The New Leica M10 Review and Overview. The Best M Yet.

The new Leica M10 has been announced and I have had the opportunity to shoot with it for the past week. Yep, it is an M. Nothing crazy here, no modern day EVF M....but instead a back to basics M. All is revealed in the video, and at my website:

This is a very good step in the right direction for Leica. Back to basics, what the M is all about. I just bought an M 262 because it lacks the live view, video, and heft of brass. Not to mention the price. The simpler, the better. I'm still really excited about the M10, not to buy one, but because it shows a good vision for Leica's future with the M. Only thing I'm not crazy about - That shutter... sounds a little squeaky. Totally just a nit-pick, but anyone that shoots a film M can tell you the sound is something you get addicted to. This just doesn't sound like an M to me, but others may love it! Thanks for the first look, Steve!

The m262 is an improvement, it cuts features Leica shooters don't use and it feels great to shoot with.

Nice thorough review Steve! I had my hands on the M10 today and felt the shutter release could've been quieter. It's definitely a sharper distinct metallic sound and slightly more audible than my Leica M-P.

This new leica M is amazing. ISO 50.000 to my ears says that perhaps the new monochrom of this new generation would be able to hit ISO 200.000 ? If so that will be brutal.

I was thinking of buying an M240 or 262 now that the prices will go down in the used market, but seeing the M10 turn out to be much more awesome than I previously thought, I might just have to start saving and wait a bit longer before getting a digital M. Wonder how much kidneys go for in the used market nowadays lol.

Nice review!! I'm not a Leica fan at all even though i appreciate their values. The shutter sound is really killing me, just like when I first handed on my Contax G and I wondered why Sony couldn't make the a7's shutter sound like that lol.

My only gripe of Leica are the lenses. Some copies are great and some are not. This new M10 is mighty appealing though. It also opens up to many who can't afford Summilux/Noctilux type of lenses because of the M10's high ISO capabilities. I wish they put an IS in-body to expand that shooting envelope but I think that would kill their bright lenses. I will buy one with FLE 35mm :)))

haha. there was no doubt you'd be on top of this one.. thanks for the video! glad to hear the high ISO is in at a very respectable high ISO than ever before. Not only does the thickness (or thinness) of this M10 sound very appealing for handling, but it's very nice to hear the viewfinder is larger and improved.. sounds like it will be friendlier for glass wearers like myself. BTW, is the thickness of an M7 that different than a MP, or an M6 or any other M?

Leica vs Sony. As far as real world use and applications, how does a camera like this compare to a Sony A7R2? Resolution, ISO, Responsiveness, Control and of course Picture quality. Using the same lens on both bodies, which one yields the better picture quality? Which one has better sharpness, detail and dynamic range?

The Leica will yield better IQ as it is made for these lenses. The sensor uses micro lenses to get the most from the M glass, the Sony does not. This has better color than the Sony, is built to a much higher standard and is a manual focus rangefinder. IQ here is top concern and it delivers. BUT it is a much different experience than shooting with a Sony. The Sony is half the cost but is this worth double? If you like the M way of shooting and want the best IQ from your M lenses, then yes ; )

For a long time I think M240 should set the wheel + button in front to be iso setting without pressing iso and see iso changes in the LED inside the range finder... we don't need EV compensation....

EV compensation is a must on a M for many and it is welcomed to be so easily implemented here, so yes, the wheel is perfect for using EV comp.

Oh yeah and the hand grip or lack there of... will a thumbs up be necessary for M10? It is essential for me when using 240 and 246

It's the same M design that has been around for generations. I am one of those who hate the thumbs up on an M. I like it naked, always have. The grip they made for this though is very nice and gives a nice grip for those who prefer that. The Leica thumb grip was super cool, and designed very nicely. Options are there for those who like a grip.

Loved the overview Steve. This is the M I've been waiting for. One question that no one has addressed yet... when you are using the focus aid in live view are you able to move it around? This wasn't possible in the m240 or the Q but they do it in the SL. It would be nice for not having to focus and recompose.

How can you tell that the sensor is new? Could it just be different processing algorithms instead?

Because I spoke and met with Leica who stressed twice this is an all newly designed sensor, and it is easy to tell as it has capabilities no other Leica digital has. ISO 12,500 is like ISO 6400 on the SL or Q. Color is fantastic, and yes, Leica confirmed it is an all new sensor made just for this M10. Thank you.

I doubt if in New York one in thousand people knows the Leica brand, let alone the new M10 telemetric camera. So no reason to disguise a camera from a very small niche market.

Hello Steve Great review! This is a great move on Leica WHAT TOOK SO LONG!!!! My go-to camera is the Epson RD1 using all the Leica Glass and still bangs out great images even with the antiquated technology. How's this M10 Vs the MMonochrome?

Thank you for the overview Steve, I have a few questions I hope you can answer. - What about start up time and stand by time? On M240 (I have a M246) it wasn't very fast. - Is stand by optimized like on dlsr? On M246 it drains batteries and doesn't get you back to ready-to-shoot fast enough. - Can you convert dng to jpeg in camera? It would be useful, since it now has integrated wi-fi capabilities. - Does it have any customizable button other then the wheel? What about the button on the front? Thank you, cheers!

Much better sensor, that is the main part that is so much better. The MD is the M240 sensor, same sensor. So the sensor and even feel is better. BUT the MD is beautiful as well. Love that camera.

OMG the X Pro is a knock off of the M, and a bad one. This M design has been around for generations. Fuji copied it with the X100, the the X Pro series and even tried to use the rangefinder term. The Fuji is in no way a rangefinder and feels like a hollow toy in comparison. The fuji is a Leica wannabe, and they have been for years. Thats the facts. But while Fuji's are great they do not come close to build, use, style, lenses, size, or quality of what this can do.
