The fact that we allow the aristocracy to keep hold of so much stolen wealth is insane and one of the biggest issues in the UK and its never talked about.

It's a common theme throughout Scotland especially the more rural picturesque parts to find tweed clad lackeys subordinate to pompous Englishmen in tartan trousers professing there love for bonny Scotland with one hand and strangling with the other.

The moral issue involved is that every person has an equal birthright in the planet. Yet, (mostly by force of arms) we have carved the planet into nation-states and carved the nation-states into estates for individuals and private entities to control. Controlling any part of the planet is a privilege, demanding compensation be paid into a fund to be used to pay for public goods and services and to distribute a citizens dividend to all. The amount of this charge must equate to the potential annual rental value of whatever parcel or tract of land is controlled. This approach to “land reform” will not correct all of the injustice of the past, but it will create a better present and a far more just future for all.

good management is the key there. I think Ulva was managed as well as it could be under private ownership. Imagine the money needed to keep a ferry running and to maintain a working farm. The Howards probably did this using the kindness of banks (!) and time will tell if the money can be raised to maintain the dream. As Jamie Howard questioned, can the Government justify the money spent to support the buy out? Should it have gone to something more pertinent in Scotland? All in all, a pretty good article.

How come most landowners in Scotland either sound English when they speak the English language or are English ?

I am a Scot who left in 1981 to try my hand over in Canada. Fortunately I did just fine in my new country. Personally I have no issues over English people moving there and pouring their lives savings in to purchasing land and looking after it, often better than the locals had done. I lived in Portsmouth for three years prior to moving to Canada and learned so much from my English professors at the college I attended. Please keep fhe likes of Donald Trump, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos etc. away from the land of my birth.

The owners of commercial properties (shops) would rent them to business- they don’t leave them empty on purpose. The trouble is the “High Street” is dying. Amazon & online is killing it These trusts get a lot of tax payer money to support & subside business that would otherwise fold.

How would one go about securing a piece of Scotch or Irish land for my wife and I in or to live, farm, build and raise a family? The land looks peaceful. How would it cost for maybe an acre of land with and is the government shady there?

You'll never find an acre for sale. If you do it's a needle in a haystack.

yeah a lot of the privately owned land is owned by trusts etc for the most part of the rest is worthless land in parts of the highlands which no one wants to live in because there is no local economy to get people to settle or stay for long
