Hello, and welcome back to another train trip report on my channel.
In this video I will be travelling on-board the NEW interior of Avanti West Coast, on a Class 390 'Pendolino', from London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly.
I am trying out the new interior of Standard Class, which has had a large overhaul, which is even claimed to be the UK's biggest ever train upgrade.

Lovely refurbished trains are very nice, doesn’t make up for what has gone from one of the best services on the railways to what probably the worst. Very difficult to plan train journeys from Cumbria. Sincerely hope they send Avanti packing.

They've also put the same bad seats on the class 197s for TfW, when they should've chosen trains with a more intercity style interior, like on the 158s and 175s and put in more than one toilet

British train interiors are always hamstrung by the restrictive loading gauge (Eurostar excepted, and eventually HS2) which means they are always a bit cramped (it's amazing what an extra 10-20cm of interior width can do). So we do have to temper our expectations.

Britains Rail netork is one of the oldest in the world and so obviously are the standards which where set. Definitely not a great descicion for the future in hindsight but there isn't a lot you could do if you did not want to spend a fortune.

Regarding large towns/cities with small stations, Wakefield has a population of 330k (over 550k for the postcode area) and it's main station, Westgate, only has 2 platforms

About the towns with small stations, Kenilworth has about 22k (as of 2021) people and only re opened in 2016 from its 1965 closure with a single platform

Oh the days when we as kids had to run down the platform to get a compartment on the corridor trains out of Euston travelling to Liverpool to get the ferry back to Ireland sometimes even as far as Stranraer but at least in those days there was a line from Dumfries to Stranraer, yep I’m that old and they were steam pulled trains,

Great video! :D Seems odd that they didn't update the vestibule area and the signage in a few bits, just makes it look like a weird mishmash rather than a totally new train which other refurbs manage to do. But equally, an upgrade is still welcomed and it looks like it will feel much less cramped and dingy compared to the usual 390 experience...

Class 390 took me from Wolverhampton to London Euston, and Wolverhampton to Liverpool. I rate them 9.5 out of ten. my Mums friend is a manager there and their service is amazing.

@@stephensmith799 claustrophobia on voyagers are the same as they need: Gutting Better seat arrangements One extra carriage Less cramped legroom. New window alignment Redesign of luggage storage If those things I mentioned above don't happen then scrap voyagers and replace them with IETs which are Avanti West Coast are replacing the voyagers with 805s and 807s. As I mentioned IETs they are the worst intercity train and have uncomfortable seating loose panels inside every carriage and shoddy interiors. HSTs and 91s are better than IETs and have much more comfortable seating.

@@maimadha The Pendolinos used to go about with panels rattling but they seem to have sorted that out now. Do carriage designers even talk to passengers? Or for that matter, to train crew? I get the fact that there are structural integrity issues that they have to start with, but, hey, the crash resistance of BR mk2 Fs (lovely stock in original configuration) was pretty damn good…

Detest Euston. Travelled out of there many times when I worked on the buses, 84 to 86 and lived in Coventry at the time. Tragic what we have lost architecturally especially Brum New St pre 1962. Imagine St Pancras being demolished and replaced by a concrete monolith like this.

There are a few very large places with rather small stations, for instance Telford, which has an estimated population of around 200,000 in 2022, has only two platforms at the central station, with Middlesbrough and Poole, both with estimated populations of 150-160,000 have stations of a similar situation.

@@Cpr1234 Yeah Wellington has three, although Platform 3 isn’t used often or at all since the Walsall service was withdrawn in December 2019. I know the area very well too, I used to use Wellington station a lot. Telford could really do with a lot more frequent services considering the size of it

@@MaidaValeTom True. Sometimes P3 is used by the occasional engineering or light loco move, or on rare occasions a terminating service should the line be blocked on the way towards Shrewsbury. But yeah you're right, the third platform is rarely used in general.

@@Cpr1234 Yeah the last time I saw it in use was an engineering train about a year ago, and the last time I saw it used by a passenger service was when the 2020 floods happened in Shrewsbury and the lines were blocked. Great video. I really like the new refurbs apart from those white side head rests/head rest wings in standard. They do not look very hygienic and also, if someone with a not so clean head/head of hair has been using them, it could be a bit smelly for the next passenger. Me and my other half are due to travel down to London in 7 weeks time, it will be interesting to see if we will be travelling on one of the newly refurbed trains, time will tell.

Nice video. What on earth were they thinking installing white headrests?!! Always found the Pendolino interiors to be cramped, but the soft lighting is so much better than the LNER Azuma dental/operating surgery bright white migraine inducing setup which makes the horrendously austere interiors look even more austere! Can't bear travelling on the Azumas.

Good video as usual. 1) Aren't the ticket machines tested by a user panel selected for the lack of IT skills? 2) They are marginally less unpleasant than the Hitachi stock but pigs' ears and silk purses is the phrase that comes to mindful. They have been in service long enough. The best continued use for them would be for an express parcels service, with roller shutter doors fitted. The class 350 have a more pleasant, airy and spacious ambience. 3) What does tilting do to the track? 4) Did they get rid of the smell of drains?

Great video - informative and fun to watch. Euston is a really ugly station - especially if you google how it used to look or compare it to St Pancras (for example). It was built at the same time, and with the same priorites as Penn Station in New York - which is known as the ugliest station there. Little thought taken for the needs of the people who actually use it.

