Having just read the ending of the book, you talking about Elwood trying to stay out of trouble, being an avid reader and planning on enrolling early at a college made me cry.

Try WE CARRY THEIR BONES by Erin Kimmerle. I was at these schools- they made me fight and also tortured me about every few months.

i had this book for a summer reading project and honestly i’m so glad i did, I JUST FINISHED IT RIGHT NOW!! this book was filled with so much detail and emotion and Colson Whitehead puts so much incredible language within each chapter, it was an amazing read and the end tied it up beautifully. 10/10!!

Wonderful review and how amazing you were able to talk about this book with the author. I do agree that it’s important for us to read these stories, no matter how heavy, because those stories need to be told. Yes to how horrific that digging up graves becomes a games. Definitely going to read this book. Thank you.

Thank you!! And yes it was such an amazing experience - so thankful I got to talk to him! Totally, it's so important, to add to that, it's also very important that we take care of ourselves as well - having the black experience and reading about it as well can be really tough. What works for me is switching between light and heavy books :)

The Artisan Geek Definitely! After reading The Book of Night Women, and knowing that the horrific abuse those enslaved women and men suffered,, I read Beverly Jenkins historical romance for months. I just needed to experience us holding and loving on each other. It’s empowering because she also uses real stories to create her books. Yes to self love ❤️

That ending had me doing a double take. I couldn't believe it. Such a powerful but painful book. I respect the elwood character in all his decision making. He wanted to be a good man and inspired people to be better. Great review. I like how this was also a quick read due to how fast the story progressed.

So basically he had to hitchhike to the community college that he began to attend at the beginning of the book, and he gets in a car with a man who had stolen the car. Elwood was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and because he was black, he had no chance

Did Turner give Elwood's letter to the inspectors or did he really give it to Spencer? The ending just says that Turner betrayed Elwood. Does that mean he betrayed him by giving the letter to Spencer or does it mean he betrayed him by giving the letter to the inspectors knowing that he'd get into trouble rather than get rid of it altogether? I've looked for a definite answer from the author but haven't been able to find one. I've read comments where people believe both outcomes. Any clarification?
