This video demonstrates BART's need for a new fleet of train cars, a state-of-the-art repair facility in Hayward and a new automated train control system to boost the capacity of train traffic. All told, BART will need $16 billion over the next three decades for capital projects; finding the money is a huge part of the struggle.

So... you run a essential rail system in one of the most affluent metropolitan regions in the world but it's been neglected to the point that the system needs to be completely overhauled because you don't have reserves for capital expenditures because?... it's all going to resolving strikes and other overly generous entitlements. This past month has to be the worst in terms of outages due to track/system faults. BART is decent compared to the NY subway or London tube but really? It's 2015 and the train operators are announcing the stops (often incorrectly.) Relatively speaking...I can't help but think that the root cause is poor governance...

Even their boasts here signify sheer falsehoods. Astonishing that those trains never went through any rebuild. Nobody else ever wanted to bring about a system like that, so their scouring the world over for spare parts has me scratching my head..oh well.

You get what you pay for. Public infrastructure and public transportation seems to haven''t been renewed since the 1980ties in the US. NYC its crap, Chicago the trains are horrible run down and in San Fransico it seems to be the same story. In Europe its the other way around Copenhagen is building a new Driverless metro or rather expanding with a City ring Line, to the already existing Driverless cross City Line to the airport. London is building Crossrail, and also expanded the Overground (Commuter trains not subways). It seems Tragic comical that a Nation that put a man on thr Moon has collapsing infrastructure, because taxisation aparently is evil...

I call BART BAT Bay Area Transit because BART lost the R many years ago. it's anything but rapid. The trains are almost 47 years old. The inside of the trains smell, the floors are sticky, the speakers in some of the cars don't work or you can barely hear the train operator announce which station is coming up next and the AC in some of the cars doesn't work. Time to get rid of these antique trains and get some new ones on the tracks.

Lol a minute in I knew this was more of a "Uh yeah, we're kind of broke and no one seems to care" instead of a "look to the future". Why do we spend so little on public transit? It's a shame.

Tell this to the people in Livermore who paid taxes to BART based on the promise the system would be built to Livermore. BART adds to the growing suspicion that government projects over promise and under deliver. Time for serious reform of BART management and governance.

OMG! They interviewed my dreamgirl at 27 seconds in! I think they need to extend Bart to Fairfield, or at least the Suisun Amtrak station, out to Livermore and into Marin county. There are so many more people in the bay area, pretty soon, its going to take 3 hours to go 30 miles! Its getting there, it can already take 2! Just 10 years ago, it wasn't so crowded, we need more train service.

@nathantong2136
@nathantong2136 9 жыл бұрын
tamiasthechipmunk incorrect. do some research on other countries with successful mass transit systems. you will find that most of those systems are run as a publicly-traded and for-profit entity, usually with the government owning a significant portion of shares traded. observe Japan and Hong Kong's MTR system. They are able to create a system where public transportation is affordable, employees are paid well (never strike), and is roughly 40 years ahead of us technology wise. It is embarrassing that California, despite its high paid denizens, cannot afford to create a transit system with at least screen doors to prevent people from falling into the track. why the disparity? it's because successful foreign transit systems do not solely rely on funding from a public entity that has no cash (federal and state government have NO MONEY). they instead draw from private investors and corporations willing to put in a personal stake in improving BART in exchange for equity and a cut in profits.

+tamiasthechipmonk - That is an ignorant statement. Trump during his campaign pledged a $1 Trillion USD infrastructure initiative to rebuild America's infrastructure. Now just recently they were talking about [reducing it to] $300 Billion. At least they were talking about it though, and working it into a budget. Where I don't agree, is the Trump tax cut. It was done/ implemented poorly. The tax cut was too much, and not in the right places. So how does Trump expect to pay for all these infrastructure upgrade/ maintenance projects (such as BART) by cutting taxes? Maybe the possibility for bond issues will be greater now, because the wealthier investors will have more money to invest? I don't know. But it seems that is the best way, aside from direct taxes for such projects. There are such things as Capital Improvement Bonds or Infrastructure Maintenance/ Upgrade Bonds issued by states, municipalities, counties, or other public agencies.

When BART has the money the need to extend to Stockton.
@TysonIke
@TysonIke 3 жыл бұрын
jwbaker15 I think Bart should only expand to Livermore ACE and ACE should get tunnels through the Altamont pass with trains that can go over 100 mph because it would be the same cost, more convenient, and faster. Because Bart has a top speed of 80 mph and electric commuter trains can go over 100 MPH. ACE is more convenient as it uses standard gauge and Bart uses broad gauge. This means ace could have trains turn south to Modesto and north to Stockton at the junction in Lathrop. ACE also would still be able to go south to San Jose/Silicon Valley meaning this would benefit more commuters whereas Bart riders would have to go all the way to Bay Fair before transferring to get to San Jose/Silicon Valley, witch would take longer.

I'm the one cherry-picking? You just named many communities and declared "no problems." That's the ultimate in cherry-picking... waving away any problems as not existing. Tell the people in West Oakland that. I'm sure you've surveyed people in these communities. And notice how you mention Albany and El Cerrito but not Berkeley? That's because the ppl of Berkeley REJECTED overheard and demanded underground, and had the political pull to get what they demanded.

Dc does 900000 a day with less population now yall do closer to 200k a day Bart has serious room to expand but you need every ten minute service at least to every branch and you have got to reduce crime. Not sure how it is there but in dc I saw someone vomit on a platform tweeted wmata and in no time it was cleaned up. Wmata may be #1 for customer service. Plus not to brag but every 5 minute service on the red line

today bay fair station saw 18 trains an hour 9 per direction. farragut west has the same number of lines saw 32 an hour thats 16 per direction. people will ride when they wont have to schedule their day around riding. we have the exact same issue which is a single tube per direction carrying the brunt of our traffic but we manage. you need to be committed to the customer, you need a randy clark.

When I first moved to San Francisco those BART stations was so clean and gleaming white you could eat off them over the years and decades they have the com a run down dirty rusty mess ! Repairs are non existent. Every station had men and women bathrooms. Some have been closed since the Middle 1980s - most closed after 911. Trains to become so over crowded the last 10 years it's ridiculous - have to get about keeping them clean ( trains have been trashed ) and you got nobody to blame but BART MANAGEMENT All they give a damn about is PAY RAISES --BONUS +PENSIONS.

We’ve decried unions and abused the right of workers to organize for many years now. Here is an example in socialist California Not! where through determination and hard work they have kept a transit system running LONG past it’s optimum life. I’ve ridden Bart many times as a visitor and I’ve seen salary schedules online for the workers . They’re receiving at the most “Fair” pay and I think working miracles keeping that thing running.

First, taxpayers use the system, and they should fund it. But, I'll address your ludicrous idea that only BART employees should pay for it. They have 7 of the 16 billion they need. They need to fund another 9 billion, without using federal or state sources, who will not help. BART has, last I knew, 3,691 employees, from general managers who make ~400k a year, to mechanics who make as little as 27k per year. These figures are total compensation, including any benefits. Second, for each of those 3,691 employees to pay the needed 9 billion, *each employee would have to front a little over 2.4 million dollars (9,000,000,000 ÷ 3,691) - That just won't happen.* Source for number of employees: caltransit.org/about/50-years/member-profiles/san-francisco-bay-area-rapid-transit-district/ Source for BART employee salaries (including benefits): blog.vctr.me/bart/
