You probably didn't realize but the kill at 1:58 was actually the aim 54 that got him (at least it seems that way), the contrail of the aim-7f (the one on top) disappears before reaching its target and its probably slowly gliding into the mig 23 and then the aim 54 came from underneath and gets the kill, i re-watched that part a few times and that's what it looks like

Honestly the phoenix is incredible when it goes after someone above it. It just climbs like hell and kills them, even when they try to dive, it’s already correcting towards them. That’s where I have had my success with the Aim-54.

This update the Mirage F1 got basically a complete weapon and fm overhaul and it feels like a completely different plane now. The Magic buff to 35G, Super 530 buff where it doesn't die instantly to chaff, engine thrust increase, drag decrease, weight decrease etc. It's not the best but its actually fun to use.

F-14A isn’t so OP that nothing else can compete. It just makes the already bad top-tier jets worse, and the mediocre ones into bad ones. Things like the JA37, J35, and MiG-23MLD can still put up a fight. In the case of the JA37, in a dogfight, it’s about even and the 37 can usually come out on top if the F-14 pilot isn’t especially good at dogfighting. It’s a similar case with the Cfir, however it does appear to be slightly worse than the JA37, so F-14s can easily take them out, but they’ll have to work for it.

So some info Fuel isn’t bugged, she’s really that thirsty that’s why she’s got over an hour of fuel on a full tank where almost all others only have 20-35 mins at full You don’t have TWS set up properly and it’s Gaijins fault for not explaining you need certain settings to actually use it. In air battle settings turn off “cyclical radar targeting” and go to keybinds and set your horizontal and vertical radar keybinds (use arrow keys or a numpad for best result) now you have FULL control over your radar like a RIO would and you have to manually slew a target reticle over radar blips and all of a sudden the radar works perfectly Phoenix don’t RWR lock. It appears as a search ping not a hard lock to them. So to them it could be some distant aircraft just using search radar

Probably because the missiles aren't strapped to a flying bus. The phantoms were great aircraft but I feel like Gaijin should have added the F-4S Instead of the J as a counter to the MLD. Instead we are stuck in a cycling powercreep where 1 nation gets FOTM and it is either nerfed or counters are added for it in the following update.

When has he said that he hates Missile thunder? Like he has complained about it but that's because it's not a perfect system at all, I don't recall him ever saying he hates it completely. I'm sure he prefers using guns, cause overall they are more skilled based and more satisfying to get kills with (subjective). Moreover you would be greatly handicapping yourself at top tier if you only used guns, so obviously he woulnd't do that.

PDV is pulse doppler velocity mode. It's your speed versus the target's speed. Edit: AIM54 will be nice on large EC maps. 60km kills have already been achieved in game using TWS mode.

Better if you don't know the ranges at which you'll be fighting (PDV will detect a target 100km away, but the PD mode needs to have the radar box showing 100km before the return will show up on the screen). I have also heard PDV has a slightly longer maximum range, but that is immaterial for Warthunder.

The differences between PD (Pulse Doppler) and PDV (Pulse Doppler Velocity) mode are quite small, but there are some, mainly how the radar screen is shown. Here are some things I could find in the datamines and through game observation: PDV puts velocity on the y-axis and shows you the blind speeds. It has no IFF and no rangefinder (idk what that refers to however) PD puts distance on the y-axis and as result can not plot the blind speeds anymore. It does however have some benefits brought over from the pulse mode, such are IFF and rangefinder. From what I can gather, it's still searches by doppler shift. Some other cool AWG-9 data that you might want to know: AWG-9 PD mode can track targets with a velocity difference of 60 m/s to 1500 m/s, this is worse than the F-4J which can do from -150 m/s to 1500 m/s On PD-tracking velocity difference goes to 40-1500 m/s. I'm not entirely sure what signalwidth refers to but signalwidth and speed width are: 5 and 0 respectively and 2 and 0 when tracking. The F-4J for comparison has 2 and 65 and 2 and 90 when tracking. So the F-4J's radar is more prone to jumping target when there are more target with speed is in that speed width (from what I understand). EDIT: width refers to the speed width, meaning that the F-14 apparently is not prone to jumping lock to another target with similar speed (unless they perfectly matched speed, but that's highly unlikely). EDIT 2: So AWG-9 doppler speed width were not 0, might've have been old values, but they are 120 now, this nears SARH missile levels of speed width, and we know how much those like to jump targets... But its sidelobe sensitivity got lowered, so it's not as extreme if it's not in the main beam. For comparison, APG-59 (F-4J, Spey Phantoms) also got nerfed to a width of 105, but their sidelobe sensitivity is higher.