I note that Standard was fairly packed whereas First was running empty! Has this something to do with pricing? Perhaps all operators should consider charging a fairly modest premium for use of the first class carriage irrespective of journey length and charging extra for a meal service?

12:22 Bit off topic to this video but I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels Stoke Station is rather small as a primary railway station for an urban area of its size (smaller than the nearby stations of Kidsgrove and Stafford) despite having nice architecture. Just a shame there's no major plan to expand it, a perfect evidence of the lack of ambition & foresight on the Transport Planners here - could easily expand it across the former Goods Yard space with at least two more through platforms and a southbound terminating platform (might be more challenging though with the Goods Yard Development taking place in part of that space now), freeing up some capacity in the Stoke branch of the West Coast Main Line (when I studied in the College & University adjacent to it, I did sometimes see some trains queuing up for the platforms) and possibly allowing more local/long distance services in the area from Stoke. But anyway, nice video & review regardless.

Always loved the new Euston and I’ll miss it when it’s gone. In terms of beautiful British design I associate Euston, The QE2, Concorde, the BR mark 2D and mark 2E carriages and the Festival Hall. But oh dear, I notice that there are still seats with NO view through a window!!!! Not a bad ticket price

Well filmed journey. Its a smashing refurb for a great train 😎👍🏽 If I was travelling between London and Glasgow/Edinburgh now it would be the pendolino every time over LNER’s Azuma (Hitachi AT300) - those Hitachi trains are very uncomfortable for journeys longer than an hour, even in 1st class 😟

Took the EUS to MAN, and return, Avanti service in the second week of April. Having done the same trip, some years ago, when it was Virgin operated, I was very disappointed with the level of service. They wouldn't let me in to the EUS firs class lounge until an hour before departure. I didn't see any such restriction when I booked the ticket, I have no doubt it's on the Avanti website somewhere it just wasn't obvious. That's fine for local passengers who know but I'd travelled on the non-stop flight from Australia and tubed it to Kings Cross before going to Euston. To say I was shagged after the flight would be an understatement. There are other factors involved but they don't need to be discussed here. All I wanted was to sit down in peace and quiet to start recovering. When they finally let me in I discovered they'd removed the self-serve, an attendant had to serve you. Job creation or stopping people from over-indulging? On the train they ran out of beer, the food was worse than airline food in the 70s and the service less than stellar. What happened to the set table, the cloth napkins and the prompt service? Coming back was no better and to compound the issue the Avanti First Class Lounge was closed, I did see, what appeared to be, Avanti staff entering and leaving but it didn't open while I was there. Let's hope Avanti has upgraded more than the decor of the carriages.

Oof, unpopular opinion there about Euston. In my opinion it's the least attractive terminus in London. St Pancras is my favourite. Hopefully the rebuild of Euston for HS2 will help improve its appearance.

I do like what Avanti West Coast have refurbished the Class 390 Pendolinos. With new seats, lights, interiors, WiFi and plug sockets. And also they ordered new Class 805 and Class 807 AT300 rolling stocks from Hitachi that isn’t to replace the Class 390 but is to replace the Class 221 Voyagers and are to enter service from next year.

So A: I'm in a very large electric wheelchair. B: I love pricks who put their luggage in my space. They have their seat allocation I have mine and I don't share. So I park my chair on top of their luggage, trying to damage it, but inevitably I block it in and if they want it out I tell them sorry mate, I'm not moving till my station comes up. This usually then involves the conductor, he first queries them and their inability to read signs, then he begs me to release the offending articles. All this time the train is stopped, the police are usually called, and eventually I give in. Now the conductor knows me, see's me coming and dumps their junk from my space, this includes strollers with kids in them. Strollers are not wheelchairs. So I have made a name for myself in our regional community, if traveling by train, stay away from the disabled area. If there is to much luggage, the conductor calls a maxi taxi, this is a taxi usually a big ass Toyota van with a hoist, it takes me to the door of my destination at the railways companies expense. But conductors are more on their toes, they know when I travel and they dress down idiot passengers that can't read the big wheelchair on the floor.

Found the seats really uncomfortable, typical ‘save space’ seating in refurbished carriages we see everywhere, but like sitting on chipboard for 90 mins. The tables are already showing signs of wear. Poor experience overall. The Pendalinos needed a refresh, but this is a backward step for me as a passenger

More of a refresh than a refurb. Those reservation screens are very dated now and should have been replaced with something closer to the red/green lights on the ECML stock. Blue lighting is also not new. And the tasty meal service is better described as a light snack and nowhere near worth the price you pay for 1st class.

Definitely the worst terminus in London. It's dark with no seating and then those horrid ramps to the platforms. It has zero impact or sense of style about it.

They were bumpy, noisy and the toilets were a literal hole in the floor, I much prefer trains nowadays (I'm 72)

Not much seems to have changed. I found the Standard Class least comfortable as any long distance train. They were claustrophobic, cramped and badly ventilated. For going from Birmingham to London give me London Northwestern or Chiltern even if they take a bit longer. Your video doesn’t give me any confidence that things have improved!

@@andrewstorm8240 to be honest, if you're on any high-speed train and travelling quite a while on them, you always become tired after getting off. Happens all the time to me when I go on any high speed train
