Jim is a true romantic sax hero; the way he pulls out those sumptuous, dark legatos and 1960s smoky jazz lounge rooms phrasing, is thrilling. Soundwise, I think this sax has something that Selmers, Yamahas and Yannis in this range do not have: smokiness and understated sophistication. A sax for a sophisticated gentleman or a groovy lady.
@Tracksafe
@Tracksafe Жыл бұрын
I’m sure the smoky sound has more to do with the mouthpiece, reed and individual play style. An equally smoky sound can be achieved on other saxophones.

Yeah, whatever Jim plays is going to sound good. The horns are nice, but it's the play who makes the music.

@@Tracksafe Not every saxophone can do this. Some instruments use materials & design that allow easy production of certain tone characteristics. This sax loves mid-layer of frequencies, ruffles them up, and it appears it can't easily stimulate the lower frequencies layer. On the other hand, usual Mark VI was primarily made for punchy RnR playing, with emphasis on medium-high layer of frequencies.

All R&C Saxes I played so far were gorgeous. I bought the Solista Alto just after Jim’s review and I own a Due Voci Tenor, which blew me away the first time I tried one. The Performance looks beautiful and its sound is still wonderful…certainly it’s money well spent-thanks guys!

I compared this and an R1 extensively and at the end choose the performance. It has a much more versatile tone with the right reed and MP setup, and can play pretty much all styles of music while from the R1 you wouldn't be able to get a crystal clear Stan Getz Bossa sound. The R1 one is definitely my second pro sax though. It's the most unique instrument on the market. Nothing comes close.

I would love to see a comparison between some of R&Cs solid copper instruments vs solid silver vs bronze and brass. The solid copper saxophone is a strange beast and as beautiful as they are I'd be reluctant to buy one without expert guidance.

It depends what exactly you want to buy - alto? tenor? For what purpose? For example, R&C alto made from bronze, has a very sophisticated sound, that has many hints of a tenor sound. But the copper version sounds a bit lighter, and does not have such tenor-ish bottom. Silver version has attributes of both. If you want tenor sax, though, with bronze models you get extra depth, way below the usual tenor sax reach - no Selmer or Yamaha can sound like that. With copper version you get more sophisticated mids than with a brass saxophone. Etc.

I am mostly thought the video and they haven’t specified yet. Are these made in Italy or SE Asia?
@saxworldwide
@saxworldwide Жыл бұрын
Made in Italy. However, it's true to say that R&C are not holding out for 100% of all parts being made in their factory, like the R1 Jazz. For example, they are being lacquered at a nearby facility within 20km of the factory.
@AcevedoDMA
@AcevedoDMA Жыл бұрын
@@saxworldwide thank you for the reply. I am mostly just concerned they were stamping their name on an Asian horn. Not that the horn would be assumed to be bad, but the language used made it seem that way. I can’t imagine a major company made brand new tooling for a lower cost horn. It seems more likely to stencil.

I played one of them. They changed so many features that were the bread and butter of R&C that it feels, looks and plays like a Taiwanese horn. Not that it's bad, it's actually good but why do they have to hide it?

@@ngtamphuong Personally I like Selmer, I've never played a Rampone... The Rampone curved sopranos are beautiful, I've looked at them online for hours. What they do with the metals is very artistic and as they said bespoke. They are not in music stores in my area. We tend to have American brands. Yeah I agree with you why would R&C go in this direction? And make a generic horn? It's sort of like rolex making a swatch. It sounds like the business people have taken over and are just pushing margins now. Personally I didn't care for the sound of it either, but I'm nobody to criticize Jim.

I agree that it has a certain look that might make you think that, but it has been designed using CAD by R&C. As mentioned in the above comment, they are not going down the route of making every part of the saxophone in their factory, but the lion's share is coming from their factory.
