We used to stay here a lot in the 90’s and early 2000s. The show in the sky was amazing! Hopefully they will get it back to its original glory. The rooms look nice but that deserted area is kinda creepy and need to get some more stores or restaurants in that area. Thanks for going back there, great job.

I like the redoing the rooms. I never stayed there. We would always stop at the Rio during our vacations. It was such a fun place that casino floor was always thriving. The Mardi Gras in the sky was so much fun to watch. I really like to see them make a full comeback because they were The place to hang out back in the 90s?

The room you had was really nice and very attractive. We had stayed there many years ago when they had one of the Star Trek conventions. At that time, the "Show in the Sky" was very active and gave the whole area a party like celebration. I hope they do something with that space. I would consider staying there.

my wife and i celebrated our 25th aniv. at the rio. it still had the carnaval show and floats. and we enjoyed the room as well. we came back to see a show a few years ago and were sad to see how quiet the place was. we will be back for a visit next year and we will check the place out during . it was 2009 that we stayed there.

I visited vegas for the first time last June, and stayed at the RIO. It honestly was a ghost town, lots of places were closed, but honestly I wasn't there for the hotel. I went there to see the strip and it was a fairly easy walk to the strip, plus the price was right. I look forward to seeing it updated when I visit again this summer.

I checked in for a 3 day stay yesterday and checked out the same day. My room looked very close to yours, "updated" but I feel like it's cluttered. The window being gone is good, but the rooms felt more open in the past. The water was an issue in my room as well. The casino is still kind of dirty and smelly, especially at the ends by the Masquerade and the Sports Book, most of the rest is blocked off with construction outside the food hall and game floor. The big problem was the internet was out in the towers..not the casino though...ALL DAY. They didn't tell me at check in (I had to call the desk and wait on hold for over 30 minutes to speak to someone) though they started telling guests who checked in later, gave no updates, had no info, made no offers for the inconvenience like upgrades or dinner, no resort fees back, acted like it was no big deal, and were ok with people just leaving. Their service has not improved over Caesar's who has the worst service ever. This is not what Vegas used to be. They would do everything in their power to get you to stay, not be ok with you walking out the door. You pay an exorbitant resort fee for services like this. I used to work doing hotel network support for AT&T internet. We handled everything from mom and pop boutique hotels, to Holiday Inns, to Disney, to the Four Seasons Beirut and other international spots. When a hotel called us, we could remote in and see every server, every router, every access point, and their status, how many devices were connected to it, how many devices were connected in each room, diagnose and fix issues remotely, walk them through turning on and off, set up techs, they were always priorities, and always had an ETA. The Rio staff claimed they had no info from Cox ALL DAY. No tech had even set foot on property ALL DAY. Their routers were clearly not speaking to their servers, so either they were lying and had unfavorable info and didn't want to pass it on, they were afraid to push the provider for answers therefore showing no care for their guests, or they are not at a service level making them a priority to Cox meaning we are not a priority to the Rio. I went down to the desk to check out since it was same day and you couldn't do it on the tv and I also wanted to explain to a manager why I was leaving. Long line, other guests with issues were coming and circumventing the line and being helped making others' waits longer, desk agents had attitudes with most people with issues, and the manager was just ineffective and unhelpful. They will never get my money again. Everyone will have a different experience, but I will avoid it like the plague.

I always loved the Shutters Bar. Did well at high limits despite this being a Caesars property. The Rio Vibe was special. I was here the first year they opened and came several times a year thereafter. I got a great host (Michelle Wilcox) and was invited out for very special and exclusive golf events. She moved to the Planet and I followed but would always visit the Rio on every visit. Sad to see it fall into disrepair but maybe now it will be better. Wish I could remember the bartender at Shutters. He was there for years.

I am glad they are renovating it. That little window looking into the shower was the weirdest thing. I don’t know if I would stay there. Even renovated it is a really old building. I don’t think renovating includes a whole new plumbing system so the hot water is a problem. Sitting vacant for so long I would have concerns about mold issues in those rooms. Although the room rate is probably the lowest in Vegas now. I know the best place to watch the fireworks is their parking garage. You can watch a panoramic fireworks show from the top of it! Maybe more time renovating it will bring people back. Nothing is calling me back yet. The reno’d rooms do look much much better than the old dated rooms though. I am still in “it depends” land as far as staying there again.

We got married in our suite at the Rio in 1998 at night with the ceiling to floor windows as our backdrop. Hubby spent a lot of time in the elevator hoping to run in to Tiger Woods who we were told was staying on our same floor. It was in it's hay day then, it was not a budget place. And we are still married! 🙂

@@seanmalone2307Buffets are pretty much a thing of the past, sadly. I highly doubt the buffet is coming back there, or in any property that used to have buffets. They have all moved to “food halls” where there are restaurant choices. I think there are only 3 buffets left in LV at other properties and they are very expensive! Gone are the days of affordable days in Las Vegas.

In the late 1990's and early 2000's, the RIO was a great place to visit. Altho I didn't book a room there, I stopped by often to wss The Masquerade In The Sky Show. The original performance was great ( peerecorded music, stage dancers, giant peacock rising to the stage from below for 1 or 2 songs). Then they changed it. Attention went away from all thecdancers to a couple singing on stage. The act lacked the energy it once had. I go there yearly for the Trek Convention now. I'm hoping that accomdations are vastly improved, I've heard not so goodvtales, but I'm hoping that a change in management brings back the "fun" that the Rio once had and lost.

