Hello and welcome to the NEW SPY GUIDE! I created this guide to help out people who are new to the Spy in Team Fortress 2. Even if you have several hundred hours as Spy, there is always more you can learn too. So this is for those people. The ones who want to improve in TF2 at a class they like. This is the first video in the new tutorial series and there are more to come!

Spy Loadouts that i recommend: Letranger + eternal reward + stock invis watch You have 8% more cloak since eternal reward takes away cloak from the bonus of the letranger, but being able to stab enemies without others knowing is great for learning how to act like a disguise! The eternal reward does use all of your cloak just to disguise, so remember to stay away from others if you dont have a disguise. this also works with Cloak and dagger if you want to go a bit slower. Big Earner + stock gun or diamondback + cloak and dagger You can stay invisible in areas for a while, helping you learn hiding as invisibility, while allowing you to run away fast after backstabbing. The downside is that you get less health, so make sure you use big earner as much as you can. (Btw, when using cloak and dagger you have to uncloak to pick up ammo boxes) Using Kunai + Diamondback + dead ringer allows you to learn how to aim, and how to backstab without getting hit. Just know that you are a glass cannon without any overheal. I also recommend walking at an angle to backstab someone, since its less suspicious and makes it so they cant back up into you until you're already ready to backstab. Remember that your knife moving into the backstab position is delayed, so try and figure out when you can backstab by just looking, so you dont have to depend on the animation of your knife flipping. Play pyro for a bit, learn how you move, then try and emulate that movement when disguised as a pyro.

A neat bit of info: use the cloak and dagger with your eternal reward. Standing still while cloaked allows you to disguise and stay cloaked, only "blinking" out of cloak for a split second. So just sit in a corner or high up and then disguise.

@mjw6901 yeah but it takes an eternity to wait for the cloak to come back. I would rather just grab a few ammo kits personally. But i guess if youre using the cloak and dagger youre gonna be waiting an eternity for a stab anyway

@SniggityDiggity you can stand on an ammo pack and double right click, you'll only be visible for like a 10th of a second, and a skilled tf2 player would see the ammo disappear anyway

While true, everyone is going to notice the spy fully decloak and recloak while you stand in the same position for over 10 seconds. I think the cloak and dagger should only really be used for like maybe camping medics where there arent any ammo packs? Im not sure, its not a super useful watch imo. With stock you can remain cloaked forever AND be able to move where you want

@SniggityDiggity I'm not saying you should disguise then use the ammo box, I moreso meant you could use the CaD to travel, especially if you have the l'etranger, and then use the ammo box, move to a corner behind enemy lines, disguise then uncloak

One thing someone who wants to improve as spy can do is record their own gameplay to look back on later. By analyzing your own gameplay and using the power of hindsight, you can learn what you need to improve on pretty easily. If you want to, you can also take notes as you analyze your gameplay.

1st of all, a piece of advise is increase fov and use minimal models. it goes for all classes. Especially spy since you want information alot, having more things to keep track of VS amount of clutter on your screen is an essential. I suggest looking up OG Frag tubers or Aar videos on this technical topic

I like to do that and peek out so they think im a scout but then ill cloak and run away. It leads some people to chase something that isnt there.

clicked on this because i main pyro and yeah the footsteps and audio cues are what im listening for 100% of the time. i'll pretend to be "afk" in a quiet area listening for footsteps and watching the killfeed. I'll turn to triangulate sounds a lot to figure out where a spy is and eventually the doppler effect and the sound differences start to kick into clarity and then ya just fwoosh the cloaked spy that thought you were AFK.

@@SniggityDiggity It's definitely a cat and mouse game type thing! Thinking from a metagame PoV: I'm 100% a support pyro so the presence of a spy can deny our team a pyro on the frontlines and during pushes, which can leave a more frontline-oriented spy free to do work. Most of my gameplay is in denying and harassing flank routes and going for assists. :D

Stock loadout is good, reliable and the best for every new spy Kunai, dead ringer and diamond back is for REALLY skill spy main it really hard for new spy and new spy shouldnt use this loadout L'etranger, stocks is for knife spy who want some time for cloak Big earner is for someone to want new change for stock loadout or having trouble when getting out or want chainstab Don't use dead ringer of cload and dagger if you are new because it will teach you bad habits, use stock if you are new. The big earner will basically being 1 shot by alot of things, only use it if you play spy for good play time. Spy cicle for gun spy or you hate pyro. Yer is extremely not friendly for newbie

I'm showing that you dont have to be aggressive to be good at spy. If you are simply sneaky rather than trying to go for every trickstab, you'll get a lot more done for your team.

I made a short video about the essential things new spies should know. Playing the game is a great way to learn for sure, but if you are new and just keep repeatedly dying and not knowing why, I think watching a short video might help some people. ;)

@@sizzling6063 Looks like a fine video. It is current and simple. Someone new ish to TF2 (say from the summer update) get a well rounded video not made by some trick stab no life spy. Giving awful advice best left for it's own videos and with the idea of someone knowing the basics. Like what load-outs to use in 2023. But yea it is bare bone. But the amount of people that do not understand how people can pin point a spy on the cloaks alone is insane. Like that was not something talked about back in 2011-2013 at all. So much of the combat sounds is just white noise playing TF2. But spy cloaks are so drilled into good players to the point of making even good spy player look silly trying to de cloak even mid range from you. Let alone anyone with a account date from 2020. Or just say 2023. Like no joke the amount of BS deaths spies are dealt with from me just spinning around like I was running wall hacks or something is... It is like spies have no idea how obvious they are being. Playing agents people running music in the background or something and never realize why some people check there backs as they de cloak. New spies on my teams are some of the scariest shit ever. They are so random in there actions and de cloak and go random places. Making the spy check senses go wild over nothing more then a F2P yet to get there hands on the Cloak and Dagger.
