The Night Game (pt1): Why Fly Fish At Night? And Some Tips To Make It A Bit Easier/ Tim On The Fly

In the summer, nighttime means cooler temperatures, more (and often bigger) active feeding fish, and a level of forgiveness in your presentation. However, it's also dark and you can't see what you're doing, so here's a few tips for how you can get yourself prepared and make night fly fishing both safer and less intimidating. In part 2, we'll talk a little about gear and some basic techniques, and part 3 will see us put it all together and catch some fish. So be sure and stay tuned to Tim On The Fly!

Any luck night fishing in the spring and fall?

Yes, especially in the Spring for walleyes. They tend to be night feeders most the time anyway. About the time the water temps hit the mid 40's they move upstream (or onto shallow flats in lakes) to spawn. When the water hits about 50 degrees the crawfish come out and the walleyes will stay shallow to feed on them post spawn. This is also about the time crappie and white bass will also start moving in, as do shad and other baitfish.

@@timonthefly3167 How about in the fall. Im in northern Nevada and we have a few reservoirs and urban ponds that hold bass. How likely am I to get them to take a fly in october/november at night?

Early Fall, sure, especially as warm as this Fall has been. By November, though, the bass are probably going to be sluggish at best, and that will be in the warmest part of the day. I'm not sure how far or how quickly water temps drop where you are, but typically for me the night fishing is done when the overnight lows start dropping into the 40's consistently. Hope that helps.
