In essence, contemporaries are peers or equals existing or occurring in the same period of time Yes, the skull and crossbones symbol on an old gravestone does have significant meaning. It is a symbol consisting of a human skull and two long bones crossed together under or behind the skull. The design originated in the Late Middle Ages as a symbol of death and especially as a memento mori on tombstones. “Memento mori” is a Latin phrase that translates to “remember you must die”, serving as a reminder of our own mortality and the inevitability of death. The skull and crossbones are probably the oldest mortality symbols found on Scottish graveyards. Often an hourglass is combined with the skull and crossbones to signify time running out, or a winged death’s head also indicating that life is fleeting.

I just wanted to thank you for going to this graveyard in Dumfries Scotland. It just so happens that some of my ancestors are buried there, you did show two of them.. a William Grierson and Robert Burns. I also have ancestors at Ruthwell Churchyard (Graveyard), Dumfries/Annan. I have been a fan and subscriber of yours for awhile and to see St. Michael's in Dumfries come up just blew my mind, so thank you. I hope to see it for myself one day, it is beautiful.

This is an excellent channel this is. Definition of contemporary "living or occurring at the same period of time." So those people lived at the same period of time a Burns and may have or may have not known him.

What a wonderfully atmospheric cemetery. I realise everyone is supposed to worship Robert Burns and therefore the cemetery has to revolve around him, but I think it a very great pity that some graves have those garish vivid blue plaques added. It diminishes their lives, turning them into mere contemporaries of RB when they are so much more than that. The plaques spoil the appearance of the graves and highlight RB instead of the person who is buried there. If you don’t think so, don’t hang me for having a different opinion. 18:00

Hey there, a great day for a walk!! Not 2 B insulting or anything but why do so many stone structures in UK have either black mold, mosses or green lichens covering them? Don’t you guys use pressure washers & cleaning compounds to refresh public buildings, Churches, Stone walls, etc.. seems like you just want to keep everything old, ancient, crumbly & dirty looking. Maybe to keep from possibly damaging them I don’t know but I’ve been cleaning my great grandparents stones with mild soap, hard plastic scraper, a brass brush & portable sprayer that keeps them clean, mold & lichen free & doesn’t damage the stone. By the way, your Churches are magnificent. Always envied your history.
@helencheadle5285
@helencheadle5285 Жыл бұрын
You may have to get permission to do so from living descendants….can be a bit involved tracking them down…all depends on the church rules, as I imagine if “any” damage was done by use of abrasive liquids or brushes, then the church may be legally viable….I don’t know, but lately down south where stones have been leaning, they have removed them to one side after trying to locate family to do something about it. The church fears the stones falling on a child or someone, and being taken to court. It’s all got very silly in Gt Britain to my mind…lawyers are making a pile! They take chestnut trees that have been standing 100’s years down, which line the roads school children walk alongside, “just in case a child gets injured by falling conkers!! Absolutely b….y ridiculous! When I was a child we would climb these lovely trees to shake the branches for the conkers to fall! Great fun threading onto string for conker matches…but I have no doubt even that very old, pleasurably past time is disallowed these days….when I think of how long these trees have stood quietly growing, how many generations have enjoyed the conkers…and now it’s a crazy place to live…no hopscotch even, in case a child falls!I had a fantastic childhood…great fun, going out to play until dusk with friends,,it’s so sad that times have changed so much..freedom curtailed. My generation were the lucky ones! Thankyou Dan….that was fascinating! Hope your leg recovers soon! Best wishes! 🙋‍♀️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