It's a little weird that the F-14's pulse doppler mode is worse than that of the F-4J's in that regard. In reality, could those settings be changed or was it fixed? Very cool information though, nice to know even if in practice I think I probably won't apply it lol

@@_ace_defective_ I think a developer clarified this was realistic. Something to do with the waveforms used, not quite sure anymore, made the AWG-9 not able to do rear aspect at all*. I'll try find the text and respond here if I can find it. *correction: it doesn't lock when there is negative closure rate, so when the distance is increasing. The APG-66J on the EJ kai has the same problem, just a little less. Also in reality you had a RIO. They would manipulate radar settings so that the radar in essence can adapt to certain situations. And negative closure rates aren't that super important to be able to lock anyways, not a big loss.

Quick phoenix tutorial as I understand it: 1. you need button to select targets 2. you go to TWR 3. you stay in twr 4. you select target and shoot phoenix 5. you switch target and shoot antoher 6. and so on until you out of them 7. stay in TWR for another 15sec. 8. they wont work well below 10km you can use them also in normal lock mode but they dont turn so well you can use them in direct lock but that is pointless. Some concepts ppl need to understand: TWR does not track precisely. That is on purpose. Phoenix flies in general direction of the target until it goes to active mode. It does not need exact position of the target. You cant use TWR for sparrows. Please have more questions if needed.

Hey defyn I spent all day with the tomcat and have learned something pretty cool. The f14 TWS radar mode doesn’t require a lock to fire the Phoenix. This means when you see the box around the target without locking them the Phoenix can launch and won’t alert them on their rwr. I have had great success using the Phoenix this way as I can fire 4 of them and then swap to src pd radar for the sparrows. Hope this helps anyone figuring out the tomcat.

The two modes, between PDV and PD, are the same in that they are both Pulse Doppler. The difference they have is distance V. change in signal, where PD displays the targets position relative to the radar. In contrast PDV shows the change in distance, _and_ the speed of that change. The further up, on the PDV scope, the contact is the faster the change in distance, the closer to the filter the slower. If slow enough the contact will be filtered, shown by the clutter in the bottom of the PDV scope, as the radar assumes it's part of the environment in some way.

the difference between PD and PDV is the way the targets are presented. PD shows the targets by range and PDV shows them by speed while both are using pulse doppler scanning. if the radar sees a target at 20km in PD mode, it will show it on screen at position that indicates its range from you. in PDV it will show it further or closer based on how fast its moving towards you (the fastest it is the further the marker will be on the radar scope) which is useful for spotting missiles.

recall what you know about the f-14 and aim54c. cruise missiles. in mind would be used at higher altitude then say 3km or 10000ft. aim 54 is high alt use. just given the delay from launch. to detection to relay to launch aircraft. to hunt identify and destroy target. its high altitude think of the time delays while the missile is in flight.

The Mirage F1s got a flight model update that gives them better thrust at medium speeds and low to medium altitudes. That should make them have much better energy retention and acceleration, but it doesn’t fix their other issues with controllability at mid to high speeds because the instructor is messed up for them.

I use the the normal search mode for the aim 7s it seems to work a lot better and even if it breaks the lock when they launch chaff the missile will still smack them out of the air MOST OF THE TIME.

they watered down this plane way too much lol. anyway. PD = is the pulse doppler radar , this should not be a radar mode its a permanent feature regardless of the selected scanning mode. BST = Boresight aiming used usually with IR seekers, this should lock planes that you are facing with the nose pretty much a caged seeker head that you point at the target VSL = Vertical scan used usually with IR seekers, this allows the plane to achieve a lock about + - 90 degrees measured from aircraft nose in each direction vertically ... horizontally the scanning area is pretty narrow on this mode , you slave the seeker to the radar until it gets out of rails then it does the rest of the job by itself, used when you cannot pull into someone that is pulling hard and your plane is not able to nose inside its circle TWS = Track While Scan used usually with FOX 3's, it a radar mode that can lock people without giving them an warning that they have been locked, you can track multiple planes at the time with this scanning mode, the only RWR warning should he get is about 15s prior to impact when the missile is not slaved by your radar anymore and it goes known as "pitbull = missile switches one its own radar and does rest of the track" when missile goes pitbull you should be able also to break the lock as missiles switches on its own radar.

