In a dream, Millius astral travels to the stratosphere and discovers a hole in the Earth's protective ozone. Alarmed, he asks David and Tomte to take a research trip. Trumpeters herald their departure in a stratospheric balloon. A gathering of Gnomes bid them good-bye. As they ascend high into the atmosphere a tornado blows them off course, caring them away to Patagonia. When they collide with a sun blind condor, David guides the disoriented bird to safety as Tomte crash lands the balloon and gondola in a lake.
