I have been around horses for 60 years. I only encountered 1 other mare that would accept an other foal. She is a special mare. I'm very happy for you.
@DoubleDogDare543 жыл бұрын
Never had to deal with it personally, but it is rare that a mare will take another foal without getting nasty. I do recall watching videos on MareStare where a mare would reject a foal or the mare died, but another mare foaled right afterwards. The owners would move the orphan into the stall with the freshly foaled mare before she even got up after foaling and after taking the necessary steps to make sure the foals smelled reasonably the same. Remarkably, the mares never questioned there being two foals. I guess the hormones of the mare were just right and the mares took both foals as her own.
@lillyess3853 жыл бұрын
@@DoubleDogDare54 With expensive racing thoroughbreds they can take experienced brood mares, who are no longer being bred, and trick them into accepting the foal as their own through hormone injections, and psychological tricks. The foal gets an experienced mom , the mare is kept around longer than she would be otherwise, and another mare is not forced into being a nursing mare. I'm not sure if they do it with other breeds of horses.

That’s so interesting to know, as I was worried when they couldn’t find the afterbirth of Star to rub on Rising Star, and then Uniek did her little prancy dance as soon as she saw RS, and I just knew all would be well. Sweet and protective momma!
@pamelamoreno46573 жыл бұрын
@@MagnoliaBelle I lost my minnie mare. She apparently got an infection in her uterine artery. The foal was 3 weeks old. We tried bottle feeding. Didnt go well. Out of the blue his sister who had a foal the summer before took him under wing. She made milk and nursed him until he was six months old. The other mare was an Arabia. So in my 60 years that is it. I think you all are amazing in your care. You do an outstanding job.
@georginaturner12373 жыл бұрын
My friend has a mare who mothers orphaned foals. She's doesn't have milk, it's not that she's lost one. She's an older mare who had a couple of foals herself when she was younger. She's just a really kind mare so she's been mum to I think 3 different orphans who were bottle fed but otherwise totally loved and looked after by Rosie from less than a week old. Quite a remarkable mare, particularly as it's not like she's lost foals and had the hormones. She apparently just loves to be mum. Never heard of another like it! I'm so happy for Uniek and rising star 🌟, the best possible outcome to a sad situation. 💘

@mdee860 horses morn and grieve as we do. A previous boss bred and raised thoroughbreds, when pregnancy was checks by vet he missed it somehow being twins. She delivered a Little early, one wasn't alive at birth and the other we knew wouldn't make it but needed to take it to try and help treat. He lived almost 24 hrs but the mams was soo upset we had to leave the deceased one in with her because she wouldn't let us take it out. It was sooo heartbreaking to watch her and to see her grieve. She knew he was deceased, she morned and in the very beginning she was nudging trying to get him up. About an hr or so and we realized that she then knew he was gone. She fooled about 2am, we had to leave him in with her until evening time that day when she let us know she accepted and knew what was going on but going in to get him was on her terms and wouldn't let anyone in until she was ready. I swear that mama had tears. I don't ever want to see something like that again, it was soo heart breaking and we lost the other in less than 24hrs as well. She was a great mama in the past and protective the first few days so as soon as it happened we knew we were going to have a tough time with her letting us take him out but like I said she let us know when she was ready, they definitely need time to grieve. Anyone that says animals don't have emotions or grieve don't know animals at all. Soo glad things worked out for these 2, she is definitely a wonderful mama and she is stunningly beautiful and soo is her Lil baby ❤️

@Stellvia Hoenheim No, they don't run entirely on instinct or impulse. While they certainly lack human grade abstract reasoning and intelligence, it is more a thing of degrees than some substantive or classive distinction. In emotional and social intelligence they rank quite highly, which is true of all the major companion species whose domestication happened in antiquity. This is not coincidence. While some schools of equitation, especially the old fashioned schools closer to the eras of martial warfare, do emphasise this idea of dominance and subjugation, it is not how it is done today, by and large. Our superior, modern understanding of how the horse works provides for a kinder model of horsemanship. One based more on mutual respect and a kind of consent than simple aggressive dominance.

There is nothing quite like a foal and those legs! Never gets old. ❤️

I cannot get over the exquisite and most breath-taking beauty that, Queen Uniek has!!! People have so much to learn from the animal kingdom and if we out aside the egos and arrogant mentality, we too would be happy and accepting of others!! Well done Mommy 😘
