Neko Case didn’t sing this one. Challengers was the first track to feature Kathryn Calder as lead vocals, as Neko was frequently unavailable due to her solo career/gigs. Not a big deal, but thought you might be interested. The vocals ARE stunning and go right to heart.

I first heard this at the end of a "Numbers" episode (Checkmate, season 4), and the vocals, the sound, the guitar, immediately spoke to me. Reminded me a little bit of some Cowboy Junkies stuff I used to play over and over. I can't wait to explore more of The New Pornographers' music!

Im don’t speak english very well but what I understand in this music it’s two people who love each other and they are together sometimes but both are married. When i was in a toxic relationship, it was destroying me. Then i met someone new. I did not cheat, i took courage to break up. And she waited for me to do that. The part “whatever the mess you’re, you are mine”. I fell like during months, she used to think like this. She is the love of my life.

This is a really nice video to help visualize the lyrics. I'm not great at understanding lyrics as they're sung, and reading them makes them seen more sad, but the pictures make them seem much warmer and more hopeful. It's a nice song either way, but it does mean there's some light at the end of the tunnel or potentially something to look forward to or hope for.

After one of my favorite trains was retired from active service right around the time of my breakup with my ex-girlfriend , I wasn't sure what was going to happen to the train and to my relationship with my ex. I've been with my current girlfriend for a while now. I learned that my ex-girlfriend died, right around the same time I heard the announcement that the train will be returned to service. Thankfully, the train has been sold to a company who is going to rebuild it and restore it to operational condition! The train's name is the Challenger. That's why I listen to the song. It's kind of a bittersweet feeling about the Challenger train, since it's a legendary train, yet knowing that my ex died during this historic occasion. I guess it's a message for me, that just like the Challenger train, it's time to move on to a new, better, brighter future. I think my ex is sending me a little glimmer of peace from heaven above that things will be okay for me and for the Challenger train. I believe it's just what I needed.

This is a great song. I'm really digging it. For some reason I was reminded of the Pretenders - Back on the Chain Gang. This isn't derivative, I think that it's just the lead vocals have that same sultry edge.
