Professor Paco Calvo & author and illustrator Natalie Lawrence join us to discuss their book "Planta Sapiens: The New Science of Plant Intelligence" - an astonishing window into the inner world of plants and cutting-edge science in plant intelligence. Decades of research document plants’ impressive abilities: they communicate with one another, manipulate other species, and move in sophisticated ways. Lesser known, however, is the new evidence that plants may actually be sentient.

Paco Calvo is Professor of Philosophy of Science and PI of the Minimal Intelligence Laboratory at the University of Murcia, Spain. His research is on plant neurobiology, ecological psychology and embodied cognitive science. Paco Calvo studies the ecological basis of plant intelligence. His lab uses time-lapse photography to explore the navigational capacities of plants. His articles have appeared in Annals of Botany, Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, Frontiers in Neurorobotics, Frontiers in Robotics and AI, Journal of the Royal Society, Plant, Cell & Environment, Plant Signaling & Behavior and Trends in Plant Science, among other journals.
Natalie Lawrence is an author and illustrator who explores our relationship with the natural world, looking through multiple lenses - from the biological to the psychoanalytic. She has a first-class MCantab in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge, during which she spent most of her time in the Zoology department. She received a MSc and Ph.D. in History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Cambridge. She’s given a TEDX talk, been featured on BBC Women’s Hour and has work published in BBC Wildlife, New Scientist, Aeon Magazine and others. She currently lives in London and writes in a room filled with plants and specimens from her natural history collection, from megalodon teeth to hornbill skulls.

Wow that was a waist of time. You didn’t explain anything about plant intelligence at all , or if it was it was so vague. Very disappointing talk about a great subject. Typical scientists trying to confirm what’s been known for thousands of years. We’ve been doing science on the benefits of meditation. And science has discovered that meditation has health benefits! Lol wow is that amazing 🙄

I have always wondered why vegans seem to think it's less cruel to kill and consume plant life than it is to kill and consume animal life. All living food is life.

Why does the arrow is always to the vegans? Does a Mango feel more pain than a cow?

It takes more plants to feed animals that we kill for meat, than if we just eat plants ourselves. Therefore less plants are killed on a vegan diet. Hope that helps. .

Being eaten is a part of the plant reproductive cycle, but I know you're just trying to troll so I'm gonna leave it at that.

@@SourovKabirII A mango is a fruit ... It's just like your hair and nails ... Plants don't need pain when they have defense mechanism to protect themselves from getting eaten ... Humans exploited it via biotechnology

@@summerbreeze4632 it takes more land to feed a population which doesn't consume meat ... Many Asian countries where meat culture isn't dominant have large lands for farms which involves cutting down forests and capturing land ... Taking away the natural habitat of many animals ... India has this issue ... Too many people ... Meat is less popular and you have rising need for food ... A 3rd world country where majority don't get protein diet due to lack of meat ( reasons are it's cultural and second it's expensive) ... Most kids with malnutrition... Vegan diet also means you need to grow crops that yeilds more ... Farmers are at distress because the variety decreases and lands are getting expensive... People who can afford meat are living healthy lifestyle and proform better in labour force while those who eat vegan diet don't have an advantage... No supplements are too expensive thanks to tax by the government... Also the body type is due the fact that British people did all they can to not feed Indians a good protein diet .. hence why you have skinny fat people a lot in India ... Veganism would be ideal if you are in a developed country...
