@@fromdusktodawn509 Dave will DEFINITELY never do this again. He was opposed to the idea in the first place. I think it's like with Moog, they were pushed hard enough and finally accepted. I'm sure it's stressful doing reissues because it will get 100% scrutiny if not done 100% perfectly. It's a terrible gamble to do one, but if it works out, it really makes the brand get serious brownie points as a whole. We always say “why can’t these manufacturers make synths that sound as good as the old ones?” Well here ya go. Maybe through his trip down memory lane Dave figured out what that “it” thing is and will put it in the rest of his synths moving forward, because nothing analog since DSI started has sounded this good. He clearly can make “that” sound today. IMO nothing analog he makes from here on out should sound any lesser.

You know, this is actually a serious conundrum of Prophet 5 vs Prophet 6. It's really not so simple... the Prophet 6 has the vibe of the P5 but uses fully discrete circuits (technically the first synth Dave makes with a fully discrete VCO/VCF). Technically making the P6 "superior" for the 'purists'. It ticks every box (amazing analog distortion, DISCRETE VCO and VCF, sub oscillator, and a very nice FX section that lets you recall patches + their FX values. Whereas the Prophet 5 Rev 4 is a replica of the originals, but in the modern format/quality. It's NOT a discrete analog synth, it uses the same ICs as the originals. If the roles were reversed, it would be no trouble deciding between them - the purists would agree "I prefer the original with the discrete circuitry over the modern, IC one"... but in this case it's flipped around. The p6 is the discrete synth. Also, the Prophet 6, though not sounding identical to the P5, has a really gorgeous tone to it and yet another discrete filter (HPF) which makes it even more powerful for sound design use. Dave played his cards right. Everything in his product line is good and worth getting.
@SpacehotelMusic4 жыл бұрын
I've had a prophet 6 and an OB-6. This sounds better, discreet or not. Prophet 6 was kinda dull to me. A modern 'discreet synth' is necessarily the same as a discreet synth from 1980 (i.e the Korg Polysix sounded WAY better/more organic next to my Prophet 6 - both discreet. Korg Prologue 16 sounded better than my Prophet 6... Discreet again. I'm not a massive fan of "curtis chips" but this P5 just sounds great regardless of what it's doing in a way the P6 didn't.

@auxorion4 жыл бұрын
@@syntheticmoment9994 I just mean that the Prophet 6 is designed to be a pristine example of Dave's work - rather than depending on a chip, he designed out a whole discrete circuit for each voice. (It's funny how sloppy circuitry is a desirable thing for synthesizers.)

This is rather incredible. I own a few Sequential synths and this is by far their best effort to date. It's the first modern synth that sounds like a vintage analogue (that I've heard anyway). And the price is soooooooo reasonable. I might have to snag it just on those grounds alone. This from a Rev 2 Prophet owner as well :).
@bcm704 жыл бұрын
Not having a go and I'm obviously in a pretty small minority but they seem wildly over priced to me. For $1400 you can get a 16 voice Prologue that is pretty similar in terms of spec, paucity of LFOs and modulation possibilities included. You're looking at $4.2k for the 10 voice Prophet. Prologue misses out on aftertouch on the keybed (a $100 expression pedal gets you there mind you - it does respond to aftertouch) but picks up effects and the user programmable 3rd oscillator and effects. I realise it's "not a Prophet" - but is the sound of any Prophet that spectacularly different? It feels to me like if these synths had any other manufacturer's logo on them, there would be a very different response.
@Screaming-Trees4 жыл бұрын
@@bcm70 Fair dues. I have a rev2 Prophet 5, original, and this kind of nails that sound pretty good. To some that alone will be worth the price premium. The Fatar keyboard is nicer than the Prologue as well. The Prologue has versatility at the oscillator level and the Prophet has a bit more at the filter (I think they said all three filters were included). The Prophet doesnt' have as much scope in terms of sound design but that's probably not the point anyway. It sounds like the originals and that's the main selling point. The comparison to the Prologue should probably start and end there. If you like the way the Prologue sounds the answer is clear.
@juxty31024 жыл бұрын
@@bcm70 The prologue was on my potential list in getting back into hardware synth along with DSI rev 2. I was also looking at the deepmind as cheaper option. But going to hold and wait for beringher ubxa. The re-release of prophet 5 sounds good but pricey.
@Screaming-Trees3 жыл бұрын
@@bcm70 Just a short addendum to this. I recently discovered that the Prologue doesn't actually have a true analogue signal path. The outputs are essentially post-conversion (DAC). Which is kind of weird since you can't ever hear it in analogue this way. I don't know why they did this but it appears that they did. There is no bypass so before you get to the main outputs the signal has been converted to digital then back to analogue again. Strange decision but I came across this comment this morning and thought I'd let you know. Cheers.

love it.. however, be sure to read the info before you buy: It is important to note that the Prophet 5 reissue, like the original, does NOT contain any onboard effects. In this video, I used combinations of chorus, delay, and reverb and other FX to create the best ambience for the recording. I used the Strymon trifecta: Mobius (modulation), Timeline (delay), and Big Sky (reverb). Some folks may ask, "don't you miss having onboard FX?" The answer: not at all. Like all of the great vintage synthesizers, all the weight and effort was put into the synthesizer components. To me, it's almost better to have your signal processing separate. Then you have the best of both worlds. so it might sound pretty different when you receive it, strymon effects are pretty awesome (and 1 of them costs approx 400 bucks). So be warned.

Good point. Running a not very cheap synth through another $1200 of guitar pedals.

I was thinking the same thing. How much of what sounds amazing here is a Mobius, Timeline, and Big Sky? It’s nice the Prophet 5 can become this gorgeous, but it doesn’t sound nearly this big or beautiful on Sequential’s video without those effects.

I consider it a recommendation, not a warning.

@@DJKuroh Yup. This is a dream set up that I know, not everyone can afford. Down the line, I may make a demo video showcasing the completely "dry" sound of the instrument. But don't count on me for that. ;) I've already committed to a P6 vs P5 video. I will say though that the raw sound of the P5 is nothing short of superb...you can get deeply lost in the sound of those oscillators and filters. It's just that in a normal recording/performance context, you'd want FX to finish the sound out.

@ErsatzMoose Thanks re: Subdivisions. Yes, that was an Xa patch originally with Rush. I made the Subdivisions on my Xa and then remade it on the P5. I was surprised by how close they sounded. But, after all, the two synths share many of the same components. It's surprising that the two synths don't sound more similar.

I almost laughed out loud on the 411 example. "Here, THIS dial, I'll turn THIS dial. Then, a little more. Then, a little more. THEN a lot more! Awesome!"

Also I can’t imagine the extra cost of this is in the components, there’s no way there’s less more tech in here than a Rev2. It’s gotta be the collector special and the wood cabinet. Take these boards out and put them in a Rev2 case and we’d have something more people could afford.

How does this sound like the REV2?

Awesome demo~ So glad to be back to 5 octaves!

Thank you! I agree, the extra octave really changes things. I wish the P6 and OB6 had options for a 5 octave keyboard. It would change my relationship to those instruments.

oh my, that Zimmer Pad at 6:49... If that was the only sound the synthesizer was capable of, I would buy it anyway

Great preset, nice demo. Wow it's sounds like hell. A Strymon Big Sky behind and it could be perfect.