Where are we a year later? With the addition of the F-15 and the SU-27, do not even THINK about getting into a dogfight in the Tomcat. You will be... Essentially, melted. Instantly. But when you're not dogfighting? It's actually kind of fun. I like to climb to like mid space right at the beginning of the match so that I can sling two Phoenixes from space, and then immediately fly for the deck and flank the enemy. The F-14's radar being nerfed was absolutely criminal. It completely deleted our ability to lock an enemy from the rear aspect on the deck. Also, the 9H's at top tier are criminal. 9H's are literally 9G's. Imagine having 9G's as your best heatseeker at TOP TIER. No IRCCM or all aspect capability at top tier is just a gut punch. There are always flares in the air, so your missile will actually jump for flares fired by another aircraft. So what about the 7F's? They are honestly pretty good... But. There has been a lot of moments where my missile just... Gives up on life. Like, I have a strong radar lock, plus a strong tone, I fire, and my missile either blows itself up or starts turning erratically and completely misses my target despite having a strong radar lock for the duration of the missile's flight. Being able to rip your wings with them fully swept also sucks. But, the addition of a ballistics computer for aircraft is pretty amazing. Seriously helps out when you can scramble to have your radar in the right mode and actually getting a lock. So, where do I stand on the Tomcat? I wouldn't fly it right now. Top tier is absolutely unplayable because everyone except you has missiles with IRCCM. The Tomcat is even more of a boat than the fucking BV 238. Like, losing speed is a death sentence. Before you even know it, an R-73ER is shredding its way through your fuselage. Just wait for the higher BR'S like 13.0 to show up before thinking about having fun in the Tomcat. Where it sits as of now, (11.7) you are ALWAYS going straight to top tier. The sweats and tryhards will be out of your uptier range when we get above 12.7. So, just wait.

honestly the phoenix are quite op as not only it has active radar and you can fire far away its really dangerous if you fire more than 1 on 1 target and they most targets freak out and drain their speed, therefore the second one dose the kill. also i like to go high up as the phoenix goes faster and turns better. sometimes when you go high enough you can fire the phoenix and it wont show on the rwr as most aircraft have quite large blind spots on the rwr but i do agree with you with the aim 9f as they slap and medium and short range unlike the phoenix's which are only good for long range

Would you consider going back to the Mirage F1? It has an improved FM and thrust since this update. The Super R530Fs got fixed since at the time of your last video it still had the same stats as the regular R530. The Magic IIs are very potent even if they are nerfed.

The PD is like on the viggen or EJ Kai. Just a plain doppler radar mode. PDV is like the F-4J and FGR.2 doppler radar, showing relative speed rather than distance.

Fun fact, the Pheonix missile was actually intended for shooting down multiple bombers in mass bomber formations, not necessarily enemy jets. Sure they could theoretically work, but they were mostly for aircraft carrier defense against mass wave attack of bombers.

Updates like this and how the community responds is precisely why I am in favor of single player game modes. I agree with you on mixed MM, it's very annoying fighting the same plane you're flying, and of course it is something beyond your control. WT needs an air RB PvE mode for higher tier jets.

The Phoenix is woefully inconsistent. You really gotta lob a crap ton of them down range for them to really do much, but if you load up with 6 Phoenixes and snipe two enemy aircraft, that’s a sixth of the enemy team, at least. That’s a damn good contribution. Until some teammate decides to collide with one of your phoenixes in mid-air 😂😂😂

radar modes are just PDV pulse doppler velocity & PD pulse doppler. PDV is kinda weird, i would choose PD

TWS should only give the enemy notification of a nail, not an incoming semi-active radar missile. They shouldn't get a missile warning until the missile goes pitbull

Phoenix missiles are massively underperforming in war thunder lol. I think someone else clocked them on the dev server and they only go like mach 2.5 when irl they were going mach 5 just seconds after coming off the rail.

