Imagine not having a single kicker or punter on your roster. Well, during week 2 of the 1979 NFL season, when the New Orleans Saints played the Green Bay Packers, that's exactly what happened, as due to an injury from Russell Erxleben, they had to play all 60 minutes of the contest without having anyone on their team who could kick or punt the football. As for how that turned out... well, it was about as big of a disaster as you would expect

The 79 saints finished 8-8. Why am I mentioning this? Because this was the first time in team history, New orleans didn't have a losing season

This edition of the Saints were the ones that should've made the playoffs, finishing either 9-7 or 10-6. In 1980, the team seemed to lose heart and mail in the season, beginning 0-14.

The Saints, from no kicker, to the kicker with only half a foot, and a QB, whos also a TE, WR, and RB, they never disappoint down there in the south, they always have their own flavor so to speak.

When you draft a punter/kicker No. 11 overall over All-Pro caliber talent and he gets hurt, you can't exactly be surprised when that play backfires. Talk about a dumb decision!

Even if he was like Alex Henery in college and went to the hall of fame just the fact that you’re not worried about other teams getting hundreds of other player is crazy. Draft a guard or DB at very least.

Erxlaben was an All-American kicker and punter. He was projected to be a star in the NFL. Those guys were rare back then, and teams held onto their kickers. Today, with so many excellent kickers, teams are a lot more finicky and quick to cut a guy. A first-rounder? Perhaps not. But if the Saints didn't pick him, someone else would have very soon after that. Ironically, straight-on kickers were not going to be around much longer since soccer-style kickers were more accurate and longer. Erx was one of the last big-time straight-on kickers. (Mark Mosely might have been the last prominent straight-on kicker.)

People like to rag on Special Teams but this and the 2010 Chargers (who coincidentally, also missed the playoffs by 1 game) prove it’s important to at least have an average one.

The real problem is that Erxleben just wasn't very good anyway. He and Tony Franklin at A&M were both lighting it up as college kickers in the 1970s SWC, and both went to the pros, but Franklin was the only one who made it. The Eagles took him in the third round of the same draft that Erxleben was the 11th overall pick, and he had a 10-year pro career and went to a couple of Super Bowls. Erxleben, in addition to being injury-prone, seemingly couldn't adjust to the NFL hashmarks and wasn't accurate as a kicker. After he left football, he had a second career as a con man. He wasn't any better at that and went to the slammer twice. But it's not necessarily true that you shouldn't use a high draft pick on a specialist. The Raiders never regretted taking Ray Guy in the first round.

From the season-opening game, it appears that Russell Erxleben was as good a passer as the kicker the Saints signed later on in the season.

So this is the game that effectively led the Rams here to Tampa for the NFCCG? I didn't realize how close the Saints came to possibly changing NFL history.

They went 8-8 in 1979 then went 1-15 in 1980. One of their 15 losses was the famous game where they led the 49ers 35-7 at the half and ended up losing 38-35 in OT thanks to Joe Montana. They also came within 1 point of going winless.

This reminds me of the Bengals Steelers game that was played in Week 1 a few years ago the Bengals lost that game because their long snapper got hurt which killed them with kicking field goals which cost them the game against the Steelers because the timing from the snap to the kick was off just by a little bit and it threw everything out of wack which caused their kicker to miss pretty easy FGs for a pro kicker. So yeah Long snapper on top of a kicker and punter is very important as well.

I think the only reason this isn't a "Dumb Decisions" segment is because it was made by the front office and not by a coach on game day.

This is a ridiculous misrepresentation of the facts, Galbreath hit two chip shots early so the field goal attempt at the end of the half made perfect sense. Keep in mind the kick would have made it a three score game (15 points) by the 1979 rules. He also hit an extra point later, so it's not like he just sucked. I'm sure the "hidden yards" of field position didn't help, but neither did Peyton's pappa throwing 2 picks. As for the Saints out-gaining the Pack, yes they won the total yardage battle (presumably because of the short fields), but the Pack went through them like a hot knife through cheddar gaining 6.8 yards per play (a yard more than NO and 2 more than league average). Nothing in the actual results convinces me that if Green Bay had faced worse starting field position they would have lost

I can picture an NFL team in the next decade going without a kicker or punter or both. It would have to be a fast, high scoring offense, maybe like Mahomes Chiefs. They just go for 2 every time or go for it on 4th Down no matter where. It will be a young HC who will live or die by the decision, maybe aided by analytics of no kicker.
@RichV20

Most Madden players or Madden franchise players already go for it all the time on 4th. It will be some coach who grew up gaming Madden who makes his way up the ranks. You might see it in high school or college first. Some high schools have bad/no kickers and already do this and only punt(badly).

IIRC, at the time Erxleben held the record for longest field goal in NCAA history. He also did some time in the pen for securities fraud long after his NFL career ended.

While missing the playoffs themselves, the Saints win against the Redskins at RFK cost the Redskins a playoff spot. They wouldn't have needed to win at Dallas week 16.

@chrisuncleahmad Blowing 4th qtr leads was a big issue for that team. Lost a 14 pt lead against Houston, 13 pt lead against Dallas, 21 pt lead against Detroit but won on a Moseley fg at the end, and a 20 pt lead against St Louis but came back to win again on a late Moseley fg.

This Saints team was coming off of being the first team to lose to the Bucs. They were motivated. Archie Manning had his best season as a pro. They also had Chuck Muncie, Wes Chandler, and Henry Childs. Conrad Dobler was also on this team. They had talent. The next season, not so much.

BTW, while you couldn't go for two at the time. Running a play from scrimmage at the 2-yard line WAS worth 1 point, so they didn't actually NEED to attempt to kick extra points. The real question is how bad were the kickoffs?
