It’s too bad that players started selling their souls to get into football. 😔 Not to mention their hearts. If I had a nickel for every fake, replaced baboon heart on the field when I watched a game, I’d have 18 nickels.

@cjs83172
@cjs83172 6 жыл бұрын
Not only should Cliff Branch be in the Hall of Fame for exactly the reasons you stated, but so should Drew Pearson, and for those very same reasons. No matter who was throwing the ball, it seemed like, the bigger the game and the more important the moment, the bigger both Branch and Pearson were. Branch was overshadowed for most of his career by the bigger personalities of many of his teammates, but he changed how defenses had to play because of his speed, and as importantly, how he used it. And of course, he caught three TDs in Super Bowls XV and XVIII, with his Super Bowl XVIII TD being the final one of his career. And as for Pearson, there was no better clutch receiver in that era than the original #88. The Clint Longley Game (Thanksgiving Day, 1974), the Hail Mary Game (1975 NFC Divisional Playoffs in MIN), and the Duel in Dixie (1980 NFC Divisional Playoffs in ATL) all saw Pearson catch the winning TD pass, each of them from a different QB. And if not for Eric Wright's fingertips, "The Catch" would nothing more than a footnote in NFL history, because Pearson would have gone all the way for the winning TD in the 1981 NFC Championship Game, as well, to send the Cowboys to their sixth Super Bowl in 12 years. Not only should both Branch and Pearson be in the Hall of Fame, but they both should have gotten in a long time ago. Sadly, it's likely that neither will ever get in, because of the poorer stats that playing in their era (the 70s and early 80s) resulted in.
@ppgshook
@ppgshook 6 жыл бұрын

The amazing thing about that was that Branch outran the Redskins defense at the age of 35, something he would show was no fluke in the Super Bowl when he beat two Redskin DBs on a 50-yard bomb, one of whom was a rookie by the name of Darrell Green, considered by many to be the fastest player in modern NFL history. and he outmaneuvered Anthony Washington twice on that drive, once on that play and the other time for the only offensive TD the Raiders scored in the first half, which also was the final TD of his career.

Swann won a SB MVP with an iconic performance. His highlights are more amazing from the acrobatic standpoint instead of being known as a speedster like Branch. As for stats, Swann only played 9 seasons. But I do agree Branch belongs in the HOF

@cjs83172 6 жыл бұрын
That's my main complaint with this particular presentation. It's too 70s-centered. Only five teams were profiled in any kind of depth, the 60s Packers and the four dynastic teams of the 70s, the Raiders, Cowboys, Dolphins, and Steelers. Even the 50s Browns only got a passing mention and the NFL's best team of the 50s, the Detroit Lions (they won three of four championship encounters with the Browns), were never mentioned, and neither were the great Halas-era Bears teams that won seven championships and had two perfect regular seasons (1934 and '42) or the late 50s Colts that won back-to-back NFL championships to end the 50s and had seven Hall of Fame players and a Hall of fame coach.

For longevity of sustained greatness, the Cowboys and Raiders are tops with two decades of playoff caliber teams, Oakland from 1967 to 1985 and Dallas from 1966 to 1985. For greatness by one group of players, the Packers (five titles in seven years) and Steelers (four in six) stand alone. For single season greatness, the 1972 Dolphins, 1985 Bears, 1984 49ers and 2000 Ravens top the list in some order. There! Is everyone happy (LOL!)?
@MGAF688

You have to include the 2001-present Patriots for longevity. NE has finished with the best record in its division every single year from 2001-17 (17 straight years). NE did not win the division title in 02 or 08 due to tie-breaker rules that awarded the 02 division to NYJ and 08 division to Mia. NE has made the playoffs in the 15x it won the division outright and in the first 14x, it has advanced to the AFC Championship Game 11x and the Super Bowl 7x and the Lombardi Trophy 5x. That is sustained greatness defined.

Patriots were the better dynasty, but the Cowboys and Raiders were much more versatile. Both teams, especially the Raiders, did it with different QBs. Raiders won world championships with two different QBs and played in world championships with 3 different ones. Cowboys had 4 QBs over their run, Although only Staubach won a Championship. The Raiders also had three 3 different coaches over their run.

