I think that the traditional maker’s mark is more charming/authentic than a laser or electro-etched mark. But that’s just me.

The stamp is nice but I think I'm leaving that for brute de forge knives. The laser is much more efficient for the rest of the knives I do and the mark is crisp.

That's a nice kit. Bit expensive for this hobbyist but, I could see a lot of uses for it. Definitely worth what they want, from what I'm seeing.
@JPsBladeworks3 ай бұрын
Yea the are expensive. If it wasn't given to me for promo I probably wouldn't buy one myself for some time. Being a hobbyist myself I don't make enough to justify the purchase.

Great stuff I’m so glad you’re getting known enough for company’s send you things I’ve been thinking about getting a laser to etch my makers mark on my knives,,,,, my friend keep up the good work Scott from Australia

Thanks. I get a emails weekly for all kinds of sponsorships but I reject most of them. I only like to take sponsorships for products I that make sense for my community and knife makers in general.

Very cool, and I'm impressed with how clean and how deep the mark gets.

I was having issues with getting it deep then I remembered I could do multiple passes and the rest was history.

Nice piece of kit! Hut that makers mark with a little brass black and it will stand out really well!

I've seen that used. Seems to work well. Is it food safe to use for chef knives?

Question: Can you make it a bit smaller and darker? These triats will come in handy!
@JPsBladeworks3 ай бұрын
I'm not sure how to make it darker. I'm not good enough with it yet but it's easy to change the size of the marking.

It would make things easier..but then again etching my mark is one of my fav tasks!!
@JPsBladeworks3 ай бұрын
I make my own stencils for electro etching so this eliminates having to do that and makes it more efficient for me personally but I can see how you enjoy doing it by hand. Now only if I could get a machine to do my handsanding 😂

good morning JP, now that you have a LAZER now you need a shark to put it on its head. lol. for a 1600 investment fast and looks great.

It's a learning curve to learn the program but that's the same with whatever you do. I also have more sponsorships coming in the near future. I reject most but these lasers are so cool I can't say no.

@@JPsBladeworks i have been meaning to ask, but what abrasives do you use on your 2x72?
@JPsBladeworks3 ай бұрын
@dagnard5707 I usually use red label abrasives but I don't have a loyalty. If it's high quality and cheaper I will give it a try. But since I've started I've stuck with red label abrasives.

Using it for the maker's mark is one thing but when it comes to designs/features of the blade itself, I would place more value on those that were created by the craftsman's hand than by laser. Doing such thjngs by hand is also a skill. By using technology to "cheat", you will never hone that skill. You can buy high quality blades that are mass produced by technology. The only real point to learning a craft loke bladesmithing these days is so we don't entirely lose those skills. Any time technology fails, we have the craftsman to fall back on. The craftsman who also relies heavily on technology only possesses a fraction of the skill of one who doesn't. Even if you feel you will never compare to the likes of Ilya Aleskeyev, it shouldn't stop you from trying (and my apologies if I got Ilya's last name wrong as I'm going from memory here).
@JPsBladeworks3 ай бұрын
Yea mean we shouldn't use them for makers marks and use other ways or are you talking about the people that laser the whole knife to pass it off as a layered construction when it's not? Because if it's the second I agree. If it's the first I disagree. Tech is here to be uses and be effective. If the world goes to shit next week I'm more worried about other things than if my laser can mark my knife.
@JPsBladeworks3 ай бұрын
Also I don't have an idea what Ilias last name is but the man is a monster of a craftsman and I have no intention or want to ever get to doing the kind of works he does. He loves that work and I respect it and he makes beautiful pieces. I don't compare myself with others or strive to do what they do. I just do what's fun for me and what makes sense on the numbers.
@Nitehawke3 ай бұрын
@JPsBladeworks I meant the first, yes. These are actual skills I feel would be tragic to lose. And while I absolutely agree that Ilya is a legend, he's also been honing those skills for years and I guarantee his work in the beginning was probably crap compared to now. We all start somewhere. While I also agree technology is a great asset, I disagree with exclusive use of it in anything. You don't stop using your feet because you get a car. You don't not learn basic cooking skills because TV dinners exist. You get the idea. The etching machine is a tool. So are skills. The difference is that one wears down with use and will eventually fail you while the other just gets better the more you use it. But, as with all advice given but not asked for, you are free to ignore what I say. I love your work at any rate and enjoy seeing you improve as you gain experience. I look forward to seeing more in the future.
