I agree except for the timeframe. While not law it is considered extreme bad luck for any ship to be named for a living person and is begging to be sunk by doing so by most that go at sea. Also such bad luck transfers with the name even after that person dies. The last carrier named for someone not long dead was the USS Forestall and it burned twice, once from a missile fired by a future Senator from her deck then during a refit in the late 90's causing her to be stricken early. She was the conventional powered sister to the Enterprise.

Early Carriers were named for first in Aviation and Battles, The Battles like Saratoga or Lexington might shift back to other classes (Built on planned Battlecruiser hulls that kept the names when adapted) But Kittyhawk, Langley, Wasp and Hornet needs restored to the list. Also the new headlines "Hornet launches her nest of Hornets to Sting the enemy" Medal of Honors or High ranking officers should be used for your escort and patrol ships of the fleet of Destroyer to Frigate classes that are the point of the spear and shield to encourage that fighting up close spirit. Carriers if adopting such in close combat is stupid as it gets. You don't have a carrier try to ram or board an enemy ship or stand in the heart of an attack shooting guns dry while ships are being sunk. Nostalgic to see the Kennedy "underway" one final time. I often wonder just how many individuals served aboard a ship like that during its lifespan. And those that have memories of serving near the Kennedy for an extended period of time, which is my experience. Aboard a DDG escorting the carrier during two Med Cruises, 1975 and 1976. When I look at the Port side forward in these videos, I am looking at the spot where, on a dark night off the coast of Sicily, the USS Belknap slid under the carrier's overhang deck and had the most catastrophic fire you can imagine. We were less than a mile away, and quickly became the main firefighting ship alongside Belknap all night long. Kennedy had to anchor out in places like Naples, which the Task Group were in and out of constantly. While all us smaller ships tied up at the cruise ship dock, nearly in downtown. We went through a typhoon one year, and from our ship, safe in the harbor, we watched through the binoculars as one of Kennedy's big crew barges, or maybe even an Officer's Gig, break loose in the storm and slowly make its way onto the rocks in the north part of the port. Nothing anyone could do to save it. I somehow scammed my way aboard a couple of times to get some 'needed parts' from their well-equipped shop. Strange to realize she was only about eight years old, then. Still a showpiece, since the Nimitz was just getting close to commissioning. And once Nimitz was commissioned, I had the treat of seeing the two carriers across the pier from one another in Norfolk - and Nimitz was casting a shadow over Kennedy. Thanks for doing that livestream yesterday, it was an ideal way to see her off. Underway once more.

If we're going to reach back to old Presidents, USS Ulysses Grant would be a good one. Sure, he was Army, but his campaign against Forts Henry and Donelson are often credited as being some of the first true combined arms campaigns in US military history, and well, he won the war. As President, he created the Department of Justice and fought the KKK, which got him slandered by confederate apologists for a century despite a pretty good record as President and in his post Presidency, toured the world as an unofficial diplomat (though transported by the Navy) and resolved a war between China and Japan, and becoming the first US President to travel overseas after having been elected President. We haven't had a ship named for him since one of the old Polaris subs. Could be worth changing. But really, I'd prefer to bring back the old school carrier names. Two names I'd particularly like to come back are Ranger and Hornet. Ranger as a John Paul Jones tribute, the ship he led while commanding the only attack on UK soil during the revolution, and Hornet, because Doolittle raid.

My obscure president pick has to be the… USS Van Buren. Separate question, would an amphibious battleship ever be a possibility? As a former gator Navy sailor, I would say our ARG’s (of the 90s) had very little shore battery capacity outside of the helicopters. It seems like a fast and heavy conventionally armed battle ship (cruiser?) would compliment current ARGs. Thanks

Rename one of the newly named carriers to Intrepid and rename the other Bon Homme Richard.

have you guys ever done a Battleship Maine video (mystery of its explosion) which started war with Spain?

I want to jokingly say USS William Henry Harrison, but I feel like that’s a bad omen 😌 Taft would be an interesting one, president and chief justice…I hear Polk was also a rather effective president even though he’s seldom discussed - he deserves to be known for more than a fictional middle school! 😅

I like the fact that your requirement to name a ship using past presidents name is how funny it will be.

has there been a ship name used on all classes of ships? like destroyer, cruiser, battleship, oiler etc. maybe we can complete a flush

Wonderful... We're gonna have a new supercarrier with the nickname "Bubba" in the near future! I'm not crazy about the naming of its later sister ship, either...

The USS William Henry Harrison. Chances are good it will be in commission longer than its namesake was president. 😁

How about William H Harrison? Or warren G Harding? Coolidge, Nixon and Hoover have been suggested by other posters; names that also occurred to me!

I really wish they’d go back to naming carriers to traditional names, Yorktown, Lexington, Hornet

You just know the incoming egomaniac is going to try "ordering" that a "super, duper, mega carrier" be built and named after him.

I'm a Navy vet 73-76, in boot we were taught that carriers were named after historic naval ships, famous battles or historically important people. Very sad that it's turned into politics, while very historic names now get assigned to LHD's and such.

We need another Destroyer named USS O'BRIEN. The ww2 summer class DD-725 was in the thick of it all through the war and served throughout Vietnam.

Hmm, bad luck for naming after someone still living and Slick Willy nickname. Would the bad luck be sliding off the deck or sideways accidents or failed launch issues due to cat issues? They will have worse luck than the Willy D.

Technically...........Intrepid is the name of a constitution class cruiser in star trek. So..........being a cruiser size ship with a hopeful laser weapon would be pretty fitting

It seems that new American class Amphibious assault ships are being named after battles now so we could see a Saratoga and Lexington squeeze in there one day. Cruisers picked up the CV names but now it seems cruisers themselves are falling out of fashion. Subs get states and previous subs (glad to see Barb return). LPD's are named after state capitols or cities with New York and some politicians being the exception (Richard mcCool does have a cool sounding name so he slides). All the legacy names have left to attach themselves to are frigates. But Intrepid got stuck with an Arleigh Burke. She is also the only Arleigh Burke to not named after a person. At least Burkes are larger than Constellations.
