In a debate moderated by TIMES NOW's Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami, panelists -- Mahua Moitra, Gen Secretary& Spokesperson, TMC; Nupur Sharma, Member Natl Exceutive, Bhartiya Janta Yuva Morcha; and Jayanto Ghoshal, Editor, Ananda Bazar Patrika, Delhi -- discuss the issue of and Mamata's cops drag the BJP into the controversy.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's nephew and president of Trinamool Congress's youth wing Abhishek Banerjee was yesterday (Jan 4 2014) slapped by a youth at a rally at Chandipur in East Midnapore district, causing an outrage in the party. The youth, wearing a cap, mounted the stage from which Banerjee, an MP, was addressing the gathering and while clicking photos on his cell phone suddenly lunged towards Banerjee and slapped him, taking him off-guard. TMC workers present on the stage caught the outh and beat him up. The BJP criticised the incident of slapping of TMC youth wing president and MP Abhishek Banerjee during a public meeting in East Midnapore district and described it as a result of the party's internal feud. The condition of the youth, identified as Debasis Acharya, a resident of Tamluk, who had slapped Abhishek Banerjee, was stated to be critical after he suffered multiple head injuries. The man, who slapped MamataBanerjee's nephew and TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, was today booked for 'attempt to murder', even as police identified him as an active member of ABVP having direct connection with RSS leaders. On the other hand, the police invoked milder charges against those who lynched Debashis Acharya, who was admitted to a state-run hospital in a serious condition. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), meanwhile,denied that the youth who attacked Banerjee was a member of the organisation. What happened in East Midnapore is shameful and outright condemnable. The man who slapped Mamata Banerjee's nephew was wrong. But does he deserve to be charged with attempt to murder? And what justifies letting off the lynch mob which almost beat the attacker to death?

I equally condemn the slapping incident and the public lynching of the attacker. It is undemocratic to physically attack one's opponents in a democratic set up. The attacker should have been handed over to the police. The sycophants who assaulted him should be booked for attempt to murder (Section 307). Political violence and vandalism has become a routine work of Trinamool Congress. The party has suffered from bloody factional feuds. Under Left rule, the CPM hoodlums, used murder and rape to subdue their opponents. But in TMC, one faction is after another faction. TMC has learnt all these dastardly things from CPIM.