PDV is just normal pulse doppler, but instead of displaying targets by range it displays targets by velocity. Also PDV technically should lack the IFF

That’s why you fire the 54’s in TWS. Stop actually locking the aircraft. Wait for the broken box and then fire. Then prep another and it will TWS lock the next aircraft

Biggest improvment of the 9H is the track rate. Together with that small seeker and large gimbal it means the enemy needs to be in a almost perfect flaring maneuver. If they don't put flares in front of the seeker it will not lock on the flare. I think I would run this with 4 x 9Hs. I will wait and later get it as an air superiority fighter for ground RB with TWS and Phoenixes. These MiG-27K will die!

2 of the things that i do want to say is that the track while scan radar mode is really good bc you can track someone but they wont get a RWR laze but you can only use it for the Aim-54s because sparrows need a complete lock also why aren’t you using E-2s they are better at close range maybe 2 aim-54 2 Aim-7Fs, 2 Aim-7 Es and then 2 aim-9 Hs .but i really depends on the map if it big then the one i wrote if the map is smaller then 1 aim-54 and 3 Aim- 7 E2s, 2 Aim-7 Fs and 2 aim9 Hs

I don't think the F14 gets E-2's, it only gets E's i believe but historically i think it never used the E's and used the E-4's

Even if the F-14 had E-2s (E-4s have been reported and the devs will look into it, btw), 7Fs are really not that much worse. I still think 7Fs are better because you can use them for 10km shots (and doing it very fast), E-2s will be much less effective if you don't use them in close headons as they take much longer to reach similar distances (that are not 2.8 seconds away). The difference is only 0.2 seconds in maneuvering time. Arguably the 7F might be better off in most cases. The 7F starts guiding right off the rail, the E-2 doesn't move at all until 0.8 second has passed, but it will pull 100% instantly once it does. The 7F only pulls 100% after 1 second, but could maneuver before that time, albeit a bit less, but at least it allows for some small corrections, which I think levels it out. Maybe the only thing the E-2 actually has a big advantage is on is the fast burntime of only 2.8 seconds, after which it will only lose speed, allowing it to pull tighter than the 7F (which will maintain speed)... I think the latter is the reason why many see the E-2 as more maneuverable, although I still think it's quite a major sacrifice not being able to use them at somewhat longer and safer ranges.

So a valid use for the Aim 54 I noticed while Flying my FG.1 into the American teams is how they put you onto the back foot right from the start. I'm getting locked up from 20km away flying at treetop level 90 seconds after taking off. Like 3 or 4 guys launch Phoenixs or 7Fs at you and you gotta defend like 6 incoming missiles. And with that much warning it isn't hard to defend them but it forces me into notching and turning and chaffing. Any plans for how I'd like to engage the enemy team goes out the window and I'm starting the fight from a defensive position.

@@evangalinsky2499 where do you get this nonsense, IRL this missile can follow a fighter pulling its best ... because IRL planes arent pulling 14g at Mach ... if you get a Phoenix going for you inside the MAR your only hope of survival is to properly notch before it gets so close not even perfect notch will save you ... you need to beat its TRACKER because you will NEVER beat the missile itself.. people have this INSANE notion that they can actually "dodge" missiles IRL ... guess what, you cant, because doing so would require maneuvers that would tear the plane in half ... you are either too slow for pull to matter or too fast to do hard enough pull to beat the missile kinematically ... simply put you cant do 25g+ maneuvers you would need for Phoenix let alone 50g+ you would need to beat lets say R-73 ...

I'm spading my 14A and i either get ran down by the enemy team with no help from my team or I try to engage and get ran down by the enemy team with no help. Overall, I like it. The fuel consumption is by far the more annoying part of this plane, the shitty matchmaker, but the FM is pretty solid AIM9H's just feel like slightly faster AIM9G's, AIM7F's along with that amazing radar is very satisfying.

That is also realistic IRL. They are long range missiles, often time they don't hit (sometimes though), they make the enemies defend, losing altitude and speed. Then they use the other missile when they get closer to finish it off.
