vids etc. of owners complaining about canted FSBs and the aperture having to be way over to one side or the other. I guess it just the luck of the draw, I'd hope PSA would correct this for you with no issues. I' d really like an A1 20" or a 653.

That's what I carried in basic and ait. Funny thing when I was in the 25th id in the 80s there was a gun shop outside post. I bought a colt ar15 sporter 2, Looked like a a2 back when you could get thatbstuff there. I kept in the arms room. When I would pull it out on weekends to go to the rod and gun club. Guys in c quad would ask ohh cool were getting our new a2 rifles? Nope! We still had the a1s in 2nd bde at the time. But we did get them shortly there after. I also had the Phoebus/buck (the make that was available at the time), m9 bayonet I bought around the same time while we still had the m7 bayonets in the arms room. Fun story, and cool memories, from the electric strawberry.

Fort Knox August 1970. My first day at the range, my H&R M16A1 broke. I don't mean it malfunctioned, it BROKE and had to repaired by the armorer located behind the bleachers. The fact an armorer was at the range spoke volumes for me. I never trusted M16A1s for the rest of my time in the army.

Six months ago, bought a used Wyndham Weaponry AA-15A1, aka, a copy of the M-16A1. The only difference is that it has the A2 version of the heavyweight barrel with 1/7 twist so it can use the more modern rounds. Otherwise, it’s a M-16A1 through and through. Never fire it once….For me, it’s an “historical piece” show and tell. If I need my 5.56 fix, I have my Daniel Defense DD MK12, DDM4V9 and my FN Military Grade M-16A4 for that.

Last year that the MN Gun Owners Caucus Rally at the MN State Capitol Rotunda I met a guy who had worked for H&R and he was telling me about how PSA had bought their parts and were going to make the semi auto version of it. I'm jazzed as the only rifle I've ever shot was the M16A1 in the late 1980s. I love the triangular grips which make one cradle the bottom of the barrel rather than like now where guys will put their thumb over the top of the barrel which looks tiresome. There was a trick on using the sling to steady your shots while standing or in an unsupported position that they probably don't teach anymore either. It's simple and the cleaning of it is a snap. I've seen the Hellion bullpup and that looks like a nightmare to clean plus all the possible places something could snag on the rifle. I doubt it happens but having a CMP for the full auto version would be great. Thanks.

Colt & FN were the only manufacturers of the M16A2. An H&R A2 would have had to have been a conversion of an M16A1with the FULL auto setting obliterated and rebranded BURST.

I was in the US Coast Guard from 1980 - 1988. Then I joined the PA National Guard while going to Penn State. We had the M16A1s and the Colt 1911A1s. The Guard Units were not 'Upgraded' with the M16A2s. And of course we had the M60s in both During qualifying every 6 months in the CG our Gunners Mates allowed us to fire Full Automatic at close ranges. It was a lot more accurate using short bursts than most people realize. I still have an original SP1 and CAR-15 SP1. Both slick sides. Bought a Troy XM-177E2, reallly cool. The CAR-15 is still a great CQB weapon.
