Just a reminder, one of the places where the 1918 Pandemic started was likely the US. The hypothesis being that a US swine flu went with soldiers that went to UK to fight in World War I with British troops. Once the swine flu got into the trenches it spread amoung soldiers and then to civilians until it arrived in Spain. Finally, the Spanish, who were not involved in WWI, reported the deadly outbreak. Leading to decades of anti-Spanish bias. This is why scientists strongly recommend not calling a pathogen for the place/people it is initially discovered, because it might not really be from there and because I will likely result in demonization of the people associated with the virus's namesake.

A wonderful point. When the COVID-19 pandemic was becoming an increasing threat, my microbiology professor told us: "There is an official name for this virus. We should call it the COVID-19 virus or the Corona virus. You should not call it the Wuhan virus. How would you guys feel if a virus was discovered in our city, and people around the world started to call it the Ottawa virus? If people only associated the name of our city with a virus?". What she said has really stuck with me.

The fact that we know there are viruses that exist NOW that IF they ever jumped to humans...would kill around 60% of those infected....is goddamn terrifying. That scenario would make this current pandemic a fucking joke. 99% of people would literally _refuse_ to leave their home. No one......NO ONE would show up for work. Anywhere. Essential workers, no one. And who on earth would blame them? Good thing that hasn't happened yet. And there's that word again......YET. These days that word sure has an aftertaste of nauseating hindsight. Sure, we've had a pandemic...but not THE pandemic....yet. Ok yeah, we had an attempted coup....but not a _successful_ coup....yet.

I had a lady neighbor scream at me a while back when I was letting one of my snakes get some sun. She told me that I was threatening the lives of 'the entire city' because I was keeping a 'wild beast' as a pet. She accused me of infecting the neighborhood with with the 'plagues and viruses' from South Africa. The snake in question is a Boa. Boas are native to Central and South America. The snake in question was also captive bred from a breeder who lives just twenty minutes away. He's not spent a single day in the 'wild' and has routine check-ups yearly. His prey items are also domestically bred and bought from a small local business/rat breeder. Meanwhile, her five unfixed cats are free to wander the neighborhood fighting and fucking other stray cats and killing a bunch of native birds. and one of her friends has a yappy little poodle that shits all over it's front yard, shit that is never cleaned up. But yeah, sure Karen, my pet boa's definitely going to be the reason everyone's gonna catch the 'plagues and viruses'.

I seriously doubted that but I googled it and its true. It makes no damn sense. Five years ago I bought a bathouse for $125.00. Not a damn single bat has been seen within miles of it. I work 6 miles from work and last summer I had some fly around the lights eating bugs. I pray that they come visit me. Some of my neighbors also have bat boxes. We love bats. We live next to an irrigation canal for the farms and the mosquitos are terrible in the summer.

You've told me you're up there in age in another reply; Do you remember an announcement that malaria was gone from the USA in the 50s? Polio just before the 80s? For those blessed with gifts OTHER than our current seemingly high health, vaccines are literal miracles -- just because we can understand the science doesn't make it less a miracle.... ...And just because you don't trust it doesn't mean it's some evil agenda/conspiracy. @@kitcoffey7194 While I understand the sentiment, I don't think banning them altogether is the best move. The boring, and I think more effective solution (if enacted), is to dedicate more resources to animal surveillance testing in live animal markets and to enforce more serious repercussions when people break the rules. In regards to CAFOs, I think that there needs to be more support for smaller and less intensive production facilities-- both from the government and from the general public, and there are many ways to do this. All in all, banning wet markets and CAFOs nationally or internationally can cause intense food insecurities, and do more harm than good in the long run. I think the solution lies in regulation, not elimination.

@@BobCassidy You're clutching at straws here in vain pursuit of a point and it's not a pretty sight. I've already stated I buy my power from green energy companies. But that's not even the worst thing about your argument (such as it is) here. Your argument here boils down to "if there's even one thing you're doing that I could describe as environmentally inefficient, then all your attempts at doing the least ecological harm are worthless", which is utter nonsense. It's a pathetic, cowardly argument built only to make you feel better. Give your head a wobble.
@JustinMcJustin
@JustinMcJustin 3 жыл бұрын
@@BobCassidy If your argument is "you are a hypocrite because, despite your best efforts, you are incapable of protecting the environment in the society you were born into," maybe consider the people who built and perpetuated that society. This is a problem for all of us, but it certainly doesn't help that many of our forebears consistently opposed environmental interests despite decades of settled climate science. In 2021, I don't think you can say 'a generation of people that didn't know better'.
@JustinMcJustin
@JustinMcJustin 3 жыл бұрын
@@BobCassidy 'Boomer' usually applies to people born during the post-WWII baby boom, from about 1946 to 1964. Scientific consensus about climate change formed from the 1970s to the 1990s; so baby boomers came to the peak of their political power during the years when we had the best chance of preventing runaway global warming. You know, through actual systemic climate action, not petty complaints about power-hungry gaming PCs. Regarding knowing better - have you seen Soylent Green? It's a 1973 sci-fi film about the distant dystopian future of 2022, where the 'greenhouse effect' has raised global temperatures, killing crops and livestock. (Naturally, they resort to eating people.) Anyway, what were we talking about? Something about people in the past not knowing about global warming? Incidentally, lead-based paint is a great example of "scientists warned us about all of this, but we didn't do anything about it". It was only banned in the US in 1978, despite being a known hazardous substance and environmental pollutant since the 1890s. So yes, I'd say that waiting until 1978 to stop putting poison in the walls is the definition of "sitting around doing nothing for the environment".

They have huge balls of steel and deserve more credit than we give them. Just a few days ago I read about one of the Ebola outbreaks and Virologists living in safe Sweden traveled to South Africa to help hospitals and the first they had to do was transport bodies out of the hospital, people where literally dying sitting in the waiting room. Doing that when you know that at any time the virus can become airborne (again), takes a very good person.

Not only that but the US has managed to screw the rest of the world over once more by not exporting a single vaccine even though they're not using them. This is slowing down vaccinations across the globe and letting more dangerous, and potentially vaccine resistant, variants develop and of course leading to more deaths. The US completely fucked it during the height of the crisis and is now putting the rest of the world at risk, truly a country that seems hellbent on the destruction of the world, the US is probably the most evil country to have ever existed.

Here is the real crux: In the sum it cost 10x maybe 100x as much to solve these problems as a reaction than it would investing in reaserch & prevention consistently. What many people don't realize is the ONLY reason we got a Covid-19 Vaccine so fast is because 80-90% of the required research was luckily already funden & done. So it would even be an economically sensible investment that saves us money. Yet we hate to invest in 'eventualities' and thus it's just not how we think ...

Trust me, millions of ppl (myself included) wouldn't be on the internet watching nor reading about these issues if it wasn't for covid19, The issue with humans is that, its tough for us to take anything serious, unless it directly affects us.