I live in California and I spent three nights at The Rio last week. It was a little quiet. The new rooms are nice. The Philly Steak at Tony Luke's was delicious. Staff was great. I can't wait to visit again in a few months to see more changes. I have visited The Rio many times in the past and I miss the old Seafood buffet. It was amazing.

Great video Tanya and Dave! I used to stay at the Rio often back in the early 2000's and I used to love the "Show in the Sky" that would happen in the Masquerade Area. You would be playing slots and a parade happened above your head and it was very lively. Once that show ended, the Rio started to fall apart.

Thank you for the updated review. I would be willing to try a renovated room. The problem with the Rio, is it’s so far off the strip. Maybe you could stay occupied for a day or two but after that you would need to go to the strip, and pay extra for taxis and Ubers to get there and back. I was there about 10 years ago and it was very old and tired. However, I absolutely loved the rooftop bar and I understand from your video it’s closed right now, it was very cool and I hope it’s reopens soon.

The room looks really nice. Glad they covered up the window into the shower.😂 They may have been having issues with their plumbing when you were there. A few weeks ago the Flamingo didn't have any hot water for a couple of days too. Have so many great memories of Rio, especially in the Masquerade area with the Show in the Sky, catching beads, the amazing buffets (two of them) and the cocktail servers who not only served but would also perform every hour or so. Spent my 40th birthday at VooDoo Steak and VooDoo Lounge/nightclub. It was the best. Hope they can bring it all back to it's former glory.

The pool and the voodoo restaurant was awesome. Dancing on that roof top at night was 🔥 seafood buffet was delicious and affordable. slots were hot. Poker tournaments were my favorite.

Rio was always my first stop whether we were flying or driving in. 19.99 buffet with 5 bucks extra for seafood buffet was the best value. Also making things even better was carnival show and we were given loads of beads and danced amongst carnival girls. During that was going on there were literally no empty slot machines in the floor and all table games were full. Rio still has long ways to go judging from your video and I hope new owners are serious about this project. (Not like Nascar Saraha debacle)

They used to do a $49 rate no resort fee back then. We got there really really late almost midnight and they said I’m sorry we’re out of your room right but as long as you’re only staying one night we could upgrade you to a suite we stayed. I think it was the 15th floor the big, circular suite it was awesome, this is back in the 90s.

I stayed at The Rio in June, 2022...I was heated! The room was awful! I'm glad that it's finally being renovated but it's still too far from the strip for me....I will visit...maybe...but not stay there again! Thanks for sharing ❤

This place is like the Virgin on the other side of the strip. Both need to establish brand loyalty (find their market segment). The North Strip properties, Resorts World, Fontainebleau, and Sahara are in a slightly different boat. Those properties are in a symbiotic relationship with each other and with the convention center, and need to compete with the Strip. RW, F, and S should immediately eliminate resort fees and provide free and fast bus service from the airport. Virgin and Rio need to develop a loyal customer base with marketing schemes so that they don't get into fierce competition with the Strip. E.g. Virgin and Rio should do status matches for both Caesars and MGM, and also coupon/comp matches, so that anything you can print out and present for a discount on the Strip will be matched.

Off topic: I recently saw Penn and Teller on a night show (Jimmy Kimmel or Fallon, don’t remember which) They were asked if they were going to stay at the Rio since it had become a ghost town and affected their show. The answer was interesting. Apparently people still go over there to their show, so they still have an adequate audience, people just don’t stay there because it got so run down. Somehow (you never really know who owns what in Las Vegas), Penn said they are in their 24th year there. They will retire after their 25th year and Penn wanted to do his whole career in one show room. Penn said they (him & Teller) actually own the building and are going to give it to the city (free!) once they close their show. He explained why they would be giving it to the city I just can’t remember the whole story(it’s late night TV lol. Sleepy when he was talking). I did not know Penn & Teller owned the building, so I wonder how that works? Why did he let it get so run down? Las Vegas is weird in who really owns what but he very clearly said him and Teller would be giving it to the city. In 2 years. That’s fascinating to me. They may own the structure and lease it out to whoever wants it? Who knows what it will be in 2 years. I don’t think it will ever be a Hyatt though. Unless the city sells it off? Something to keep track of in any case.

I went to the Rio for the first time in 2006 and thought it was top notch beautiful. In 2015, I attended a travel health care professional convention. We stayed in a suite that was definitely dated. The voodoo lounge was terrific with that view. The pool was great back then.

Like how you say things are spicy or not before putting your hot sauce on. I'm not into spicy. I do remember when when trams of floating people throwing beads. I still have the beads and the Grandkids play with them. Fast hot water is important, because not good to waste waster. Glad to see a refrigerator even though it's small. Since this is not on the strip, it needs to have something unique to pull people in. Seeing empty area's would be an eerie feeling. Looks like a nicer room, but nothing that stands out. Wish at least disabled rooms would have a walk in tubs. Clean refreshed rooms at a good price is worth a stay there. Do they still have free shuttles to the strip and so on?