While this presented some of the NFL's greatest teams up to 1980, the one problem I have with this particular production is that it was too 1970s-centered, with segments on both the Raiders and Steelers each taking two segments of the program. As a result, some of the NFL's greatest teams up to that point were completely neglected and others got only a passing mention, and only five teams (the Packers of the 60s and the Raiders, Cowboys, Dolphins, and Steelers of the 70s) were profiled. A classic case of this was all the great Chicago Bears teams under George Halas, including two that had perfect regular seasons but lost in the championship game and another that recorded the most lopsided win in NFL history, which just happened to be a championship game, 73-0 over the Sammy Baugh-led Redskins in 1940. Then while mentioning the greatness of the Rams offensive machine at the beginning of the 1950s, as well as the run of excellence by the Cleveland Browns, they completely ignored the exploits of the Detroit Lions, who likely were the "Team of the 50s", as they matched the Browns' three NFL championships in that decade, winning each of them at the Browns' expense. Then there were the Baltimore Colts at the end of the decade that won back-to-back NFL championships in 1958 and '59. That team was also completely ignored, yet that was one of the most important teams in NFL history, as they had a number of players that completely revolutionized their positions, including John Unitas, Raymond Berry, Gino Marchetti, and Lenny Moore. Even the Packers of Vince Lombardi, who won 5 NFL championships and the first two Super Bowls, didn't get enough time in this program.

Could not agree more, cjs. This was a great film but it suffered at the time from the same syndrome today that is evident at ESPN - they can only speak about the Super Bowl Era. Or, sometimes even later. So, what happened in 1966 was important in the NFL but not 1965? True NFL historians recognize that some of the greatest players and teams were found in the 40's and 50's. They do the same with the NBA, largely ignoring the Celtics of the 60s or the greatness of Wilt. It's unfortunate because baseball actually still holds onto great teams & players of the past (the 1927 or 1961 Yankees for example are still listed among the all-time greats if not the greatest teams). It's simply a lack of historical perspective (and part of that is because the pundits they have on TV are modern retired players). Though NFL Films does a better job than most.

Very good point. NFL Films continues to operate in a similar manner to this day. Shows produced in the 2010s act like the 1980s or 1990s are ancient history and that most of the great NFL plays happened (and most of the great NFL players played) between 2000-present. In 1980, the legendary franchises would have to include the 1920s Bulldogs, 1930s Packers, 1940s Bears, 1950s Lions, 1940s-1960s Browns and maybe even the 1940s Eagles and 1950s Colts.

They would use up the game with long drives that ate up the clock, then their D would force 3 and out. Boring, very few passes. The game's were over in less then 3 hours, Boring, boring but very few mistakes, very few flags, boring ! I was glad when Miami lost their top players to the new league. That was the only way they were ever going to lose. They were to dam good !!! Try to remember how efficient that team was, great, BUT BORING.

Let's see: - Two championships stained by cheating. - A smaller playoff winning percentage than Lombardi's Packers while facing easier competition in the postseason than the Packers did (and percentage overcomes all the arguments of "it's a harder road to win in the playoffs than it was in the 60's). - All but one Packers postseason opponent in the 60's won a championship with HOF'ers on the roster, and the Packers beat all but one of them. - The Pats have the Bills, Dolphins & Jets in their division (Only 3 HOF'ers who played the majority of their career in that time span on those opponents, and they only made the conference title game twice in that time span). - Lombardi's Packers had a schedule where the majority of their games were against Hall of Fame-laden teams in their division like the Colts, Bears, Rams & Lions which won a combined five NFL titles and had a combined 24 Hall of Famers, in a time when it was harder just to get to the playoffs. - Still, Lombardi won his 5 in 7 years - greatest percentage of championships by any dynasty ever. Advantage Packers.

I would love to see the 1960's Green Bay Packers vs the 1970's Pittsburgh Steelers play against each other in their absolute prime. What a game that would've been. I'd root for the Green Bay Packers because I'm a huge fan of the 1960's Green Bay Packers coached by Vincent T. Lombardi. You certainly can make the argument that winning five Championships & the first two Super Bowls make the Green Bay Packers the Best NFL Team ever but I cannot argue against the Pittsburgh Steelers being considered the Best NFL Team ever as per this film because winning four Super Bowls in six years is extraordinary.

That play at 5:38 seems like it really should be challenged, no?

The ball carrier used to not be “down” unless their momentum was stopped and they were stopped from continuing their run

The 60's Packers were NOT the first NFL team to win 3 straight championships. They did it before from 1929-1931.

They don't respect the accomplishments of Curly Lambeau. They didn't then, and they don't now. Why? Who knows.

They don't recognize football in the 1920s and 1930s and 1940s because over 30 teams don't exist no more from that time and football was a joke then

The refs used to ignore tackles if the ball carrier was close to scoring! Look at 4:00 and 5:32 for proof. In the second one, the ref seems really excited about the TD. LOL
