Not intending to infringe copyright laws, but the producer is no longer around and this is intended for archival purposes.
Unfortunately it is a bit laggy near the beginning, this is due to my computer being very old and I was recording from the tape at the highest setting.

Wonderful program. W192 is at Ferrymead Vintage Railway Christchurch, W644 is at Glenbrook Vintage Railway near Pukekohe ( Auckland ) C864 is also at Ferrymead, C847 is in the North Island, Kb968 awaits a full rebuild. JA1274 is on display at Dunedin Railway station, but not in running condition, i believe it was the last JA built at Hillside Workshops, some of the AB,s were also from Hillside WS, W192 was built at Addington WS Christchurch. As for the power of the DG diesels, 750hp they were rated at, even our AB steam locomotives were at least, or more powerful than 750hp. I could be wrong.

New Zealand governments (and private enterprise) since the 1950s has never really invested seriously in railways, as have some other countries. ok we haven’t got the population density of other developed countries … but there other factors in rails favour like bulk export commodities, tourism and the majority of New Zealand’s population is along Auckland to Wellington rail corridor. When You ever I can, travel from Palmy to Wellington via rail … such a pleasure, and only slightly longer time than car even with transmission gully.

The thing that might find a solution would be to return mixed trains and make the stations in the country side be stopped by requesting once again

rail was great. it would take weeks. they would go on strike. they would lose it. they would damage it. they would steal it. other than that? a truck did and still does get it there next day, no contest unless its logs or coal.

So true. More of a nz tragic story. Could have been great except for the scumbags & dregs who worked there. It still could be great with proper management.
@Mercmad
@Mercmad 3 жыл бұрын
@@tip397 Not all of us were scumbags. I was a third generation NZR worker ( Loco maintainer) ,Both grandfathers were railwaymen as were several uncles and cousins. What was missing was proper management . To become a manager you had to climb the ladder from Apprentice or cadet .Unfortunately this allowed some people to gain jobs who really had no idea of vision. Add to that, the political aspirations of clown like David lange and the whole place was doomed. As for trucks. One truck,costing up to $500,000 ,with a working life of ten years, can carry as much as one medium sized railway wagon. Today trains can haul 100-200 wagons for the same fuel and depreciation costs as truck with a measly 46 tonnes.. The maths never added up .

My mother was a telephonist with the railways and met dad who was a clerk, mums dad was a engine driver in woodville, dads mum served cuppa's at Kaitoki, dad became a Station Master in Mangatinoka, Featherston (where I used to play on the train in the park in 1963) next we were in Hunterville, for a few years, then National Park in the late 60's, start of the 70's. Then shifted to Gisborne where dad was assistant Station Master Goods, until he retired. My brother Paul was in Train Control Wanganui. My uncle Lionel Pope was a shunter in Woodville and later Auckland. My bro in law John McCafferty was a loco assistant from Gisborne to Napier. I probably wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the NZ Railways.
