KLR great midsize true dual sport. Really easy to keep road and dirt worthy especially with all the aftermarket parts. I think handlebars and pegs are the first needed upgrades besides protection parts. But I own one so I might be a bit on the bias side.

Hi I’m just at the Hello Rally stage myself. I downsized from a f800gs picked up a lightly used rally and so liking this size bike. I’ve enjoyed your videos showing mods and adventures. Of course I would prefer the 300 but for a while I’ll be sitting in my 250 rally pocket, watch far to much KZbin and be dreaming about next mod, next ride, next bike….good luck with your next bike.

Thanks mate! Yeah they are a great little bike and after my last ride (video will eventually come once my household gets over covid) I’ve really found love for it again. It’s just so much fun in the right circumstances! In an ideal world I’d have two bikes and this would stay.Heck, the way petrol prices are going maybe I should keep it…

The Honda ncx, would be as capable as a strom ,and a frugal well appointed commuter

Sad to see the Rally go. Both KLR and VStrom look like good options, however, what about the Honda CB500x? To me it seems like a very capable mid-size bike with lots of options to modify etc. Cheers.

Yeah I’ll still be riding the rally for a while at this rate but want to be looking to the future and a more powerful bike. CB500x would possibly be ok, they don’t seem to have all that many vocal fans here in NZ though.

@@OnThrottle The new CB500 X with the twin discs looks like the winner, similar pricing to the Kawasaki & Suzuki . Enjoy your test rides on them all , will be interested in how you find them.

I had the same dilemma, chose the KLR and very happy, good gravel cruiser, can commute and tour. It sits right between road focus (DL) and dirt focused (DR,CRF) bikes.

I owned a 2017 (Previous generation to the current bike) VStrom 650 for a little over a year and loved it. The performance advantage over the KLR will be noticeable so that'd be my choice. The latest KLR is a cracking machine too so either way you won't go far wrong.

I'm in the exact same dilemma here in Texas. Can't decide between the klr and the Vstrom. Waiting for my last three years tax returns, the government owes me over 10 grand. They are taking their sweet time paying me. Probably wait and see what comes out for 2023 before I make that decision.

Good call. It’ll be interesting to see what comes out in the next year or two

Hey there, about 6 months ago I have switched from CRF 250 Rally to Husky 701 Enduro, but in my case I liked the weight and purpose of Rally and needed just a bit more power + good suspension + some rider aids (traction control, smart ABS). If I was planning to be spending most of my time on gravel roads + some more country trips, between those two -> Suzuki. I love the concept of KLR, but no 6th gear might be an issue during those country trips. But still... T7 would be much better than both of those. Any used ones available on your market? Cheers!

Yeah used T7s are as rare as hens teeth in NZ and like the rest of the world the asking prices are crazy. Heck, even gen1 dl650s are going for nearly $10k nzd at the moment. Not gonna lie, I love the idea of the Husky 702 LR but can in no way afford one

How many ks do you have on that thing now? I reckon after the MotoSR touch mine is a real keeper. The only other thing I'd consider doing to it is a seat, but thinking about it now I've just realised that I've stopped getting a sore ass after a couple of hours on it. Maybe the seat's breaking in? I'm just coming up to 9000 km.

I’m at 21,000 after a brilliant weekend riding in Northland on it. Honestly if I could convince the wife to let me have two bikes I reckon I would keep it. It’s as hard a task as saving money at this point in time though!
