In Episode 318 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with political and financial historians Edward Chancellor, Russell Napier, and Helen Thompson. All three have appeared individually on the podcast before and joined Demetri ahead of his latest Genius community dinner in London to discuss the changing nature of the international economic and political order.
Many of the material changes we are experiencing today are driven by the reversal of multi-decade trends in demographics, globalization, and low-cost, carbon-based energy sources. The ripple effects of these changes on inflation, risk rates, wealth & income distribution, national security, and the ruling legitimacy of national governments are already starting to materialize. Learning to navigate these changes is crucial if you want to remain ahead of the curve. Today’s conversation is meant to help you do just that.
The episode’s second hour begins with a discussion about the energy transition and its geostrategic consequences for resource-rich countries like the US and Russia, for countries that are heavily dependent on energy imports like those in the European Union, and for China, which is investing enormous sums of money into renewables and other, non-carbon-based sources of energy. The panel also discusses the possibility of a rapprochement between the US, Europe, and Russia, avenues for peace between the US and China, and some of the industries and sectors that are positioned to benefit, as well as those that you will want to avoid in this new economic and political paradigm.

Only comment on first part Dimitri - no mention of nuclesr/SMRs as denser energy source which is now safer than it's ever been. Expensice front end, but the obvious solution.

No mention if nuclear in this first half seems odd. Densest form of energy currently available and safer than its ever been.

Uranium is located in hostile countries who reasonably loathe white countries. Good luck with that.

What will replace globalization is the problem of centralization vs decentralization inside individual countries. Of course decentralization is liberalism. Those nations that choose decentralization will win in the long run. Those that choose centralization will descend into living hell if they don’t wake up in time.

Glossing over EROI...this is an extremely important part of the examination. Risk at 0%...malinvestment...shale oil revolution (tech productivity improvement) wasn't profitable at 0%...If cleantech/greentech has less EROI...then how can it be "successful" they quickly glossed over externalities...what about a pros and cons list...permanent inefficient sunk costs at global scale...with so much intelligence and ability for thoroughness...I'm taken aback at the lack of investigation into those streams of thought. Is this going along with a manufactured consent?

interest rate is social security for the rich who produce nothing, at the expense of the poor, it is a parasitic way of life interest rate should not be high than 3 or 4 %, it is the return to slavery, let money at the bank and let the millions little mouse working for you like slaves,, we need a more balance approach to let wealth and asset creation, people who want to get rich just need to work, that is why they call it working capital..instead of parasitic capital, see the place of government in our modern economy it is parasitic, how many parasite working people can sustain???how much work slaves can do to support freely they parasitic masters???

Ms. Thompson makes the eternal error in analyzing the problem of forecasting oil supply. We’re approaching 100 years of forecasts of Peak Oil, 100% wrong. Eventually the world will end and the doomsayers will be correct.
