Well color me amazed! I can't believe all these years, staring up with my naked eyes at Orion, in wonder, and the Pleiades, I had no idea Taurus was in between. And now that I've bought a set of 25x70 binoculars, this video is tremendously helpful! I can't wait to go searching for the cluster and Theta 1 & Theta 2!

Astronomy and mythology in one. I can't stop watching episode after episode. a thousand thumbs up! hoping for more videos =) ps: its hard to stargaze here in the Philippines, its always cloudy at night and we have a longer period of rain than summer. and sometimes even if its summer, it's still cloudy. But just the same, I'm getting myself a binocular and try to look up with AWE AND WONDER!

Brusa, thanks for the great feedback, it's much appreciated. And don't give up! Get those binoculars and take advantage of those few and far between clear nights, you won't regret it. And be patient, it takes time to learn the sky, but once you do, you just might find yourself becoming an amateur astronomer. Or, who know, maybe even a professional one. Best of luck- Darrell Heath

Thank you Darrell, I love your lesions in astronomy, wish I had you as a professor, but these as almost as good. One more characteristic when choosing binoculars is the eye relief. This is important for people that wear glasses, and don't want to take them off to use the binoculars. I have found that 20 mm ER allows me to leave my glasses on when using the binoculars. Unfortunately this (generally speaking) increases the price for a given series of binoculars. you also dont need to spend a fortune. Most of the added cost of $1,000+ binoculars is due to water proof and durability construction, rather than optical quality per se. This is usually more important to hunters and boaters, than to astronomers. $200 will get you a really nice pair to get started. also know that the weight of the binoculars increases quickly with the objective diameter, so keep that in mind if you are carrying them around your neck- an extra pound of weight its very noticeable after a few hours hiking.

I just got a 12x70 yesterday and im excited to try it and view the pleiades. However at this time of the year that portion of the sky is blocked by buildings and lots of light pollution. I might just have to wait until winter when these are higher up in the sky at night. I got to see jupiter and its galilean moons last night and it was great for first light.

Hi. Im gathering information about my first binoculars overall for stargazing. I thought i have read enough to put my gold on Trailseekers 8x42 ED but what occurred now while listening you is that Trailseekers have Schmidt Pechan Roof Prisms (not porro prism as you advise) and ALL other whistles exept IS. So my question is that how bad are they? What is the essence between folding light 4 or 3 times?? Trailseekers exit pupil is 5.25mm and pretty much in the top with that. What is the essence? Thank You!
@darrellheath9776
@darrellheath9776 4 жыл бұрын
The ED feature is a special kind of glass that adds better contrast and helps reduce color fringing around bright objects and while the ED glass delivers visibly brighter, sharper images, it's perhaps better used for daytime activities such as birdwatching. My advice, if you are interested in doing both daytime and astronomical observing, is to stick with a quality porro prism pair of binoculars such as a 7x50 or 10x50 pair, which would be an ideal weight for holding steady and carrying around and should offer enough aperture to see things like bright galaxies and nebulae.
@johnwriterpoet1783
@johnwriterpoet1783 4 жыл бұрын
ED glass brings the price up considerably. Better to put that money into more aperture.

The function of the prism is to make the picture upside-up again. There are also very old bins with a negative secondary lens that don't need that but they have a really small field of view.

@fusion-music
@fusion-music 5 жыл бұрын
If you can hold it, yes, it is better. Its better because of the aperature being 70mm. But you really need a tripod for it & maybe even the 10 x 50mm. Tripods make for better experience. Same tripod as for Camera.

Hi Darrel. Thank you for your insightful lectures. You have actually saved me from buying a telescope until I do some more reading, a bit of research and experimentation with my simple pair of binoculars. Just one question, the binoculars I own have "12x40 139m/100m 7.5" written on them. Does it mean it can show the objects 7.5 times bigger? And, what are my 'options' in terms of looking for celestial objects in an urban area with tremendous amount of artificial light in the night sky? Meaning, which objects can be easily seen with this pair of binoculars? By the way, I am a new, would be amateur star gazer who is about to take a start and knows absolutely nothing about stars/planets etc.
@TimHarrell
@TimHarrell 3 жыл бұрын
12x - magnification. 7.5 is the field of view in degrees (angular). The middle figure should probably be 139/1000 (not 100), which tells you what field of view you have at 1000m. Your binoculars are good for broad sweeps of the sky as the FOV is large. Heavy light pollution means you will find it very hard to see nebulae. If you can’t access dark skies then there’s no point in spending too many $$$ on binocs or scopes.

That’s generally an excellent video. It’s possible you are doing your viewers a disservice by not recommending roof prism binoculars. 40+ years ago, the only quality roof prism binos were very, very expensive. And, yes, those were superb for astronomy. And still are. Now there are hundreds of quality roof-prism binoculars on the market. They have greatly displaced porro prism models. Spending US$150 and up almost guarantees a roof prism binocular will be excellent quality and will last most of a lifetime with careful use. Roof prism binoculars are possibly more rugged, often waterproof, are more compact, and (too many people) a sleeker and more appealing industrial design. It is my opinion that an expensive porro prism binocular is (still) superb for astronomy. At the moderate end of the price scale, I suspect a purchaser would be more likely to be satisfied with a roof prism model. The very inexpensive porro prism examples are, to be blunt, often junk. Again: good work. And thanks. From the comments I see that you have inspired many people.
